According to the study that 2-Roues Lab ‘has just carried out with L’Officiel du cycle, de la moto et du quad, the prize for the most stolen two-wheeler goes again and again to the maxi scooter Yamaha Tmax, which is ahead of the Triumph 675 Street Triple and the Triumph 1050 Speed Triple.

We knew that motorcycles and scooters (about 4 million vehicles in France) were particularly affected by this scourge (read in particular), but this survey carried out among 1,671 motorcyclists reveals that "17.8% of them suffered at least a theft of two-wheelers ". And in 94.4% of cases, the driver of the two-wheeler "has the right attitude and denounces the theft".

1.3 flights on average

The Mutuelle des Motards laboratory dedicated to research on motorized two-wheelers (read our) further specifies that on average, "theft victims suffered 1.3".

The list of the most stolen motorcycles and scooters in France reminds us of some obvious facts: the best-selling brands on the market are also the most stolen, and the regions in which we find the most motorcycles and scooters are also the most affected..

Nearly one in two flights in the Paris region

Unsurprisingly, Paris won first place on the podium for the cities where the most thefts occur ("14.2% of the 395 flights studied"), not to mention the suburbs with "27.3% of thefts on the whole of the Ile-de-France region (excluding Paris) ". The Paris region alone thus totals the sad score of 41.5% of motorcycle and scooter thefts in France….

Survey methodology

Survey carried out by email among 1,671 2-wheel Lab ‘panelists distributed nationally, who own a total of 2,605 two-wheelers.

  • 298 respondents suffered at least one theft
  • Only the three most recent flights are studied, i.e. 395 flights
  • 76.6% of respondents live with a partner
  • 51.3% with children
  • 32.9% are managers and 31.8% employees
  • Respondents are on average 43 years old (9% are under 26, 45% are between 26 and 45 and 46% are over 45)
  • 5.5% are women
  • 75% live in urban areas
  • 93% own at least one motorcycle
  • 7% own at least one scooter

Next come the departments of Rhône (6.8% of flights), Bouches-du-Rhône (3.5%) and Var (3%).

Overall, 89.6% of motorcycle and scooter thefts take place in urban areas. In 49.1% of cases the two-wheeler was parked on the public road. Theft from a garage or collective box represents 27.6% of thefts and collective parking 22%.

Finally, only 5 thefts out of the 395 recorded by respondents (1.3%) resulted from bike jacking..

At home, most of the bikers questioned declared that they park their two-wheelers in a garage or private box (89.3%) against only 8% in a collective car park and less than 3% on public roads..

Top 10 most stolen motorcycles and scooters

The top 10 most stolen motorcycles and scooters in France also shows three 125s including two scooters and a motorcycle (Yamaha Majesty 4th, Xmax 5th and YZF-R 10th), a three-wheeler (Piaggio 400 MP3 LT, 8th) and two maxi-scooters (Yamaha Tmax in the lead and Suzuki 650 Burgman 7th).

The rest is made up of large-displacement motorcycles with two Triumphs in the second and third places (675 Street Triple and 1050 Speed Triple, the 675 still lacking a coded key in 2012 …), while the Kawasaki Z1000 is the 6th most stolen motorcycle in France ahead of the Yamaha R1 9th.

Few electronic alarms, even less geolocation

"In 39.5% of thefts, the two-wheeler is not found", further indicates the 2-Roues Lab ‘investigation, "and when it is it is damaged in 85.3% of cases but we do not know the level of degradation (scratches, breakage, disassembly, destruction of accessories …) ".

Dismantling of a network in Val-de-Marne

Investigators from the territorial security of Val-de-Marne (ST 94) have just put an end to the actions of an international network of thieves of large-displacement two-wheelers.

After having arrested on January 26, 2012 a 20-year-old who is transporting in his truck a dismantled motorcycle reported stolen, the anti-crime brigade of Champigny-sur-Marne (94) transmits the case to ST 94 which identifies five other men participating in numerous thefts and concessions of motorcycles in Val-de-Marne and Seine-et-Marne.

"The traffickers always use the same modus operandi", tells the prefecture of police: "they convey on board cars, bound for Tunisia and Morocco, the spare parts wrapped in plastic film. Nearly fifteen trips have thus carried out between January and June ".

On June 15, the police arrested the network organizer in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges (94) while he was transporting two stolen motorcycles in his vehicle "packaged for export". They arrested his four accomplices the next day and seized a total of 14 large-capacity motorcycles and scooters, 21 bicycles and a "back-up" car….

In terms of protection against theft, most of the bikers questioned (78.7%) declared that they used "at least" a mechanical anti-theft device (U, chain, disc lock, etc.), 55.9% the original anti-theft device ( Neiman or coded key), 21.5% engraving, 4.8% an electronic anti-theft device (alarm) and only 0.3% a Tracker Rider type geolocation tool (which now equips the new Tmax 530 as standard).

Of the 2,605 motorcycles and scooters studied by 2-Roues Lab ‘, "75.7% were purchased without taking into account the insurance premium against theft, or the fact that the vehicle was more or less stolen, or the fact that an anti-theft system is integrated ", analyzes the Mutuelle des Motards:" what is certain is that a driver of two-wheelers does not choose his vehicle according to the risk of theft ".

Finally in the event of theft, "whatever the situation, it must be declared to the gendarmerie or to the police station closest to the place of the theft", advises the insurer, because "this makes it possible not to be held responsible in traffic violation. Then, however restrictive it may be, the filing of a complaint must be systematic, with the possibility of reimbursement or not, so that everyone can realize the importance of this offense and ‘agree on official figures ".
