The French motorcycle market is on the rise for the third consecutive year: 151,761 motorcycles and scooters over 50 cc were registered in 2016 (+ 7.5% Vs 2015). Exciting, these spectacular results should however be moderated… Figures, graphs and analysis: here is the full annual review of Site.

The end of 2016 was exceptional for the French motorcycle market (motorcycles and scooters from 100 cc for the Mio de Sym to 2300 cc for the Triumph Rocket)! After a month of (+ 24.7% Vs), the month of December blew up its own counter: + 65.3% compared to an already happy one…

Last month, 11,930 (yes, eleven thousand nine hundred and thirty!) New registration cards for motorized two-wheelers – excluding 50 cc mopeds – were issued by the French administration. Compiled by the Auxiliary Automobile Association (AAA), they are now analyzed in detail by the Journal moto du Net. Recall that there were some, against .

It is among the 125 cc that the increase is the most spectacular: 4,764 registrations are recorded in the last month of 2016, almost twice as many as in December 2015 (or + 96.2%!) And half more than in November 2016 ().

This crazy success is very easy to explain: since January 1, 2017, only scooters and motorcycles meeting the Euro 4 antipollution standard can be sold "new". The previous models were therefore registered by the manufacturers and their dealerships before December 31, 2016, in order to be able to market them this year in the "zero kilometer second hand" department..

The big cubes, forced to respect the same standard, took advantage of the same phenomenon, but smoothed out by allowing French bikers to ride full and buy unbridled motorcycles … or rather, in their original configuration.

In December 2016, 7166 maxiscooters and motorcycles of "+ 125 cc" were registered in France against 5459 the previous month … and 4789 in December 2015, a jump of + 49.6% which is good for morale, failing to completely fill the dealers’ cash drawers.

Much of the December surplus – all of it ?! – has not left the stores and has yet to find a taker. Always well infiltrated and informed, the little finger of Site understands that the sales will be particularly interesting this winter: notice to amateurs !

To explain the tremendous boom in the market last month – alone responsible for half of the annual increase! -, MNC observes at the same time that December 2016 had the same number of working days as its counterpart in 2015 (22) certainly, but benefited from an additional "opening day of concessions" (23 Vs 22): which would neglect an increase in 4.5% of its activity – and of its income, above all ?!

For their part, Meteo France experts note in their December 2016 report that "the sunshine was very generous throughout the country, with a surplus of more than 50% and that" the rainfall experienced a record deficit close to 80% on average across the country. ”Unexpected conditions for buying a new two-wheeler and enjoying it immediately !

Nothing to do with the sadly gray, dirtily damp and unpleasantly cold days of the beginning of January 2017 … After having heavily force-fed during the end of year celebrations, the market of Christmas motorcycle isn’t it likely to find the recovery a little harsh? The complete renewal of the motorcycle and scooter ranges due to the changeover to Euro 4 gives hope to the contrary. To be continued in future MNC reviews !

But rather than thinking about 2017, let’s take stock of 2016 together: details and explanations of the evolution of the market over the whole year are available on the following pages (or one-off purchase): good reading !
