Yesterday, during the first stage of the Dakar 2012 won by Francisco Lopez, amateur rider Jorge Boero died after a heavy fall. Barely started, the biggest rally-raid in the world – 8,373 km to be covered between Mar del Plata (Argentina) and Lima (Peru), including 4,406 km of special for motorcycles – is unfortunately already in mourning….
Originally from Buenos Aires (Argentina), Jorge Boero crashed at kilometer 55 of the unique 60 km special organized on this first day. 38-year-old father of a two-year-old girl, the Argentinian took part in his second Dakar with a Beta hit with the number 175.
"Bikers pay the heaviest price in the rally "(David Castera)
"It’s a great sadness obviously," said David Castera, the event’s sporting director. "The Dakar is intended to be a celebration, a great adventure, a discovery with risks. The bikers know it. They are the ones who pay the heaviest price of the rally".
"It always pisses off when we all leave home to have an adventure and one of us does not return home. There are no words", slips the French Cyril Despres, one of the greats favorites – with the Spaniard Marc Coma – of this 34th edition only contested with 450 cc motorcycles.
Falling in the middle of a straight line, in a part apparently without apparent danger, Jorge Boero died during his transfer to the hospital by helicopter. The origin of his fall remains to be determined.
"There was a lot of wind at the seaside and the bike moved a lot in the jumps," Despres analyzes. "The zone was quite fast with a little dust. Nothing more", laments the Frenchman who is very affected by this tragedy..
The entire Site team shares in the grief of Jorge Boero’s family and those close to him.
Chaleco challenges Coma and Desprès !
While he recently admitted that Marc Coma and Cyril Desprès were evolving in another category with their official KTMs, Francisco "Chaleco" Lopez however left only crumbs to his opponents during the first stage which linked Mar del Plata to Santa Rosa (Argentina) via 60 km of special and 796 km of liaison !
Winner of his sixth stage in the Dakar, the Chilean gave a fairly concrete overview of his ambitions by finishing ahead of the defending champion Marc Coma and the surprising Javier Pizzolito.
Of course, the 450 cc KTM are probably the most complete bikes on the grid, and its official riders are among the fastest, but "Chaleco" and its swift Aprilia intend to make it difficult for them as often as possible. !
At the foot of the podium, Quinn Cody and Jakub Prygonsky complete a fairly new top 5 with 30 and 49 seconds behind the winner of the day.
Despite a wasp sting in the middle of the special, David Casteu (Yamaha) finished ninth, and Olivier Pain twelfth, while Cyril Despres only appeared in 13th place.
The start of the 403 km link for the second motorcycle leg was given this morning at five a.m. local time (1 a.m. Paris time), while the 290 km special started at 10:30 a.m. local time. Arrival is set at San Rafael (Argentina). Stay connected !
