GP of Rep. Czech: Yamaha Petronas-SRT delighted for Morbidelli (2nd), less for Quartararo (7th)
Yamaha Petronas-SRT continues to claim the lion’s share in MotoGP with the splendid 2nd place of Franco Morbidelli, long leader. The private team, on the other hand, is more reserved about Fabio Quartararo’s 7th position, still leading the provisional championship. Debriefing.
Fabio Quartararo, Yamaha Petronas-SRT (2nd in qualifying and 7th in race) : "We suffered a lot in the race, from the first to the last lap, so we have to analyze that to see what we can improve to make sure that doesn’t happen again. We struggled with the tire wear on Friday, but we had improved during FP4 so I didn’t expect the tires to be this bad today ".
"I’m not really happy with seventh place but we still gained 9 points for the championship and increased our lead. However I don’t think about the championship, I just take the races one after the other. Of course, I still want to be on the podium, but it was nice to see Franco there: we’ll see what we can do in Austria ".

Franco Morbidelli, Yamaha Petronas-SRT (3rd in qualifying and 2nd in race) : "I am so happy to have finished on the podium today! It was a bit strange race because I could not attack 100%. At the beginning I was going quite fast, my pace was even better than this what I expected ".
"But Brad (Binder, Editor’s note) caught up with me and I knew he might be in a better position than me because he had the medium tire in the back (Morbidelli had opted for the soft like Viñales or Zarco, Editor’s note). I didn’t try to fight because I wanted to be sure to finish and get my first podium ".
MNC analysis : Contrasting results for the Malaysian team Petronas-SRT, who can rejoice in their tenth podium after just one season and three races among the world’s elite. To compare for example with other private teams like Avintia, at random, which climbs for the first time on the "cash register" thanks to !
The positive aspect of the balance undoubtedly goes to Franco Morbidelli, who performed well from start to finish during this Czech meeting: third on the grid, the Italian-Brazilian led the race for a long time before giving in to the rise of .
- GP of Rep. Czech : Brad Binder Statements and Analysis (1st)
Could "Franky" have produced more resistance against the KTM, with his additional experience against the South African rookie? Possible, he admits, admitting to having secured his first podium in MotoGP. His joy on arrival, shared with his mentor Valentino Rossi, was in any case a pleasure to see !
On the other side of the box, this third race is a little below expectations: Fabio Quartararo, qualified 2nd, finished a rather distant 7th position without ever having been able to directly participate in the fight for victory. More annoying: the young tricolor prodigy – who is playing only his second season, let’s remember! – lost ground at the halfway point, victim of a lack of grip.
Quartararo in delicacy with its rear tire
"It’s a good day for Franco and we are also quite satisfied with Fabio’s result," said team manager Razlan Razali without hiding a slight concern for his best colt. "Of course we have to assess what happened for Fabio, but overall we are very happy".
"El Diablo" had yet started with the medium rear tire like Rossi and Binder, which was precisely supposed to give it consistency. Failed bet for the n ° 20, who had expressed his dissatisfaction with his tire from the tests with several gestures of humor … The recurring concern of Yamaha now also affect Fabio? May the god of circuits preserve us !
This tire data was also at the center of all the debates this weekend, because it was particularly exacerbated by the poor condition of the Brno circuit: the bumpy bitumen and its poor grip caused a lot of hassle, to the point of being qualified "d ‘unacceptable for MotoGP’ by Aleix Espargaro !
The track – the last resurfacing of which dates back 12 years! – proved to be both tricky and slow, as Morbidelli points out: the pace in the race was indeed low, because everyone was driving on the defensive to avoid a fall very quickly which happened in these conditions.
The proof with the examination of the lap times: the fastest lap in the race achieved by Binder in 1’57.445 is almost a second and a half of the record for the race lap of Pedrosa in 2014 (1’56.027)! Ditto for pole: Zarco stood out in 1’55.687 against 1’54.596 (+ 1.091 sec!) for Marquez in 2016, an absolute record never broken since !
The age of these records, while MotoGP and tires improve each year, in itself reflects the reality and the extent of the problem: rare are the circuits where the references resist so long. !
The seventh place of Fabio Quartararo in these delicate conditions is therefore far from being a disaster, even rather wise: the third consecutive white result of Marc Marquez testifies to the ease with which a championship can switch, including for the favorite. Nine additional stitches in the bag are much more satisfying than a race that ended flat on the stomach by pride !
