On the other side of the coin, this forced the organizers to select the candidates since "only" 220 motorcycles and quads will be allowed to line up for the Dakar 2013, the start of which is scheduled for January 5 in Lima (Peru) and the finish on January 20. in Santiago (Chile).

"The difference between these two figures is explained by the particular care taken by the organizer to deliver a maximum level of safety and comfort to the competitors, as well as an optimized control of the race format", justifies the ASO in subject of this selection.

Authorization to start the Dakar will be issued according to criteria ranging from sporting references (in rally-raid and navigation, in particular) to physical capacities, including training programs.

 "Beyond the head of the race, reserved for professional pilots, the Dakar rally is by nature made for amateurs: lovers of the great outdoors and adventure," said David Castera, sporting director of the event. "However, it is essential for them to be informed, and above all as best prepared as possible for this challenge, which remains the toughest in the world. It is on these criteria that we will select them".

The Dakar 2013 route includes 8000 km, traveled through Peru, Argentina and Chile (see map opposite).

Two additional motorcycle manufacturers

In the motorcycle category, two manufacturers are added to the officially represented brands: first Honda, which will make its official comeback to the Dakar 23 years after its last participation (read).

But also Bordone Ferrari, an Italian manufacturer who engages with a new motorcycle named "Mi1" designed by Renato Ferrari and Nicoletta Elisa Altieri Bordone.

The first turns of the wheel of this "Mi1" will be to follow closely, because it could reserve some nice surprises: besides the natural enthusiasm of its designers, the fact that a certain Francisco "Chaleco" Lopez (3rd of the Dakar 2010) either at the helm suggests an interesting level of competitiveness !

KTM and its official representatives, the French Cyril Despres () and the Spaniard Marc Coma, remain however the big favorites of the motorcycle category of the Dakar 2013. To be continued on MNC: stay tuned !
