Motorcycle and scooter market 2018: successful first half for France
The first half of 2018 went well for the French motorcycle market: in six months, 91,520 registrations were recorded (+ 6.7%). The 125 cc accelerated well, but the big engines stood out with their best score of the last ten years… Balance sheet !
Page 3 – Market 125: 25,460 immates (+ 11.9%)
Honda occupied the field in June and registered a quarter more machines than last May! Compared to last year, the score of the French number one in 125 cc is down (-4.6% Vs June 2017 and -3.4% over the half-year) but it remains significantly higher than that of its main rival Yamaha: 6,242 registrations against 5,453.
The PCX125 delivered a big offensive at the very end of the first semester: 262 sales last May, 618 in June! Better than a simple support, Honda’s compact scooter takes advantage of its update to improvise center-forward. He thus accentuates his broad domination over his direct opponent among the Blues: the Nmax (1621 to 864).
On the contrary, the Forza 125 was less impactful in June than in May with respectively 386 and 421 registrations. On the reserve, the favorite scooter of the French – since its release three years ago – occupies second place in the provisional 2018 and is also left behind…
At 500 lengths of the new Xmax 125 at the end of May, the Forza finds itself at over 850 a month later. Will the developments for 2018 of the "top" Honda model be sufficient to reverse the – heavy – trend? Match to follow in the next MNC market reports…
The CB125R also descends from its pedestal: in the wake of the Seventy in May (so 2nd bike and 5th 125 scratch), the enticing novelty 2018 falls to 11th place in June with 154 immats, against 170 for its elder CB125F. .. and especially 173 and 185 for his sworn enemies MT125 and 125 Duke.
We note in passing that the CB125F hardly suffers from competition from the CB125R even within Honda dealerships: the little news has accumulated 864 sales since January 1, the old most basic still totals 693 (against 804 on the first semester 2017). Very good for Honda so !
Yamaha, which marked Honda very closely in May, was once again dominated in the sixth month. However, it is not for lack of trying: the Blues of Iwata have also managed to increase their sales by + 12.4% over the last month (Vs June 2017), and by + 27.6% over the last month. entire first half of 2018 !
Let us recall to put these formidable increases in perspective that the French brand MBK, owned by Yamaha, was put on hold at the end of last year. Customers who are satisfied with their Evolis or Occito and wish to replace them are now invited to obtain supplies from Yam dealers! In the first half of 2017, as a reminder, "MotoBeKane" had registered 822 machines.
The new Xmax is particularly efficient. In June, it carried out a great relaunch: 784 copies left the MBK factory in St-Quentin precisely – in Aisne in France! – were registered within a month. The previous favorite (two-wheeled) scooter of French motorists will he recover his throne ?
For its part, the Nmax 125 goes up the slope a little in June with 212 registrations which again open the doors to the monthly Top 5. Overall, the small scooter also reaches fifth place that it shares with Honda’s CB125R (864 immats each).
Third Yamaha model in the Top 15 of the 125 best sellers in France, the MT125 was a little better in June than in May and thus doubles the CB125R (173 to 154). The mini MT nevertheless loses a small place in favor of the 125 Duke. In total, it remains on the "handlebars" with the CB125F: 698 to 693.
The "big" three-wheeled scooters |
Very big month of June for Piaggio which renews its MP3 (300/350 and 500) in 2018 and registered 1,127 tricycles, half more than last May and not far from a quarter more than twelve months ago (871 in June 2017 as a reminder). All in all, the Pontedera brand still outrageously dominates "its" sector: 4,002 MP3s (Yourban included) have reached our cities in six months (+ 11.3%).
Peugeot accelerated in June with 253 registrations recorded by the French administration, an increase of + 22% compared to May. Despite this, the Metropolis 400 – its different versions with small or medium wheels, coupled braking or ABS – does not beat or even equal its score of last year (344 immates in June 2017). Over the whole of the first half of 2018, the Mandeure brand saw its sales of three-wheelers (accessible to holders of a four-wheel license via the 7-hour training course) fall by -19.2%. Peugeot is therefore stung of market share by its two Italian adversaries: Piaggio and … Quadro ! Le petit poucet grew in June and exploded its counter with 105 immats: it doubled its score compared to June 2017, and is up by + 162% compared to May 2018! The new entity "Quadro Vehicles" is at the origin of this formidable leap … one-off, or lasting momentum? To be continued on MNC, stay connected ! |
In June, Piaggio accelerated as hard as Yamaha … if we compare its 620 immats to its score in May 2018 (+ 15%). Compared with June 2017, however, the balance is negative (-8.4%). The scooter specialist – especially on three wheels !? – therefore ended this first half with a disappointing -11.6%, i.e. the biggest drop in the Top 10 manufacturers.
The small form of the Italian Reds is above all due to the absence of a GT scooter in his team: after playing extra time, the XEvo ended up joining the locker room, exactly a year ago … Piaggio lost 2 , 5 points of market share in the operation (9.3% at end-June).
Best seller of the Piaggio group in France, the Vespa GTS – not to be confused with the Sym GTS! – was content to reproduce in June its score of May (195) and loses two places in the monthly ranking. He finished 10th in the first half of 2018 with 684 registrations … He was eighth in the first half of 2017 with 743 registrations.
The Liberty (is) defending itself a little better and supports the GTS correctly in general with 629 registrations registered in France since the beginning of the year. In June, however, Piaggio’s entry-level "big wheels" hardly improved its May mark (+ 2 immats).
A third scooter completes the group shot – of the group – Piaggio: the Vespa Primavera which was waiting for summer to be good walk driving: 157 immats in June, synonymous with Top 10! He thus accumulated 506 registrations in six months and suddenly gained three places in the provisional ranking. !
Ejected from the overall Top 15, the Medley counter-attacked with 104 immats in June. Piaggio / Vespa thus places four of its models in the monthly Top 15, demonstrating that many French people appreciate neo-retro … Italian scooters !
Designed to ride the vintage wave (which blithely exceeds the two-wheeler sector), the Django is less successful than its transalpine cousins: 73 units sold last June, or 253 in six months. It is, at the very least, two times less than its competitors.
Even more disappointing, the Satelis, which is measured against the Xmax and Forza, has only collected 72 registrations last month and 329 since January 1, 2018. The spearhead (two-wheelers) of the Mandeure plant is therefore not included. in its national Top 15, monthly and cumulative.
Behind the Satelis and alongside the Django, the brand new Belville charmed 231 French people. An honorable score for a scooter with large wheels, especially if we compare it to the European bestseller, the Honda SH (394 immates).
Far from the Japanese leaders and still jostled by the Taiwanese outsiders, the French brand still wins a place between May and June (fifth therefore of the sixth month). It finished fourth in the first half of 2018 with 1268 registration cards and came out with a reassuring + 46.9%, echoing its poor start to 2017: the handover between the Satelis Euro3 and its replacement Euro4 had been particularly long..
Kymco is the only manufacturer in the Top 10 to have recorded fewer immats in June (259) than in May (264)! Released last year, the X-Town nevertheless hangs on: thirteenth last May with 116 registrations, it catches up in extremis in fifteenth position with just 100 registrations. The sporty GT scooter loses one place overall: 14th with 483 registrations since January 1.
The Taiwanese manufacturer therefore ranks seventh behind his compatriot Sym and the French Peugeot and Mash. Fifth in the provisional with 1111 registrations, Kymco loses contact with Peugeot and sees its rivals grow in its mirrors: Sym is 52 lengths, Mash at 77…
Sym had a very big month of June, registering a third of 125 cc more than in May! Compared with June 2017, however, the second Taiwanese brand suffered a small -2.2%. But that did not prevent him from overtaking Mash in the sixth round: 1059 Sym immates in total, against 1034 for the SIMA brand..
We note at Sym that the captain’s armband goes from the big GTS (194 immats this first semester against 347 a year ago) to the small Jet 14 (300 against 177). A stint undoubtedly temporary because the Cruisym made a remarkable entry on the ground with 54 immats in June (136 in all).
Fourth in May 2018, just ahead of Kymco and Peugeot, Mash was fifth in June with 283 registrations. Overall, the Sino-Burgundy manufacturer occupies seventh place with 1034 registrations, a decrease of -2.8% (vs. 1st half of 2017), a loss of two places and a decline of half a point in terms of share Steps.
Accumulated by the all-new CB125R at the end of May, the Seventy is back on its throne thanks to 260 new registrations last month. The little "mashine" – and its many variations of roadster, Cafe Racer, Dirt Track, etc. – thus once again becomes the favorite small motorbike of the French..
In the segment of small motorcycles which have everything of a large, KTM is beaten by Honda and its new recruit: the 125 Duke has a total of 757 registrations against 864 for the CB125R. But in June alone, the mini Duke had the advantage (185 to 154) … ?
Confidential, sales of RC125 also participate in the increase in sales of Oranges in France this first half: 94 mini sports have found buyers in the last six months (Vs 71 a year ago). Can sales increase further next year? ?…
The French KTM dealers hope that in 2019, Zarco and Tech3 will obtain otherwise good, encouraging results: the kids have to be dreamed of to make (c) attack their parents! For comparison, Aprilia registered 14 RS4s (fourteen …) in six months,, Yamaha 92 YZF-R125 and Suzuki 72 GSX-R125…
Suzuki precisely reappears in the monthly Top 10: in June, the Japanese brand ranks ninth with 191 registrations. This is almost double the number of last year (+ 94.9%)! More than the previously mentioned mini GSX-Rs, it is the GSX-S125 that give Suz ‘a good start to the year: 276 new roadsters have been sold.
The Burgman remains the best selling yellow of Hamamatsu in France with 306 copies sold. Like its great rival XEvo in the "beautiful" days, the good – but old – Suzuki scooter is resisting. Overall, Suzuki bounces back (+ 65.1% vs. 1st half of 2017) and escapes relegation.
In June, Brixton beat Orcal (136-127) and thus closes the monthly board. Its BX has gained 20 registration cards and one place (therefore 13th) compared to the lovely month of May. In total, the little neo-retro reaches for the first time the provisional Top 15 with 459 immats … and gets closer to the Astor.
The DIP brand has also proved less valiant than that of the KSR group! Orcal has lost two places in one month: 127 immats in June, 5 less than last May. His Astor stalls at the end of June under 500 units and loses a small place overall (13th). The second half promises to be sporty !
In the first half of 2018, “other” manufacturers registered 4,699 125 cc motorcycles and scooters in France, 900 more than last year (+ 23.7%). We find in the order: Bullit with 517 immats, Brixton 459, FB Mondial 274, BMW 256 (C Evolution equivalent 125), Archive Motorcycle 235, Keeway 226, "fire" MBK 208, Rieju 190, Beta and Masai 177 (each ), Benelli 176, Daelim 175, Sherco 157, Neco 128, Aprilia 124, Moto SPA 99, Kawasaki 94 (scooter J125), 83 Sky Team, 78 Fantic, 67 Zero MOtorcycles, etc.
