"On some circuits, the drivers have a lot of trouble seeing their sign and, make no mistake about it, some have trouble assimilating the information", explains Javier Alonso, member of the race management who is working on this project, to our Spanish colleagues from. "So we asked our IT engineers to see if it was possible to add channels to the system that the race management uses to communicate with the drivers, in order to make it available to the teams so that they can send information. Not just what is displayed on the panel but many more ". "Our races are sprinted, so the radio doesn’t make sense because it’s very expensive and could distract the drivers dangerously," said Alonso. "We want to increase the information they need and, above all, not be limited to displaying this data in a thousandth of a second, the time they have to see the panel. With this new system, pilots will have the ‘information more easily, in a more readable way, and it will be available for as long as they want because they can decide for themselves when to make it disappear from their screen ". |
The radio link used in F1 – and already tested without much success in MotoGP by the Roberts or Tech3 teams – seems to have been definitively ruled out for reasons of sound power in a particularly noisy environment (the MotoGP limit is set at 130 dB!) and safety related to pilot concentration.
But another solution could make it possible to reinforce – even, in the long term, to replace? – the traditional sign brandished somehow by a member of the team along the pit straight.
More complete and more readable information
The screens on the MotoGP dashboard can indeed already receive information in real time during the race, but only from the race management and only in four cases: fly start, red flag (interrupted race), flag black (pilot exclusion) and technical damage requiring the pilot to stop.
The idea currently developed by the managers of Dorna, promoter of the MotoGP world championship, would be to open this communication channel to the teams, so that they can directly contact their rider (see box above).
Probably more efficient than good old daddy’s paneling – hardly visible to pilots, fully loaded in the straight line with nose in the bubble! -, the screen could also broadcast more complete information than on the panel.
Another advantage: if they were broadcast on the video feed of the races (such as currently the percentages of acceleration, braking or cornering), this information would make the race even more alive for spectators: a non-commercial argument. negligible for the promoter.
One could even imagine that messages will be accompanied in the future by a color code, thanks to TFT matrices developed on smartphones and high-end motorcycles. Thus, Rossi could for example receive an info in red to warn him more comfortably of an info concerning a Ducati … like the one his current teammate Lorenzo will be driving next year. !
