Motorcycle and scooter market 2018: successful first half for France
The first half of 2018 went well for the French motorcycle market: in six months, 91,520 registrations were recorded (+ 6.7%). The 125 cc accelerated well, but the big engines stood out with their best score of the last ten years… Balance sheet !
Page 5 – Market over 125: 66,060 immates (+ 4.8%)
Yamaha dropped slightly between May (2951 immats) and June 2018 (2832). Compared to the excellent month of June 2017 – marked by the arrival of the new (s) Tmax 530 -, the Blues of Iwata also lost, by -19.7%. But they remain much more efficient than their opponents !
In the first half of the year, Yamaha sold almost 50% more vehicles than each of its three main rivals: 12,457 registrations for Yam (-0.9% Vs 1st half of 2017), against 8,756 for Honda (+7 , 2%), 8596 for BMW (-5.9%) and 8425 for Kawasaki (-2.4%).
The best selling motorcycle in France over 125 cc remains the MT-07. The little roadster, revised for 2018, allows itself to go a little further in June: 827 immates against 925 in May. His pursuers keep their "cruising" speed, twice as low: 415 for the Z650 and 436 for the Z900.
The Yamaha "roadstar" is once again accompanied by two teammates in June: the Tmax and the Tracer 900 exchange their second and third places. The maxi-adored maxi scooter of the French consolidates its fourth place overall, far ahead of its rivals: the X-Adv 750 (1134 points for the Honda team) and Xmax 300 (838 for Yamaha, again).
Yamaha’s third best seller in France, the Tracer 900 (helped by its new GT version) took seventh place overall in the R1200GS Adventure. The two motorcycles do not play in the same category? In terms of pricing, that’s for sure. And then the Yam ‘is not so adventurous at heart … But for motorcycle-work-sleep, the match is open !
The MT-09 places a small acceleration in the month of June (268 immats) and also dribbles the BMW maxi-maxitrail. The sophisticated "maxi-mid-size" roadster, refined in 2018 (SP version!), However, does not have the legs to go for the Zed "new without aids": 1212 registrations in all for the Yam-miam, 2113 for the Kawa-bunga.
On a par with Kawasaki at the end of May 2018 (respectively 6812 and 6807 immats!), Honda took the advantage just before half-time was called: 8765 to 8569! The Tokyo Reds are also the only ones to have progressed in June: 1,944 immates in 2018 against 1,774 in 2017 (+ 9.6%).
Honda’s biggest sale in France is still the "small" CB500F: in the Top 5 of June thanks to its 333 registrations, the – true – medium displacement roadster is also close to the Top 5 overall, currently completed by the " large "R1200GS.
In the trail department, we also note at the tail of the general Top 15 the presence of the CB500 version X with 754 immats. The new version of the V-Strom 650 is not very far with 659 registrations, while the high road Tracer 700 is slowing down slightly this year (655 immats). The Himalayan 410 is proportionately very successful (514 immats), more than the Versys 650 (507).
Still at Honda, the X-Adv 750 had a good sixth month: it jumped from 12th place in May to 7th in June with 329 additional sales. The "scootrail" passes in front of a certain R1200GS from which it is inspired in terms of philosophy (SUV for city dwellers in a hurry), but remains far from the Tmax with which it shares other essential values (accessibility, practicality and ease).
However, in the same spirit of "adventurer of the cities" as the X-Adv, the Africa Twin slips out of the Top 15 in June. The arrival of Adventure Sports, however, allows it to improve its score in the first half: 836 immats this year against 735 last year. The DCT version is also progressing by a hundred immats (655 in the last six months).
Eighth best-selling heavy-duty engine in May, the CB1000R was replaced in June in the monthly Top 15 by the GoldWing: 177 new "GL1800s" convinced French bikers. With its 607 registrations, the Japanese 6-cylinder (all versions combined) nevertheless leans against its German counterpart mounted on the K1600B, GT and GTL (234, 264 and 260 immats respectively).
Second big cube constructor in the first half of 2017, BMW is satisfied with third place this year. Thanks to its relatively good month of June 2018 (better than May, worse than June 2017 …), the propeller brand ejects Kawasaki from the two podiums, both in the monthly ranking and in the aggregate !
In the wheel of the Akashi firm at the end of May, the Germans finally complete this first half of 2018 with an advantage of around 150 units over Kawa … but with nearly 500 lengths behind their own brand registered the year past, i.e. 5.9% less volume and 1.5 point loss in market share.
Sales of R1200GS and Adventure are doing wonderfully well, "danke schon" for them! With 1496 and 1162 respective registrations, the "Behème" maxitrails explode their 2017 counters, stopped at 1319 and 998 at the end of the first semester.
It is on the side of the small "Gueesses" that things get stuck: the new F750GS and F850GS did not arrive until May in the French dealerships … thus leaving the field and the road free to the Tiger 800s that Triumph is also renewing in 2018 ! Summer and the start of the school year are shaping up to be hot in this segment.
At the same time, the R1200RT – which French bikers preferred to the GS a few years ago – is also losing momentum: in the provisional Top 15 2018 at the end of May, it leaves it at the end of June, for 10 immates (744). Updated in 2017, the S1000R, RR and XR series (roadster, sport and "trail") is also running out of steam in 2018.
The R nineT and its four versions (Scrambler, Urban, Pure and Racer) also retreated in the first half of the year: in the first six months of 2017, the five neo-retros totaled 1,111 sales in France. In the last six months, they have collected 971.
Kawasaki, whose two "best-zellers" have just blown out their first candle, is resisting rather well: relegated to fourth position in French sales of "+ 125 cc" by BMW during the sixth month, the Akashi Greens remain in the race for second place 2018, 340 lengths behind Honda.
The Z900 is benefiting from an A2 version this year to make progress … But this also makes its sister Z650 regress slightly, and the latest Z800s marketed last year are not compensated: at the end of June, the two "Zed" are not separated by only one registration, 2113 to 2112.
After a very noticed entry in the French dealerships this winter, the Z900RS again points the end of its round headlight in the Top 15 of June with 163 registrations. It thus confirms its status as the first neo-retro on the market with a total of 859 units sold. The XSR900 in comparison, charmed only 182 French.
Still in the Kawasaki 2018 novelty department, the Ninja H2s (the vast majority of SX SE “road” vehicles) have cracked 217 bikers – and how many radars crackle ?! – since the beginning of the year. That’s more than the Ninja ZX-10R / R (166) or the ZZR1400 (83) … and barely less than the much more reasonable Ninja 400 (252).
Renewed last year, the Z1000SX is down sharply: 466 immats in the first half of 2018 against 700 over the same period in 2017. The Vulcans S on the contrary, is progressing dramatically (450 Vs 362) … As if the arrival of the Rebel 500 (472 immats) at Honda also benefited Kawasaki … but cost Harley-Davidson !
At the great specialist in custom indeed, sales of Street 750 are down again (57 immats in six months …) and those of the Rod version do not take off (80). Produced in India, these two American machines will not be overtaxed in Europe. But their rating shouldn’t go up for all that…
To avoid copious customs taxes, the large engines currently "Made in Milwaukee" (Wisconsin, USA) will be produced outside the United States by 2020. In the meantime, the firm has decided to take charge of the brutal and important ones. tariff increases for these motorcycles on the old continent. Everything is OK ?
When in doubt or as a precaution, many French "bikers" went to their dealership last month: sales increased by + 18% compared to May, and even more compared to June 2017! Cumulatively, Harley-Davidson has 5,321 sales in France: the basis for a new record…?
Triumph also signs a remarkable first half: with its 4,772 registrations, the English manufacturer almost maintains its market share despite the declining logic of its bestseller: the Street Triple 765 (S, R and RS combined) released in 2017…
Thirteenth in sales for the month of May 2018 with 165 registrations, the "Designed in England, made in Thailand" roadster was knocked out of the French Top 15 in June (136 registrations). With its 735 registrations in total, the Street Triple (for license A) occupies 17th place in the French "+ 125" ranking, fourth in the "maxi-mid-size" category. FYI, the Street Triple 660 (A2 license) has 298.
The Bonneville T120 and T100 continue to charm the "Frenchies": the first won 549 bikers in the first half of the year, the second 461. Unsurprisingly, the success of the all-new Speedmaster is more measured: 217 registrations for the most American of the British . That’s as much as the Thruxton R (216) which is entering its third year of marketing.
Baptized the Bonneville of the 21st century by Triumph, the Speed Triple 1050 benefits from the major overhaul of its engine in 2018 to take over the reins of the maxiroadster category with 478 immats, or 6 more than the popular 1290 Super Duke R. Relaunched this year , the CB1000R climbed to the third step of the provisional podium with 374 registrations … registered in just three months.
Reference in terms of maxisportif maxiroadster as we have just seen, KTM is also experiencing remarkable success in the maxitrail category (maxisportif "ready to race"!): The 1290 Super Adventure has accumulated 488 registrations since the start of the year (209 for the most temperate 1090 Adventure).
But the machine which enabled the Austrians to achieve an extraordinary month of May 2018 (777 registration!) And a very solid month of June (658 registration, + 40.6%) is smaller. This is the 790 Duke, best seller of the Mattighofen firm with 579 copies sold.
The arrival of this mid-capacity roadster in the Katoche range propels the manufacturer into another dimension: with 3485 sales in the first half of the year, KTM occupies seventh place in the French ranking (ninth a year ago) and is ahead, by nothing. certainly (two immats!), the general practitioner Suzuki…
Seventh in the month of June with 835 registration cards (i.e. 40% more than in May, but 21.2% less than in June 2017), Suzuki ends this first half of 2018 in the red (mauve in the MNC tables): -0.9%, or 31 units that cost him seventh place overall…
MNC notes the breakthrough of the GSX-S750 towards the 10th monthly place with 204 registrations, which allows it to join the 2018 French Top 15 in the final tour of the first semester: 776 immats in all … against 1005 there is a year. Limited series therefore do not work miracles.
To win, you have to offer the right product. This is the case with the V-Strom 650 which tumbles to 12th place in the monthly ranking with 183 immats and occupies the head of sales of mid-displacement trails. On the whole of the first six months, however, the CB500X keeps the advantage with 754 immats (Vs 659). A signal for the English and German competition whose trails are more and more sophisticated, therefore expensive ?
Third Suzuki model present in the Top 15 of June: the SV650 which provides the Hamamatsu firm with 158 additional registrations. In total, the small V-twin has 640 registrations since January 1. That’s 36 better than last year. But six times less than the MT-07 !
Ducati receives the worst score in the first half of 2018: -7.3% Vs 2017, i.e. a loss of half a point in market share … Borgo Panigale’s firm, however, released important new products this year. First, its new V4-powered Panigale.
Since the start of the year, 293 Italian Super (be) bikes have joined our roads, or rather our circuits, so dangerous is it – for the license more than for the pilot? – to drive on the open road in France with such a machine … The score of the Panigale V4 is honorable, nothing more: BMW sold 155 S1000RR, Aprilia 108 RSV4. Among the Japanese, there are 263 YZF-R1 / M, 224 GSX-R1000 / R, 166 ZX-10R / R and 156 CBR1000RR / SP.
Released in April, the Scrambler 1100 brought the Reds 247 registrations, which did not yet completely fill – or is at the origin of – the erosion of sales of the Scrambler 800 on the one hand (389 registrations in six months), Monster 1200 on the other (129 standard and R).
Likewise, the new Multistrada 1260 (389 immats) which gradually replaces the 1200 (69 immats) in the dealerships, struggles to offset the fall of the young Multi 950 (178). Attention, the Motorcycle Journal of the Net takes into account the number of registrations here, not the turnover…
Eleventh at the end of May, Royal Enfield finished in the Top 10 of this first half of 2018 by overtaking Husqvarna in the sixth round: 1,079 immats for the Indian brand of English origin, against 1,067 for the Austrian brand (KTM group) of Swedish origin..
The Bullet 500 slightly increased its sales over the first six months (524 in 2018 against 488 in 2017). But it is the release of the Himalayan 410 which raises – again – Royal Enfield to the rank of major manufacturer with 514 registrations for the small trail at the end of the world.
Historic first on MNC: Indian is in the monthly Top 10 in June with 225 registrations! The Scout leads sales of customs over 1000 cc with 612 registrations, compared to 496 for the Forty-Eight, Harley-Davidson’s bestseller. !
Over the first six months of the year, the “other” manufacturers came close to 7,000 registrations, against just 5,500 over the same period in 2017 (+ 26.8%). We listed in order: 1067 Husqvarana (as we have seen), 956 Indian, 781 Piaggio / Vespa, 540 Kymco, 529 Aprilia, 500 Moto Guzzi, 410 Beta, 381 Benelli, 354 Sherco, 308 Mash, 232 Gas Gas , 173 Moto SPA, 115 Sym, 76 MV Agusta, 58 Montesa, 52 Motorbike, 50 TM, 49 TRS, 41 Ural, 40 Zero Motorcycle, etc.
