Dakar motorcycle 2020 stage 9: first victory for Quintanilla (Husqvarna)

Pablo Quintanilla’s first stage victory in Saudi Arabia allows the official Husqvarna rider to nibble four minutes from the leader of the provisional, Ricky Brabec on his Honda. Toby Price (KTM) limits the breakage in second place, but remains far away overall. Report and rankings.

Relatively discreet in pure performance, but constantly at the forefront: the so far defensive strategy of Pablo Quintanilla has earned him a good second place overall behind Ricky Brabec after nine days of racing and the cancellation of the stage 8, tragically died following a fall on Sunday…

The Husqvarna rider – 4th in the previous Dakar – is working to achieve a "reasonable" rise in power, scalded by his last stage which ended with a double ankle fracture last year. This frustrating and painful injury deprived him of competition for seven months before seeing him return to victory this summer at home, during the Atacama rally (Chile).

The n ° 5, still so fast, decided to go on the offensive on the occasion of the ninth stage of the Dakar 2020, between Wadi Al Dawasir and Haradh (Saudi Arabia): 450 km of link as a " warm-up "early this morning for a total to cover of 716 km. Quintanilla took the lead at Km 244 of the timed section, succeeding Benavides (Honda), Brabec (Honda) and Price (KTM) who in turn paved the way.

The four competitors remained grouped together with time gaps of between 30 and 40 seconds after 350 km of special! Slowed down by a minor fall, Joan Barreda then admirably whipped his official Honda to come back to this top quartet. "Bang Bang" still has a hell of a speed !

Pablo Quintanilla will eventually forge a small margin of lead of around two minutes, sufficient to secure his first victory on the superb Saudi tracks ahead of Toby Price and Joan Barreda. This success confirms the progress recorded by the Chilean on his official Husqvarna, remember it modeled on the factory KTMs.

"The Husqvarna FR 450 Rally Factory is the best bike I can have to tackle the Dakar," describes Quintanilla, who is competing in its 8th edition. "It is now a little lighter and we have also improved the reliability of the parts".

The Husqvarna factory rider dedicates this victory to Paulo Gonçalves, whom he has thought about throughout this first motorcycle stage disputed since the death of the Portuguese rider on his Hero….

"It was quite difficult to concentrate after what happened for Paulo," he explains. "But after the refueling I managed to attack well and in the end I win the stage, so I’m happy for that. I dedicate it to Paulo".

Towards the end of KTM hegemony ?

Despite this stage success, Quintanilla is still far from being able to worry the leader of the provisional classification: Ricky Brabec – 4th in the stage at 3’55 – keeps almost 21 minutes ahead of the Chilean. Fast and consistent, the American HRC driver confirms his grip on the rally.

If he were to win, Brabec would put an end to a long domination of KTM in the Dakar: the Austrian brand has 18 consecutive successes, sorry! Honda for its part has not won for 31 years (!) And the victory of the French Gilles Lalay in 1989, on the NRX800V. Suffice to say that the Japanese manufacturer is impatiently awaiting a return to the foreground !

The defending champion, Toby Price, continues to defend the Orange colors to the best of his ability in third place in the provisional. But the Australian took only two short minutes today at Brabec, which takes advantage of the speed of the CRF450 on this mostly fast course: Price still accuses 26’43 on the official Honda !

On the Yamaha side, Franco Caimi is still the best representative of the Iwata brand thanks to his 11th place on the stage: the Argentinian, for a while in the Top 5 this morning, is in 8th place overall with 1’21.04 behind . He is predeceased by the KTM of Luciano Benavides, Kevin’s younger brother at HRC. Laia Sanz, first female driver, is in 17th place in the provisional on her Gas Gas. 

Far 42nd at the finish, Adrien Metge remains the leading French driver in 12th place on his Sherco. Emmanuel Geynes leads the courageous "trunk-motorbike" category, now renamed "Original by Motul", i.e. the riders who compete in the race without assistance: equipment, spare parts and tents are transported by truck to the bivouac in a trunk (video above).
