Dakar - Dakar moto 2017 - stage 12 - Finish: historic victory for Sam Sunderland (KTM) -

Sam Sunderland won his first Dakar motorcycle at the age of 27, continuing the victorious saga started by the official KTM team in 2001. The n ° 14 touched the goal after two withdrawals during his previous participations (2012 and 2014) and became the first Briton to clinch victory in the Dakar since its launch in 1979, all categories combined.

Sam Sunderland succeeds the Australian Toby Price on Saturday after having rallied the twelfth and last stage in sixth place, to 1’42 from Adrien Van Beveren (Yamaha) who offers his first stage victory with a perfect tie on time with Gerard Farres Guel (KTM). The two rivals battled each other throughout this short 64 km timed final, preceding a long link of over 700 km to the podium ceremony in Buenos Aires..

The three-time enduro winner from Le Touquet won for the honor, after having digested the disappointment that had arisen the night before when he learned that the race director was giving him a one-minute penalty for speeding in the race. With this penalty, the Frenchman practically lost all hope of defending his third place in the general standings against Farres, on whom he had recovered before the award of his penalty …

In the end, the n ° 6 finished in fourth place at 36’28 overall, the most infuriating top position… His performance for his second Dakar only remains nonetheless exceptional, especially when compared to the results of others. Yamaha riders: his experienced teammate Helder Rodrigues, transparent throughout this 39th edition, finished at over two hours …

Starting off very well the first days, with the fastest time in Stage 1 before being downgraded, Xavier de Soultrait, for his part, fell off sharply in the final stages. The French viscount’s dive was precipitated during the course error and during the, where he broke the engine of his Yamaha the day before the final. He finished a disappointing 87th overall … We console ourselves – a little – with the beautiful 7th final position of Pierre-Alexandre Pela Renet (Husqvarna).

Honda is getting closer to KTM but must improve its management

In the end, Sunderland won it quite logically following their lead of half an hour on the evening of the penultimate stage. The KTM official took the lead of the rally after his victory on the fifth stage – the only one he will win -, taking advantage of the retirement of his leader Toby Price (fractured femur in stage 4 ) to don the boss costume.

A time threatened by Quintanilla (Husqvarna), Sunderland has definitely taken some air in the general after retiring from the Chilean, victim of a faintness after a crash during the grueling. A stage that left its mark on the body of the bikers, many of whom lost a lot on this day marked by navigation errors.

Originally from the port city of Poole, in the south of England, Sunderland above is ahead of his Austrian teammate Matthias Walkner (+ 32’38) and Spaniard Gerard Farres Guell (+ 35’40). That is to say three KTMs in the first three places in the ranking of this 16th consecutive edition won by the Orange brand! Note, however, that the Spanish Farres Guel completes this 100% Katoche podium with a private motorcycle, so a step below the factory ones of Sunderland and Walkner.

Elsewhere, KTM has seen the competition respond in threatening fashion, including Honda, who clinched five stage wins (three for Barreda, one for Brabec and one for Goncalves). Despite Ricky Brabec’s frustrating heist at the end of the the CRF450 Rally seems practically on par with its Austrian rival, and its drivers have the speed to compete with KTM.

But it is still at the level of the strategy that Honda has sinned: Joan Barreda was still too fiery at times, missing a ford from the first day before suffering penalties for speeding always angry at this. level. But it was above all the blunder made in stage 4 that sullied all the hopes of the HRC riders: by refueling its four riders outside an authorized zone, Honda made an error punishable by one hour penalty.

With such a ball to drag, mass was said from the fourth day for the HRC, despite all the efforts made by Joan Barreda (5th overall) and the great performances signed by his French water carrier, Michael Metge, often in the first to finish (14th overall).

Serial cancellations

Finally, a word about the extremely difficult weather conditions encountered during this Dakar 2017, with heavy rains causing many abandonments (97 bikers at the finish out of 144 at the start) and many upheavals on the course. We especially remember the cancellation of stage 9 due to the gigantic landslide which unfortunately cost the lives of two inhabitants of the small village of Volcan…

In short, a difficult, grueling edition, with large pieces of navigation as announced by its sporting director, the former winner Marc Coma. You have to see the result of the hidden way-points to unlock to continue the track inaugurated this year as well as the GPS voluntarily restricted in their information. Let us end this assessment with the victory in the car of the phenomenal Stephane Perterhansel, who takes his seventh victory on 4-wheels after his six victories on a motorcycle. well done, !

The declarations of the Dakar moto 2017:

Sam Sunderland – KTM (winner): "Unbelievable. When I crossed the line, I felt the emotion come over me. To have the weight of the race on your shoulders for more than a week is something very heavy. It’s the first Dakar that I finished, and I finished it in first position, it’s a crazy feeling, I have no words ”.

Matthias Walkner – KTM (2nd overall) : "It’s really cool, after what happened last year because I had a big injury. It took me all season to get back on the bike and believe in my chances. get on the podium. This morning, I knew there was a lot at stake. I was a little tense, but once in the special, it became super pleasant. I hope it is only the beginning, but maybe it is also an accomplishment because it is already very strong. "

Gerard Farres Guel – KTM (3th overall): "VShe has been doing rally for ten years, I was notably a water carrier for Chaleco Lopez and Marc Coma, and now I find myself there. We are a private team, we do not have the same resources, the same engines as the official structure, but we have the will. And we are still on the podium of this Dakar. It is magic".

Adrien Van Beveren – Yamaha (4th overall): "This stage victory is a bit bitter because I took a little time from Gerard Farres but not enough. I managed to catch up yesterday, but I took a speeding penalty which put me back in 4th position. I have a feeling of frustration, because I like to win, I like to be on the podium and that won’t be the case today. I will come back stronger. I’m still having a good race, it’s a good performance. It’s a bit hard to smile because we are immediately after the finish. I would like to win the Dakar one day. It may not be the goal to win next year, but I will try to do better, to get on the podium. First, I will already have to agree not to be there today. "
