MotoGP will not go to Finland or Mexico in 2019
IRTA, the association of motorcycle Grand Prix teams, reveals that the 2019 MotoGP lineup will not extend beyond the 19 circuits used this year. Announcement implies postponement of GP of Finland and ends rumors of possible race in Mexico next year. Explanations.
"19 events will be contested in 2019 and these will be the same as in 2018," revealed the IRTA, whose president is the team manager of Tech3, the French Herve Poncharal. The team association will disclose a provisional calendar for the next MotoGP race, the San Marino GP (Italy) from September 7 to 9.
- MNC of September 14, 2017 :
According to initial reports, the 2019 Grand Prix World Championship will begin on March 10 in Qatar at the Losail circuit, which traditionally marks the start of the MotoGP seasons with its night-time race. Like this year, the Continental Circus will then go to Argentina and then to the United States, before returning to Europe..
As IRTA confirms the same circuits for next year, the rest of the 2019 MotoGP lineup should be broadly similar, with a few exceptions of dates and circuit successions. This forward-looking organization implies three interesting consequences.
Finland and Mexico "out"
First of all, the MotoGP calendar will not expand to 20 dates in 2019 as was expected since summer 2017 with the introduction of the new KymiRing circuit in Finland. Work on this route, located around 100 kilometers from Helsinki, has been delayed, delaying the return of the Grands Prix to Finland for at least a year..

- MNC Live : Work begins on the track for the future Finnish Grand Prix
These difficulties in bringing this ambitious project to fruition are not surprising given the obstacles to be overcome, both technically and economically but above all meteorologically: it is not easy to build a MotoGP and F1 approved track in such a cold region, subject to harsh conditions. ” significant periods of frost which will put a severe test on the quality of the bitumen !
The lack of new appointments in 2019 also means that an additional Grand Prix in Mexico will not be introduced next year, as promoter Dorna envisioned during the. This new race was to be contested on the urban circuit of Hermanos Rodriguez, on which Formula 1 have been racing since 2015..
Problem: this track located in the heart of Mexico – like Monaco or Macau – does not meet the homologation criteria of MotoGP due to insufficient clearance and proximity to the walls … is considered too dangerous, especially by Valentino Rossi who strongly opposed the holding of a race in Mexico without major work.
Remember that MotoGP riders will already participate in one, on the circuit of Buriram. For some pilots like Crutchlow, Rossi or Espargaro, it is not reasonable to add one, or even two additional races, as Dorna wishes, who intends to grow her juicy business in other countries….
Germany: Sachsenring "in" !
Finally, last interesting information to deduce from the announcement of the IRTA: since all the current circuits are indeed renewed in 2019, the German GP will therefore continue to compete at the Sachsenring, despite the worrying signals sent by the owner from the circuit this summer.
Despite a very large crowd, the route of Saxony has in fact encountered difficulties in making ends meet for several years. The 2018 edition was no exception since the ADAC, the German federation which brings together car and motorcycle clubs, once again sounded the alarm when more than 90,000 spectators flocked to the day alone. of Sunday !
But, like every year, Dorna and the parties concerned have apparently reached an agreement to extend the visit of the Continental Circus to the Sachsenring, which has hosted the world championship since 1998. To believe that this is a well-oiled scenario: the organizers of the German GP announce the end of the event … before the latter is miraculously saved after application of a "miracle" recipe following several meetings !
The promoter of the Grands Prix has probably revised downwards the financial participation required of each country to organize a race, for lack of alternative solutions: the other circuits in Germany, such as the Nurburgring and Hockenheim, are not homologated for MotoGP. However, there is no question of doing without a race in such an important country for the organizer as for the manufacturers involved in MotoGP. !
