Interview Gregory Lejosne (Yamaha): the perception of two-wheelers is changing significantly
With 28,612 registrations, Yamaha posted a slight drop of -1.4% on the French motorcycle and scooter market. Gregory Lejosne, Motorcycle Sales Director of Yamaha Motor France, establishes for Site the 2016 balance sheet of the Japanese brand and reveals its 2017 objectives. Interview.
Site: The Euro 4 emission standard has forced you to update your range for 2017 and to delete certain products from your catalog … Costly in two ways, can this standard nevertheless boost your sales next year thanks to to the attraction of the many novelties ?
Gregory Lejosne (Motorcycle Sales Director of Yamaha Motor France): Switching to a new standard is often an accelerator in the renewal of our ranges. Euro 4 is no exception to the rule. Although we can deplore the release of iconic models (…) from the market, our range was reinforced in 2017 with the introduction of strategic models (,,,, …). We are therefore in a growth perspective for 2017.

MNC: Another restriction that occurred in mid-2016 this time, has it boosted sales of your 35 kW models and kits ?
G. L .: It is still too early to draw any "statistical" lessons in terms of overall growth. Nevertheless, we see on volume references that the sales mix is moving significantly towards the 35 kW versions (+ 60% for the 35 kW).

MNC: Always cleaner and safer (ABS or combined braking compulsory), motorized two-wheelers are still not considered as a solution in town (alternating traffic, ban in town center, etc.). Are there ways to change this ?
G. L .: Traffic restrictions in urban centers affect both cars and two-wheelers. The very widely publicized pollution problem maintains this amalgam. However, the perception of two-wheelers is changing significantly. Particularly with local communities. It is increasingly seen as a future mobility solution in urban areas, as evidenced by Cityscoot’s partnership with the city of Paris. This anchoring of the two-wheeler as a mobility solution of the future will thus, very likely, be inseparable from an offer adapted in the short or medium term (electric …).

MNC: The 2017 Paris Motorcycle Show is postponed … when and for what reasons according to you? Would a hypothetical cancellation be penalizing for your activity? ?
G. L .: The visibility that a trade show confers is undeniable. But the environment has changed significantly in recent years. Reformatting is undoubtedly necessary in order to reconcile the budget envelope and attractiveness.
- MNC of January 17, 2017 :
- MNC Premium :
MNC: How do you feel about the overall evolution of the French motorcycle market in 2016? ?
G. L .: We experienced a significant change in the market in 2016: + 7.5% Naturally, this growth strongly stimulated by registrations "on stock" at the end of the year must be put into perspective. We can see that 60% of registrations in December are made "on stock", which allows the December market to show growth of 65%! Beyond this exceptional event, 2016 growth is around 4%. Which is very encouraging and thus confirms the, with a cumulative growth of 10%.
MNC: What is your assessment for your brand in 125 and large cubes? ?
G. L .: The results are positive, in 2016 we confirmed the brand’s leadership in the entire two-wheel market, despite a first quarter which penalized us with the signing of the late "100 horsepower" implementing decree (April). Likewise, the prospect of the Euro 4 deadline on January 1, 2017 has led to certain tensions in terms of availability in the fourth quarter of 2016 (Euro 3 stock exhausted), our main Euro 4 references being introduced in January 2017.
- MNC special file :
MNC: Which models have performed particularly well this year ?
G. L .: The maintained its volumes (4691 units) and confirms its place as a bestseller on the motorcycle market. With 830 registrations over 6 months (introduced in July), it immediately established itself as the bestseller of the big sporty roadster. Likewise, the 2016 evolutions of the FJR1300 enabled it to post growth of 34%.
MNC: Who are those who have stayed behind? Why ?
(No answer, Editor’s note)
MNC: Did your 2016 novelties reach their commercial objectives? ?
G. L .: Overall, all of our business objectives have been achieved.
MNC: What was the pleasant surprise of your year 2016? And the less good ?
G. L .: On the commercial front, in addition to the previous comments, 2016 confirmed the success of the NMAX 125cc which allows us to offer a complete 125cc scooter offer from the NMA to the X-MAX without forgetting the Tricity. We may perhaps regret the late introduction of the Tracer 700 in the middle of summer, which did not allow us to achieve the planned volumes. In terms of sport, our formidable 2016 winners! Yamha wins all the French motorcycle and quads championships.
MNC: According to you, what was the highlight of 2016 in the world of two-wheelers? ?
G. L .: 2016 was characterized by a regulatory environment impacting our activity (100CV, 35KW …) and the confirmation of a growing market.
MNC: What are your good resolutions for the year 2017 ?
G. L .: With the launch of major new products (T-MAX, MT-09, X-MAX 300, R6 …), our sales targets are legitimately on the rise. Beyond the quality of our offer, proximity to our network and our customers remains the essential condition for achieving our objectives. This is reflected, in particular, in the acceleration of the upgrading of our dealerships, and an always close relationship with our customers. In particular by a stronger presence at national events (Lyon, Cagnes-sur-Mer, Marseille trade fairs, etc.).
MNC: What are your major events in 2017 ?
G. L .: On the commercial front, the first semester will be punctuated by the introduction of major new products.
Success is also inseparable from synergy with all of our partners: Moto-schools (Zebra, Moto-conduct, CFM, CER …..), driving schools, and TRAIL-RANDO for the escape ! In terms of sport, the Dakar, Le Touquet and all the national championships. We start 2017 with a magnificent fourth place in A. Van Beveren at the Dakar for his second participation !
MNC: To conclude, what did you order from Santa Claus this year ?
G. L .: A less anxiety-provoking geopolitical environment, confirmation of growth despite the 2017 political news (elections …) and good weather !
