Dakar motorcycle stage 9: Michael Metge on the attack, Van Beveren at a standstill and Toniutti at the hospital…
The 9th stage of the Dakar motorcycle is very contrasted: on the one hand France which salutes the first victory of the Nîmes rider Michael Metge on his Sherco, on the other France which mourns the failure of Adrien Van Beveren at 16 km from the ‘arrival and retirement after a fall of Julien Toniutti, the promising beginner in rally raid… Austria is rubbing its hands at the idea of the probable 18th victory of a KTM. Explanations.
Surprise guest: Michael Metge! The French rider, vice-European enduro champion in 2010, at the age of 38, offers himself his very first stage victory in the Dakar after six appearances in the "King of Rallyes", under the nose and beard of the favorites. His success is all the more tasty as his motorcycle – a Sherco 450 RTM – comes from the same region as Nîmes. !

- Dakar 2019 :
The French manufacturer associated with TVS can be proud of having recruited him alongside his brother Adrien: Michael Metge – former water carrier of Despres at Yamaha, then of Barreda at Honda – honors his status as a leader in winning this ninth stage, which formed a loop in the dunes of Pisco (Peru).
The n ° 16 won by a short header ahead of Daniel Nosiglia Jager and Pablo Quintanilla, who consolidated his second place in the provisional on his Husqvarna. The key to his success comes from the start in line of this penultimate day: left in the second wave, the Sherco pilot took advantage of the leaders’ hesitation to swoop in on the first group….
"Everyone thought that the one who was riding in front was doing a good job, but that was not the case: he got lost and we followed him", regrets Matthias Walkner, winner of the Dakar who finished 4th in the ‘stage at 3’30 from Metge. "Everyone was looking for the waypoint, I eventually found it and we ended up in a small group".
"We expected an easy day, but it was not and there was more to lose than to win. I stayed in the group without doing anything stupid," said the KTM official who points 3rd overall, 6’35 behind the leader. "I have a good chance of finishing on the podium, but the first two places are almost out of reach. I’m happy with my Dakar".
Metge "in tension until the end"
For his part, Michael Metge relishes the success in the form of a rematch: "Three years ago, I won a stage before I was withdrawn because of a penalty", he recalls. "Today was a pretty bad start and I started by making two or three mistakes. But with Nosiglia in the second row, we kept up a good pace and we caught up with the first ones who had made a small mistake of navigation".
"I was in tension until the end," admits the one who interrupts the Honda and KTM victories in this 41st edition of the Dakar. "We did the last 20 kilometers with the first ones, I knew I was going to win but it was dangerous, there was dust … I was stressed! When I crossed the line, it was huge. I’m super happy, for myself and also for the team who did a great job. We have a great bike! "
In the general classification, the Australian driver Toby Price continues to pull the chestnuts out of the fire thanks to his 5th place on the stage: the winner of the Dakar 2016 retains the leadership before the last day of racing, despite his right scaphoid broken last month.
"I would like to finish at the top: we are so close and it is so close! Everyone is still in the game," said the n ° 3 who is only 1’02 ahead of Quintanilla. "I know that tomorrow night there is a good chance that I will finish on the podium and it is already huge, but of course the goal is to try to win".
Van Beveren broken down on his Yamaha…
The other great sensation is unfortunately a disillusion: that of seeing Adrien van Beveren stopped just 16 km from the finish of the 9th stage, victim of a breakdown on his official Yamaha WRF … The northerner rider – 4th overall the day before – thus loses all chances of winning or even getting on the final podium.
That moment when ‘s dream slipped away due to a broken engine.
El momento en el que el sueño by Adrien Van Beveren se fue por culpa de un motor roto.
– DAKAR RALLY (@dakar)
The official Yamaha team evokes a "minor technical problem" to justify this setback, probably caused by a simple lack of gasoline. With his head in his hands next to his motorbike, Adrien seems struck down: how not to be after having traveled about 5,180 km to finally fail less than 500 km from the final finish ?
Van Beveren – announced as withdrawn from the race – would have finally managed to reach the finish line late in the evening: he would have classified himself in the 70th place of the stage, thus passing to the 14th position overall. However, his situation needs to be clarified because the organizer announces his possible exclusion "for having covered the last kilometers of the special in a pick-up"…
Today’s Stage 9 has brought mixed fortunes for the Yamalube Rally crew. Putting in a strong performance, has climbed to 5th in the provisional overall. Battling through a minor technical issue is en route to the Pisco bivouac
– Yamaha Racing (@yamaharacingcom)
Alexandre Kowalski, director of the Yamaha Rally team, considers for his part that the Dakar of Van Beveren is well and truly finished: "his retirement is a hard blow for all, but Adrien has proven this year again that he was one of the most complete rally drivers in the world ", regrets the French manager, stressing that the young northerner driver has remained at the forefront on each stage.
Julien Toniutti hospitalized
For Yamaha, the withdrawal of his headliner would be recorded: "making a heroic effort, he struggled for several hours in the dunes, but failed to cross the finish line", indicates the Japanese manufacturer. . in total contradiction with the race direction, which ensures that the Yamaha rider would have crossed the finish line, but potentially thanks to outside help !

In the meantime, Yamaha’s last hopes rest on Xavier de Soultrait who completed this 409 km stage in 9th place and climbs up to 5th place overall..
Finally, another big disappointment for the French clan: the French beginner Julien Toniutti, the first driver to enter both the Tourist Trophy and the Dakar, gave up after a crash !
"Julien had a bad fall and was taken to hospital in Lima for examination and treatment," said his 2B Racing team. The Lyon driver, five-time French road rally champion, brilliantly climbed to 63rd in the provisional rank before his retirement, a remarkable performance for this rookie used to asphalt but not to sand..
