Peugeot Motocycles: "we will be profitable from 2007"
After the abandonment of the Scoot’Elec, the Marketing and Communication Director of Peugeot Motocycles takes stock of the future of this 100% subsidiary of the automotive group.
After the abandonment of the Scoot’Elec, the Marketing and Communication Director of Peugeot Motocycles takes stock of the future of this 100% subsidiary of the automotive group.
Moto-Net: Peugeot Motocycles has experienced financial difficulties in recent years, to such an extent that we feared the worst. What is the future of this subsidiary within the PSA group today? ?
Christophe Chaptal, Marketing and Communication Director: I would like to categorically deny this judgment, I assure you that PSA places its trust in us! We are the European n ° 2 for 50 cc scooters and we have gone from 16.5% market share in 2003 to 21% in 2004, i.e. a gain of 4.5 points in a market down 8.3% ! In France, thanks to the Ludix, in 2004 we became n ° 1 for 50 cc scooters, ahead of our historical competitor, going from 25.3% market share in 2003 to 37.1% market share in 2004.
Moto-Net: However the Jet Force does not really take off and the Elyseo and Elystar are still far from Piaggio. What are your projects ?
CC : On the market for scooters over 50 cc in Europe, we went from 3.3% market share in 2003 to 2.4% market share in 2004, a loss of 0.9 points. The reasons are known: it is the lack of a range that meets the core demand. In France, if we add up sales of the Elyseo 125cc and the Elystar 125cc (which are one and the same family), we achieved a penetration of 4.3% in 2004 compared to 3.5% in 2003. This penetration 2004 places us in sixth place in sales. We were heavily in deficit in 2003 with a loss of 24.4 million euros for a turnover of 271.4 million euros and today, the company is still in deficit. But we will stabilize in 2005 and we will become profitable again from 2007, thanks to a range of large scooters that we will present this year at the Paris Motor Show..
Moto-Net: Including a 650 cc ?
I cannot tell you yet what will be the proposed displacements … But know that we will be in the heart of the European range of 125 cc and more! Because Peugeot Motocycles, with the help of PSA, has made the biggest investment in its history to present two distinct ranges of scooters of 125 cc and more.
Moto-Net: Your production is done in France, while the majority of your competitors are outsourced. Motorcycle activity is not also a social issue for PSA ?
CC : We do not want to relocate. On the contrary, we want to continue producing in France, where, as you know, labor is more expensive than in some other countries. But the extremely significant investments that have been made since 2001 to renovate our industrial facilities clearly demonstrate, if needed, our desire to perpetuate the company..
Moto-Net: We have been talking for two years about a 600 cc scooter powered by the Honda SilverWing. Where is this project at? What are your relations with Honda today? ?
CC : CC : We signed an agreement with Honda in the 1980s, which justified Honda’s acquisition of a stake in Peugeot Motocycles. Today, the 25% held by Honda has been fully taken over by PSA, which makes Peugeot Motocycles a 100% subsidiary of the automotive group..
Moto-Net: With the Scoot’Elec, you offered one of the only non-polluting two-wheelers. Why did you abandon it? What were his business results ?
Since 1996, we have sold 3,600 copies of the Scoot’Elec. Its abandonment is due to two factors: on the one hand the shortage of parts, because our suppliers no longer manufacture them. And on the other hand the difficulties linked to the lack of infrastructure, because it is still very complicated today to be able to charge an electric vehicle….
