Interview Lionel Favre (Peugeot Scooters): We are renewing success in our three segments
With 3,229 registrations, Peugeot Scooters posted an increase of + 3% on the French market for scooters over 50 cc (excluding Metropolis 400). Lionel Favre, Peugeot Scooters commercial director, draws up the French manufacturer’s 2016 report for Site and unveils its 2017 objectives. Interview.
Site: The Euro 4 emission standard has forced you to update your range for 2017 and to remove certain products from your catalog … Costly in two ways, can this standard nevertheless boost your sales next year thanks to the attraction of many new products ?
Lionel Favre, Peugeot Scooters commercial director: Peugeot Scooters has truly been able to transform this field of regulatory constraints into an opportunity: this has been our philosophy with regard to the Euro 4 standard. Indeed, if the Euro 4 standard naturally relates to pollution control with emissions divided by 2 compared to the standard Euro 3 and with guaranteed depollution durability for 20,000 km, it also includes other components. On the safety aspect, Euro 4 regulations require at least combined braking for the 125 cc and ABS becomes mandatory for larger displacements. On this safety aspect, Peugeot Scooters, the first manufacturer to have launched ABS on a 125 cc scooter in 2002, goes further than the standard and will offer ABS solutions on the majority of its 125 models in 2017.

In addition, the new SmartMotion motor presented by the brand does better than the standard with a noise level 2 dB lower than the required level. The switch to the Euro 4 standard is also an opportunity to improve the readability of the 125 cc and more engine range of the Lion brand. Thus, it will be mainly equipped with three main families of Euro 4 engines with controlled consumption and emissions:
- EasyMotion: 125/200 cc injection range, for customers looking for an efficient and economical engine
- SmartMotion: 125 cc injection range, compact and modular, intended for customers looking for an urban, economical and virtuous engine
- PowerMotion: 125/200/400 cc 4-valve range, powerful and versatile, intended for customers looking for a large-range engine
MNC: Always cleaner and safer (ABS or combined braking compulsory), motorized two-wheelers are still not considered as a solution in town (alternating traffic, ban in town center, etc.). Are there ways to change this ?
L. F .: Yes and the current legislation allows these changes to be brought about, for example the advent of Euro 4 which now applies to motorized 2 and 3-wheelers since January 2017. Our Euro 4 vehicles are less subject to traffic restrictions in large cities and therefore represent a potential alternative to people owning, for example, a car or a two-wheeler associated with a Crit’Air 4 or 5 sticker. The new Peugeot Metropolis, equipped with the new Euro 4 engine therefore benefits from this title of the Crit’Air 1 sticker. This allows the driver to be less subject to traffic restrictions.
Beyond Euro 4, Peugeot Scooters strives through its know-how to market vehicles that are ever more respectful of the environment. A pioneer in the field of electric mobility, the Peugeot Scooters brand is the first to have entered the segment when it launched Scootelec in 1996, then the E-Vivacity in 2011. In November 2016, Peugeot Scooters presented at the EICMA GenZe , for "Generation Zero Emission", developed in collaboration with GenZe by Mahindra. This new electric scooter today represents the best synthesis of electric scooters on the market, both in terms of its robustness and its range, for professionals and individuals. A worthy heir to the American "Pick-up" spirit with its carrying capacity, GenZe embodies this heritage, while combining cutting-edge technologies developed in the very heart of Silicon Valley where it was designed.

MNC: The 2017 Paris Motorcycle Show has been postponed … until when and for what reasons do you think? Would a hypothetical cancellation be penalizing for your activity? ?
L. F .: Keeping the Motorcycle Show in "good condition" brought little added value. We think it’s a good thing to reconsider its format. There are currently several options under study, which would be a good springboard for the Lion brand to announce any new developments ahead of EICMA.

- MNC Premium :
MNC: How do you feel about the overall evolution of the French motorcycle market in 2016? ?
L. F .: Regarding the 2 and 3 wheel scooter market, the 2016 trend is negative by -2%, but this is especially true for the three-wheeler market which recorded a decrease of -6.4%. The lack of novelties contributed to this situation. The launch of our new Peugeot Metropolis will, I am convinced, be the necessary engine to observe further market growth..

- MNC of November 30, 2016 :
MNC: What is your assessment of your brand? ?
L. F .: In 50 cc we have 18% market share, Peugeot Scooters is the n ° 1 brand with 16129 units (+ 0.5%). In addition to 50 cc we are the fourth brand with 8.4% market share for 4,793 units (+ 0.3%) and in three-wheelers over 350 cc we have a market share of 20.6% market share with 1,565 units (+ 1.6%). In 2016, our three lights are green !
- MNC Premium :
MNC: Which models have performed particularly well this year ?
L. F .: Peugeot Metropolis held up well in a declining 3-wheel market in 2016. The arrival of the new ABS version (ABS, anti-slip, emergency warning, etc.) will confirm our position as No. 1 challenger.
MNC: Who are those who have stayed behind? Why ?
L. F .: The Django 125 is a well-born scooter, which perfectly complements our range in the neo-retro segment. It must and will find its place, but its launch was not aggressive enough, so we will help it find its true place in this segment. Inspired by the legendary S55 scooter, Django evokes the 1950s and the prestigious history of the Lion brand. It is also the only scooter on the market with a customization concept allowing you to create your own custom scooter, offering 5 customization elements and more than 100,000 combinations !
- MNC test of October 7, 2014 :
Did your new products meet their commercial objectives ?
L. F .: Peugeot Scooters did not launch any new products in 2016. However, the brand presented a limited series Metropolis Black Edition which was revealed exclusively in France in April 2016 at the Cagnes-sur-Mer Motorcycle and Scooter Show . This new model has thus joined the Peugeot Metropolis collection in a very elegant matte black version, produced in only 350 units..
MNC: What was the pleasant surprise of your year 2016? And the less good ?
L. F .: This is the first year for a long time that Peugeot Scooters has returned to success in its three segments, with in addition many projects for tomorrow. The bad news is the decline in the three-wheeler market that was not predicted for 2016.
MNC: According to you, what was the highlight of 2016 in the world of two-wheelers? ?
(No answer)
MNC: What are your good resolutions for the year 2017 ?
L. F .: Peugeot Scooters is continuing its “Forward” plan in 2017. It is a three-year plan (2016-2018) built around the move upmarket of Peugeot Scooters products and its rationalization and international development of the brand. Our key actions to achieve our 2017 objectives will be embodied by:
- The launch of the new Peugeot Metropolis and Belville (large wheel segment), the Speedfight 4 125cc, GenZe and new engines (SmartMotion)
- The international opening of markets (Cambodia, Africa, Middle East) and more recently in Vietnam (November 2016)
- The development of sales of parts and accessories
- Transition to the Euro 4 standard for 50 cc scooters, including 2-stroke
- MNC of November 30, 2016 :
MNC: What are your major events in 2017 ?
L. F .: This year we present three new products.
- The new Peugeot Metropolis. Richly equipped, Peugeot Metropolis is recognized among the most technological scooters on the market, whose strengths serve driver safety as much as their comfort. The requirements of the Euro 4 standard provide an opportunity to further enhance its unique performance, through several key improvements. It is available in March 2017 in concession.
- Belville is expected in summer 2017. This new vehicle expands Peugeot Scooters’ large-wheel range alongside the Tweet. Recalling the eponymous Parisian district, Peugeot Belville lays claim to its roots as much as it embodies the pleasures of the city. A model richly endowed and full of elegance, born to bring to the big wheel segment – the largest in Europe – the style it deserves.
- Finally, in the fall, GenZe will hit the market. This new electric scooter today represents the best synthesis of electric scooters on the market, both in terms of its robustness and its autonomy for professional players, companies and individuals.
- MNC test of May 2, 2013 : Duel Metropolis 400 RS Vs MP3 500 LT
2017 will also be a rich year for Peugeot Motocycles in Moto3. 119 years after the presentation of the first Peugeot motorcycle, the manufacturer continued to write its history in 2016 by making its comeback after more than 60 years of absence from the world of official international racing. We have two objectives in mind: to nourish the Peugeot Motocycles DNA made up of challenge, innovation and competition, and to show that the brand is able to compete with competitors of remarkable level. For the 2017 season, Peugeot Motocycles is pleased to welcome two new riders: Jakub Kornfeil and Patrick Pulkkinen. The coming season promises to be rich and full of surprises.

MNC: To conclude, what did you order from Santa Claus this year ?
L. F .: More moments of freedom for everyone to stroll around Montmartre in Django, and on sunny days enjoy a long weekend as a duo and get some fresh air on the handlebars of a new Peugeot Metropolis !
