The Grand Prix of San Marino 125 lap by lap
Particularly awaited meeting of the season, the San Marino GP is one of all dangers for the leader Mike di Meglio: Simone Corsi, direct rival for the title, is at home while Gabor Talmacsi appears in great shape. Round by round !
Really back to business for a few races, the title holder 125, Gabor Talmacsi, opens hostilities on the first day of testing: the team driver Bancaja Aspar was clocked in 1’44.172, beating the rookie Scott Redding.
Mike di Meglio is however not far behind the two men and if the tension begins to be felt between the current leader of the championship and Talmacsi, the Toulouse driver continues to impress with his consistency. Bradley Smith fails just behind the French, ahead of Terol, Cortese and Bradl.
Gabor Talmacsi continued to make the powder speak the next day and signed his third pole position in a row! Behind him on the first row are three drivers under 18: Bradley Smith, Pol Espargaro and Scott Redding! Simone Corsi and Mike di Meglio qualified fourth and fifth ahead of Cortese and Marquez. Jules Cluzel is 24th, Alexis Masbou 29th and Louis Rossi 33rd.
The race !
Departure : Excellent take-off for Englishman Bradley Smith ahead of Gabor Talmacsi, Nicolas Terol and Pol Espargaro. The current reigning world champion sneaks under the wheels of his rival’s Aprilia and appears in first position at the end of the first sequence !
Simone Corsi is 6th in her home race, while Mike di Meglio is stuck in the peloton of 39 (!) Participants and only ranks 13th in the first partial. The Frenchman’s comeback promises to be tricky, especially as his opponents do not give him any gift on the track to try to destabilize the leader of the championship..
2nd and 3rd rounds : Gabor Talmacsi crosses the pit straight line with a slight lead over Bradley Smith and Nicolas Terol. Pol Espargaro follows a little further ahead of Marc Marquez, Simone Corsi, Stefan Bradl, Scott Redding and Mike di Meglio’s teammate, Dominique Aegerter. The Toulouse driver is in 11th place and slowly returns to Cortese who precedes him. Jules Cluzel is 22nd, Louis Rossi 33rd, while Alexis Masbou seems in distress at the 35th position.
Official KTM rider Randy Krumenacher was forced to retire due to technical problems. Simone Corsi defeats Marquez and Olive in turn and is now behind her teammate Terol. Scott Redding’s big slip: the pilot gets up unscathed, but will not be able to leave. Stefan Bradl comes back hard on Marquez and Espargaro, taking Mike di Meglio in his wake: the two pilots overtake the unfortunate Marquez wheel to wheel, then Bradl brakes on Espargaro at the end of the straight line! Nice comeback from Jules Cluzel, who now appears in 19th place, despite clearly declining equipment.
4th round : Mike di Meglio shifts at the entrance to a fast left and taxes the Derbi d’Espargaro on braking! Marquez takes the opportunity to sneak in after him and also passes the Spanish from the inside! Bradl is now 4th after getting rid of Corsi: the German definitely enters the closed circle of the category leaders, following his victory in Brno !
5th and 6th rounds : Gabor Talmacsi sets the fastest lap in the race and consolidates his lead over Smith. The two men are almost three seconds ahead of Terol, Bradl, Corsi, Di Meglio, Espargaro, Marquez, Iannone and Cortese. The n ° 63 shifts around a fast left and passes his opponent in the championship under braking! Simone Corsi does not let it be fooled and immediately titillates Mike di Meglio to try to regain the advantage.
The Italian does not hesitate to dive under the wheels of the Derbi of the French pilot, who finds himself forced to leave its path to let the n ° 24 pass! The two pilots are doing each other no favors! Mike regains the advantage just before the chicane that determines the pit line: it’s boiling hot on the track !
Iannone gets the better of Marquez with an unstoppable interior, while the fight continues just ahead. But all these maneuvers precipitated the take-off of the two leading men: Nicolas Terol was unable to keep pace with Talmacsi and Smith and lost nearly a second in this lap! Unleashed in front of his audience, Simone Corsi literally pushes Mike di Meglio to pass him and performs the same maneuver a few turns later on his own teammate! He and Bradl are now in third and fourth place, far behind Smith and Talmacsi.
Di Meglio does not give up and immediately overtakes Terol under braking: the French tries several times to intimidate Corsi, but the guy defends himself !
7th round : Talmacsi masterfully leads this Misano race ahead of Smith, Bradl, Corsi, Di Meglio, Terol, Iannone, Espargaro and Marquez. Jules Cluzel has gained two more places and now ranks 17th! Di Meglio makes himself pressing behind Corsi and passes him to the fast left braking where he seems very comfortable !
Corsi immediately replied by attempting a more than limited attack from the inside: Mike was obliged to raise copiously to let his opponent pass, who by his poorly chosen trajectory also hampered the two pilots in passing the curve! Iannone and Terol take the opportunity to overtake them! Certainly furious to be manhandled in this way, the n ° 63 quickly manages to get the best of Iannone and points in the exhaust of Corsi! Alexis Masbou gives up and brings his Loncin back to the pits…
Iannone takes advantage of a slight gap in Di Meglio’s Derbi to slip inside near the last chicane! Mike has to fight by staying focused, but he also has to think about his situation in the championship…
8th and 9th rounds : Talmacsi is on the heels of young English hopeful Bradley Smith and it now seems inevitable that victory will be played between the two men! Bradl appeared almost six seconds behind the two men, ahead of the group of Corsi, Iannone, Terol and di Meglio by a short head..
The Toulouse player recovers fifth place by getting rid of Iannone and Terol, then Corsi and his rival wheel to wheel again! Di Meglio tries the outside braking from the pit straight line, but it’s his turn to get carried away a little and he has to straighten up to avoid hitting Corsi! Conscientiously, the Toulouse driver will take back his opponent’s wake to better outflank him in the second part of the circuit thanks to an irreproachable interior! Here is the n ° 63 at the door of the podium, just behind Bradl !
10th round : Gabor Talmacsi still contains Smith and the lap times of the two opponents already place them more than six seconds behind Bradl and di Meglio! Corsi matures his revenge in ambush behind the French, while Terol and Iannone exchange sixth place over the laps! Mike di Meglio finally gets rid of Stefan Bradl and now appears in third position! Catching up with the two leaders seems impractical, but finishing the race in this place would be an excellent accounting operation in the championship. !
Simone Corsi reacts immediately and overtakes Bradl when braking from a left: the Italian certainly does not want to let his rival slip away for the title! The n ° 24 tries again a desperate attack on the Frenchman and pushes the Derbi of Di Meglio to infiltrate inside! For two races now, all of Mike’s opponents have been heckling him to try to make him make mistakes in the race and try to reduce the French lead in the championship: the pressure must be formidable for the n ° 63 !
11th round : The leading men are clearly detached from Simone Corsi and Mike di Meglio, while Bradl contains Terol, Marquez, Iannone and Olive. Deconcentrated, Mike di Meglio loses a place to Stefan Bradl, while Smith takes the lead following a mistake by Gabor Talmacsi: the Hungarian’s motorcycle dribbles copiously after a downshift a little too deep entering a long left and English takes the opportunity to pass it !
12th and 13th rounds : Bradley Smith passes the timing line for the first time in front, ahead of Gabor Talmacsi and a little further Mike di Meglio and Simone Corsi who are fighting like ragpickers! Bradl and Olive are in ambush just behind the two men! Abandonment of Pol Espargaro.
Bradley Smith tries to escape, but Gabor Talmacsi sets the fastest lap in the race and sticks to his rival’s exhaust! Joan Olive overtakes Stefan Bradl and takes fifth place behind Corsi and di Meglio.
14th and 15th rounds : Mike di Meglio and Simone Corsi cross the straight line of the pits wheel to wheel, but the Italian cannot attack the French under braking. Under pressure, it engages in the first right like an arrow and must do violence to engage its Derbi in the left which immediately looms: the rear of the machine loses grip and it is the fall for French Mike di Meglio !
The n ° 63 is inconsolable in the gravel, aware of his blunder and the shortfall in terms of points in the championship: fortunately the French had a solid lead when he arrived in Italy !
"I took a bump in the angle change and fell", confides the new French star,"I really gave the maximum, because Corsi did anything and everyone came back to us. I am very disappointed, even if I remain leader of the championship, and I want to apologize to my team who had once again done a wonderful job.".
Gabor Talmacsi passes Bradley Smith, confirming for a few GPs the feeling of a return to the top of his form: the Hungarian wins over the English thanks to a formidable interior! Stefan Bradl appears in the low side and is forced to retire on a probable technical problem !
16th and 17th rounds : Illico the n ° 1 signs the lap record and sticks half a second to his pursuer! Without race facts, it is hard to imagine that the 700th Italian GP victories will occur in 125 today! Joan Olive returns from the devil vauvert and surprises Corsi from the inside with a quick right !
Talmacsi has irreparably let go of Bradley Smith who himself has almost nine seconds ahead of Olive and Corsi! Terol and Marquez are also off the hook and are four seconds behind the two pilots in front of them..
18th and 19th laps : Gabor Talmacsi literally stuns the competition by turning half a second faster than Bradley Smith! Olive and Corsi fight like ragpickers far behind, ahead of Terol and Marquez, Rabat, Iannone, Cortese and Aegerter.
Gabor Talmacsi now has 1.381 seconds ahead of Bradley Smith who seems to have given up in front of his opponent’s end-of-race pace. Simone Corsi tries to put pressure on Joan Olive who does not give in an inch !
20th and 21st round : The leading order does not change, while Iannone taxes Rabat on braking and is now fighting with Marquez. Cortese and Rabat find themselves in a fight and the two pilots do not spare each other !
Last round : Gabor Talmacsi approaches the last lap with a comfortable lead over Bradley Smith, himself safe from a hypothetical return of Olive or Corsi. The two pilots are side by side and we can feel the n ° 24 pressing behind Joan Olive’s official Derbi! This one misses at the entrance of the last chicane and Corsi takes the opportunity to infiltrate !
Olive fights and stays outside the driver and is in a bad position to tackle the last turn of the track: badly rewarded for his fantastic comeback, the Spaniard tries everything for everything and … loses the front of his motorcycle trying to overtake Corsi from the inside !
Gabor Talmacsi logically wins ahead of Bradley Smith and Simone Corsi who will have cracked two of his opponents! Marc Marquez is fourth ahead of Terol, Iannone, Cortese, Aegerter, Rabat and Gadea. Jules Cluzel finished the race at the gate of points, while Louis Rossi appeared in 23rd place.
The n ° 1 made a good operation in the general classification and returned to 39 points of Mike di Meglio who remains at the head of the classification with 28 points ahead of Simone Corsi. Stefan Bradl remains fourth despite his fall, ahead of Joan Olive, Nicolas Terol, Bradley Smith, Sandro Cortese, Pol Espargaro and Andrea Iannone.
They are explained:
Gabor Talmacsi (1st) : "I missed a speed. Normally I pass this turn in second, but today I had a hard time concentrating because of the heat. I slipped a bit because of that. I then tried to catch up with Bradley by being as fast as the rest of the weekend".
Bradley Smith (2nd) : "Gabor was quick from the start of the weekend. Everyone expected it, but I was surprised by the pace at the end of the race. I thought the tires would be worn out. This second place is for my team, they worked very hard here for their home race"
Simone Corsi (3rd) : "The race was magnificent. Very amusing. Gabor was very quick and got away, and he was too strong to be caught. I had a good fight with Mike di Meglio, then with Joan Olive on the last lap. It’s an important race for the championship and I’m confident for the rest of the season".
