The Czech Republic Grand Prix 250 lap by lap
Reinforcing his status as favorite for the title, Marco Simoncelli approaches the resumption of the championship in the same way he left it in Germany: with authority and speed! But behind the Italian, Bautista, Debon, Kallio and Barbera are on the lookout !
With an advantage of eleven points on his Finnish rival Mika Kallio, Marco Simoncelli tumbles into the Czech Republic by conquering: benefiting from a Gilera "factory" from Germany, the n ° 58 shows speed and especially a formidable consistency.
Zoom on … |
Manuel Poggiali, who reconnects with his old demons: the former world champion is again forfeited in Brno for rather obscure reasons. Relatives of the pilot claim that his recent paternity does not facilitate his return to the highest level, because by the pilot’s own admission, the fear of falling – the instinct of conservation? – would prevent him from taking the handlebars of his machine. |
However, it is with a grain of salt that the young Italian will approach the first qualifying session for the Brno GP: the downpour that appeared during session 125 turned into a deluge and it was ultimately Hector Barbera who would set the best time. .. before going to the fault in these tricky conditions !
The Spaniard is seven tenth ahead of the Finnish Mika Kallio who is ahead of his rival for the title, Marco Simoncelli, Alex Debon and Hiroshi Aoyama. The next day on a wet track, Simoncelli will take all the risks to chase pole: the n ° 58 will even go so far as to leave the track without gravity, before setting off again with the knife between his teeth to get the best time. !
The championship leader is ahead of veteran Alex Debon, Hector Barbera, Mattia Pasini, Thomas Luthi, Julian Simon, Mika Kallio, Yuki Takahashi, Lucas Pesek, Alvaro Bautista, Alex Baldolini and Eugene Laverty on the line.
The race !
Departure : Marco Simoncelli is the quickest to release the clutch of his machine and turns at the head of this Brno Grand Prix! Thomas Luthi sticks to the train of the Italian and steals the leadership in favor of a gap of No. 58 out of the first right. Alex Debon and Yuki Takahashi contain the Finnish Mika Kallio, but the Japanese miss out on a left and must let the official KTM pass, then Pasini’s Aprilia RSA! Local Lucas Pesek ahead of Bautista and Aoyama.
Simoncelli gained the upper hand over the Swiss and immediately tried to widen a slight gap. Behind, Alvaro Bautista whips his official Aprilia and swerves inside a straight downhill: the smiling n ° 19 passes Takahashi – whose Honda is visibly suffering on the ultra-fast track in the Czech Republic – and immediately crunches the national driver of the test, Lucas Pesek.
2nd and 3rd rounds : Simoncelli was the first to cross the timing line ahead of the swift Thomas Luthi, Alex Debon, Mika Kallio and Mattia Pasini. Alvaro Bautista continues his effort to return and precedes in order Pesek, Aoyama, Barbera, Simon, Takahashi, Espargaro, Faubel and Locatelli.
Luthi tries to brake on the leader, but Simoncelli crushes his right grip at the very last moment and infiltrates the chicane under the nose and beard of the Swiss! Alex Debon appears a few lengths away from the two men, but it is especially Pasini and Bautista who were quickly taken down: the two talented pilots are already more than a second behind the leader! The other local driver, Karel Abraham, makes a mistake in front of his audience and must give up: sad outcome for the son of the owner of the circuit !
4th round : Marco Simoncelli is still a solid leader, but behind him a driver is sounding the charge: Alex Debon’s black Aprilia is literally melting down on Luthi’s who will, once again, have to deal with the tenacious Spanish! Mika Kallio is half a second, ahead of Bautista, Pasini and Barbera.
Aware of Debon’s comeback, Luthi gave everything to get back into contact with Simoncelli and try to overtake him: this did not work for the Swiss who was forced to generously widen at the end of a chicane. Alex Debon does not have time to infiltrate, but the n ° 12 felt the breath of his opponent on his back: the young Helvetian enters with optimism in a straight downhill, but his trajectory is too tight compared to its speed and there it is obliged to widen beyond the vibrator! Debon passes easily while Luthi struggles to try to get back on the track: unfortunately for him, an asphalt access appears perpendicular to the vibrator on which the pilot is rolling and the Aprilia loses the little grip it has. and fall !
5th and 6th rounds : Simoncelli, Debon and Kallio find themselves alone in the lead and against all expectations, it is the Finnish’s turn to set the fastest lap of the lap! Alvaro Bautista is almost two seconds from the KTM and continues his ascent in front of Barbera and a little further on Pasini, Aoyama, Pesek and Takahashi.
Alex Debon maintains constant pressure on the leader of the event, while Kallio no longer seems to be able to come back: losing the pace, the official KTM is slowly picked up by the Aprilia de Bautista.
7th and 8th laps : Fearsome under braking, Debon fully justifies Aprilia’s choice to entrust him with the reigning world champion machine: the 30-year-old Spaniard swerves at the end of the pit straight and passes Simoncelli from the inside! The Italian reacts quickly and tries to force from the outside, but a start of guidance of his Gilera at the start of the next curve urges him to stay in the wake of n ° 6 !
Alvaro Bautista once again sets the fastest lap in less than 2’03 and takes – about ten meters away – the obstinate Barbera. The two compatriots manage to grab several tenths per lap from Mika Kallio and should soon make the junction with the Finn. The KTMs are definitely under pressure on the fast Czech track, as Aoyama in turn is attacked – with success – by veteran Locatelli !
9th and 10th laps : Alex Debon leads the race just ahead of Marco Simoncelli, while Kallio is now under threat from Bautista. Barbera follows a little further, but his lap times suggest a possible return to the leading group. Alvaro Bautista takes the KTM suction on the straight and overtakes Kallio on braking from the first right.
Alex Debon adopts an overly protective trajectory entering the first chicane and the Spaniard does not manage to position himself well for the next right: Simoncelli – who has not lost a bit – throws himself under his wheels and resumes his first place at the end of the sequence! An overtaking which is timely for the Italian, because behind, Bautista turns faster than a quarter of a second! The n ° 19 is now corked by Debon and seeks the opening.
11th round : Marco Simoncelli is the first to cross the timing line, with Alex Debon and Alvaro Bautista in his wake. Mika Kallio is a bit far, but the Finn resists and is not yet completely off the hook. Hector Barbera continued his race alone, gaining and then losing ground on the KTM in front of him. Six seconds later, Mattia Pasini clings to her sixth place, ahead of Takahashi, Aoyama, Espargaro and Faubel.
Alex Debon tries an interior at the entrance of the chicane where he lost the lead of the race previously, but Simoncelli resists and Debon must give in, under penalty of being cut in two by the current leader of the championship! The veteran Spain continues his intimidation act until the last chicane of the Czech track, but the Gilera and his driver hold on !
12th and 13th rounds : The tenacious Iberian has not said his last word: playing on a par with his rival’s bike, the official Aprilia goes up the entire pit straight line stuck to the Simoncelli fairing and Debon manages to brake later and harder than his rival! Not wanting to concede anything to n ° 6, Simoncelli tries to resist from the outside, but his trajectory requires more speed than his rivals and Bautista takes the opportunity to tax him from the inside !
Off course, the n ° 58 wisely returns to the rope, just in time to prevent Kallio from stealing his place! The pilot manages to get back to Bautista: again (but in a different order!), The three pilots stand in a pocket square !
14th and 15th rounds : The race order does not change: Debon maintains his advantage over Bautista and Simoncelli, while a little further on Kallio observes the events. Follow Hector Barbera, Mattia Pasini, Yuki Takahashi, Hector Faubel, Aleix Espargaro and Roberto Locatelli.
For his 118th quarter-liter start, Alex Debon had a superb race: standing up to the big names in the category, the Spaniard demonstrated that his victory in the rain at Le Mans was not the only fact of the traction control Aprilia had. equips his bike, but also and above all with the talent of the tough pilot !
16th round : Alex Debon is still a solid leader, but we can feel Bautista pressing: the n ° 19 does not adopt the trajectories of his opponent and occasionally swerves to gauge him. Simoncelli is glued to the exhausts of the Spanish and everything suggests that he does not want to stop there either! And the hot Italian proves it with style: taking advantage of a slight hesitation from Bautista, Simoncelli literally dives under the wheels of his rival and takes second place. !
Behind the three men, Hector Barbera has finally managed to come back in contact with Kallio and the Aprilia with red polka dots is in turn insistent on the Finnish’s KTM !
17th and 18th laps : With four laps to go, the tone is set: Debon will have to sell his skin dearly against a wild Simoncelli and a Bautista in need of victory! The n ° 19 also brakes from the outside at the end of the pit straight line and recovers second place again. !
The battle between Barbera and Kallio continues to rage and the Spaniard tries an authoritarian interior on the Finn who can not respond! Here is Hector Barbera fourth, a handful of seconds from the leading men.
Marco Simoncelli in turn overtakes Alvaro Bautista who is forced to raise slightly under the attack of the Italian driver! This one rushes like an arrow in the right downhill where Luthi fell and like the Swiss (but to a lesser extent), must move out of the way! Alvaro Bautista immediately took the opportunity to try to squeeze inside, but the pilot Gilera returned to the second point of rope and failed to hit the front of his rival’s Aprilia !
19th round : Reassembled like never before, Simoncelli passed Debon in the first series of the circuit: the Spaniard fought to regain his leading position, but the Italian swift slammed all doors in his face !
Bautista passes his compatriot inside the left of the last chicane, but Alex Debon reacts and resists: the front wheel of his machine brushes the slider of his young opponent who is forced to widen somewhat! The two men tackle the pit straight side by side, each keen to win !
Last round : It is finally Debon and his Aprilia Lotus who win under braking while Barbera comes back hard on Bautista thanks to a hot lap! Alex Debon tries a final attack inside the first right of the last chicane and passes the front wheel in front of his rival’s fairing! Simoncelli resisted from the outside, but had to cut to tackle the last corner and Bautista took the opportunity to slip under the wheels of the Italian, depriving him of second place for a few centimeters on the line !
Magnificent victory for Alex Debon ahead of Bautista, Simoncelli, Barbera, Kallio, Takahashi, Pasini, Faubel, Locatelli and Espargaro !
In the championship, Marco Simoncelli nevertheless consolidates his lead over Mika Kallio, while Alex Debon and Alvaro Bautista stand by one point in third and fourth place! Hector Barbera is fifth overall with 54 points behind the leader and three points ahead of Pasini. Hiroshi Aoyama, Takahashi, Luthi and Simon complete the Top 10.
They are explained:
Alex Debon (1st) : "I think the race was interesting until the end. My team did a great job during practice and I knew we were able to get a good result. I knew Simoncelli would be very aggressive in T1, but I was able to close the gap in the other parts of the circuit. Thanks to Dani Amatriain, we received new coins for this weekend and we are back in the title race.".
Alvaro Bautista (2nd) : "it was a special race. I got off to a really bad start and the first lap was difficult. I had to push harder than the others to close the gap. I pushed as hard as I could to catch up with the leading group. I then reduced the pace to preserve my front tire, with which I had problems in braking and to overtake. It was a good fight and I finished second. I’m satisfied, but with two laps to go I hit Debon and lost some ground without being able to come back. I thought I could fight for victory without it".
Marco Simoncelli (3rd) : "I’m happy to have extended the gap between Kallio and me. Happy with the result of the race, but disappointed to have led so long to lose two corners from the finish line. I was hoping to win. I’m happy but a little disappointed".
