After leaving the Honda behind during the race, KTM made the experience speak by placing three of its bikes on the podium of the fifth stage, won by Price ahead of Svitko and Walkner. Second at the finish, Antoine Meo is downgraded eighth because of a 5-minute penalty.

Price always aims higher !

With 642 kilometers to cover including 328 kilometers of special, the 5th stage between Jujuy (Argentina) and Uyuni (Bolivia) presented several major difficulties, including a particularly impressive rise in altitude: for the first time in its history, the Dakar climbs above of 4,600 meters !

On the other hand, the mud formed by the rains of recent days complicates the crossing of technical passages, while appearing the first real portions requiring navigation skills.

And as this 5th day marks the second part of, all the motorcycles start with the same tires as the day before and without having benefited from mechanical intervention..

The pilots who have tapped too much in their rubber or tired their engine during consequently risk to pay it "cash" while going up towards Bolivia … At only 28 years old, the KTM official Toby Price took care to spare his mount and tires, well advised by his team which has 14 successive Dakar titles.

This management strategy is bearing fruit as the Australian crosses all the checkpoints in the lead, taking his second victory this year after dominating. Price, who is shaping up to be the possible successor to defending champion Marc Coma, was brilliant both in driving and in navigation, even managing to increase his lead in the last kilometers by following the best line..

"The last 30 or 40 kilometers were tricky for navigation: I did not expect to finish ahead with such a lead", confirms Price, 3rd in the provisional standings. "I attacked when I could and assured when I had to. In the end it was a good result and a great day. We have to continue like this and we will see where it takes us".

Downgraded Meo !

Second at the finish of this 5th day, the Frenchman Antoine Meo never ceases to impress: the one that everyone saw with difficulty on a marathon stage – especially with a significant part of navigation – defeats all predictions by finishing only 2 minutes from winner !

"It was difficult because it slipped quite a bit and the tires were very worn at the end. Second is not bad," said Meo..

"It was complicated at the end in the navigation because there were a lot of spectators and it was difficult to see the tracks. My idea is to stay in the leading group. It’s the first real step. , so we’ll see what that says about the other steps ".

Unfortunately, the five-time world enduro champion in turn suffers the consequences of the penalties: a few hours after the finish, the driver of KTM n ° 49 gets 5 minutes and drops from 2nd to 8th position..

Unlike Barreda the previous days, the Frenchman is not penalized for speeding … but for losing his time card. Frustrating … Meo fell to 9th place in the provisional.

Stefan Svitko, propelled from third to second place on the stage following Meo’s penalty, finished ahead of Matthias Walkner, signing KTM’s first hat-trick at the Dakar 2016. The two men are respectively in 2nd and 5th places in the provisional.

Honda keeps the lead

Dominator during two previous days before being downgraded for excessive speed, Joan Barreda Bort "wisely" finished the 5th stage in 4th place. The Honda official occupies the same position overall, still dominated by his teammate Paulo Gonçalves with a 1’45 lead over Svitko and 1’47 over Price..

"It was a very difficult marathon day", admits Gonçalves, 12th on the stage..

"The altitude gave me a headache, but in the end I’m happy because the bike did well and I’m having a good time. We still have a big day tomorrow, we’ll see what happens but I starts to need rest "…

"Joan was unlucky, he braked a little too late and that’s how he took penalties," said the driver of the CRF450 Rally n ° 2 sportingly..

Yamaha not yet in the game…

Despite great promises during the preparation rallies, the WRF450 Rally does not yet seem at the level of Honda and KTM: Helder Rodrigues, first Yamaha rider, finished 7th at 7’20 behind the winner and is already 13th in the provisional rank at 16 ’01…

His French teammate Adrien Van Beveren (opposite) crosses the finish line in 27th position, falling to 20th place in the provisional.

Having become an official Yamaha rider this year, Xavier de Soultrait is 19th in the stage (36th provisionally) ahead of his teammate Alessandro Boturri (17th provisional), injured in his hand following a fall.

The Sherco driver Alain Duclos signs for his part a new Top 10, which allows him to keep his 10th place overall. He is ahead of Ruban Faria’s Husqvarna at the finish.

Finally, Laia Sanz takes her marks aboard the KTM 450 Rally and sets the 21st fastest time of the day, despite a one-minute penalty. Another great performance from the multiple Spanish world champion (4 titles in enduro, 13 in trials!) Who is competing in her 6th Dakar this year. Remember that the 9th place obtained last year by the tenacious Catalan driver is the best female result in the history of the Dakar. !
