The Valencia Grand Prix 125 lap by lap
Coming together in the last race of the season, Talmacsi and Corsi are aiming for the win to snatch the place of vice-world champion. Motivated, the drivers will not give each other any favors on the tortuous track of Valence ! Round by round !
Surprisingly cold and capricious, the Iberian weather did not reserve a very warm welcome to the 35 drivers in the eighth-liter category! On this narrow and slow track – the slowest after Barcelona – the agility of the 125 compensates for their low power and allows to witness breathless races and numerous fights. !
Savoring his title of world champion, Mike di Meglio approaches this final race with the desire to strike hard to seduce a little more a team 250 for 2009! And it seems that the talent of Toulouse and his pugnacity seduced the renowned team manager Jorge Aspar Martinez! If Mike could not yet say anything, the possibility of seeing him riding in the most prestigious team of the quarter liter category on the handlebars of an official Aprilia seems very real! A great reward for French !
Disturbed by the changes in track conditions, Mike will nevertheless appear in difficulty during practice (11th on Friday) and will start from the second row on Sunday after an average qualifying session. Gabor Talmacsi takes his second pole in Valencia ahead of Sergio Gadea, Simone Corsi, Nico Terol, Bradley Smith and Stevie Bonsey. The session will be marked by the heavy fall of Pol Espargaro, evacuated immediately to the hospital.
The race !
Departure : Gabor Talmacsi manages to take the first corner in front of the peloton, despite a rather eventful start and the pressure from Nico Terol. Sergio Gadea is fondly remembered by his home race and precedes Simone Corsi, Bradley Smith, Mike di Meglio, Stefan Bradl, and Stevie Bonsey.
Quickly "Magic Mike" manages to get rid of Bradley Smith and the Frenchman immediately assaulted the leading group which has already forged a slight lead..
2nd round : Gabor Talmacsi tackles the pit straight line elbow to elbow with Nico Terol who manages to pass the Hungarian before braking! Emerging from the devil vauvert, Sergio Gadea passes the two drivers under braking and rushes into the first left at the head of the race, while Corsi in turn passes Talmacsi !
Transcended, Corsi is up to his teammate in a left, while the latter was deported to pass Gadea! Elbowing, the Italian manages to turn in the lead, relegating Terol to second position ahead of Gadea, Talmacsi and di Meglio! Quickly Terol decides to give back the change of his coin to Corsi and the Spaniard manages to rush under the Corsi fairing which resists throughout the turn and finally manages to take his place. !
Just behind, Mike di Meglio dives under the wheels of Gabor Talmacsi in a fast right and here is the Toulouse fourth! The ex world champion seems in trouble with his official Aprilia and as he turns to his exhaust, Stefan Bradl passes him with ease.
3rd round : Approaching the last left fairing against fairing, Simone Corsi and Nico Terol fight throughout the pit straight and the n ° 18 manages to win with a short header! Once again the fastest in pure speed, Sergio Gadea once again manages to pass the two drivers under braking, while Stefan Bradl does the same with Mike di Meglio.
Sergio Gadea misses the chord point two turns further and Nico Terol immediately takes the opportunity to overtake him and take the lead of the race! Mike di Meglio tries to retaliate on Stefan Bradl, but the young German is selling his skin dearly! Jules Cluzel is 27th, while Louis Rossi – who has taken back his place in the federation team to replace the unfortunate Cyril Carrillo injured in Sepang – is in 36th position.
Aggressive, Simone Corsi turns around Gadea and finally manages to pass it in favor of an authoritarian interior in a right: the Italian will briefly raise his arm to Gadea’s attention to apologize for the brutality of his maneuver! The unfortunate pilot will hardly have time to react: entering like a cannonball in a fast right, Bradl loses control of his motorcycle and falls violently, dragging the Aspar pilot who cannot avoid him. The two pilots get up unscathed, but Gadea is naturally mad with rage !
4th and 5th rounds : Simone Corsi managed to regain the leadership of the event in Terol, while the collective fall blew up the order of the next group. Sandro Cortese appears in third position ahead of Mike di Meglio, Andrea Iannone, Bradley Smith and Gabor Talmacsi who continues to downgrade.
The two Jack and Jones pilots are now 1.3 seconds ahead of Cortese who is picked up by di Meglio, while Smith and Iannone do not seem able to keep pace with the new world champion. Talmacsi appears in 8th position and his machine seems to cut every now and then in the curves.
Alexis Masbou had a good race and his Loncin was in 18th position behind Vasquez and Jerez. Jules Cluzel is not far behind and the French are fighting with Webb and Krumenacher around the 20th place. The fastest driver on the track, Mike di Meglio gets rid of Sandro Cortese thanks to a perfectly executed interior in the last corners.
6th, 7th and 8th laps : Simone Corsi still contains Nico Terol, while Mike di Meglio gradually returns to the two leading men. Forcing admiration, the Frenchman manages to reduce the gap of one second that separates him from Terol and in just two laps, here is the Toulouse in the wake of the Spanish !
Sandro Cortese took the opportunity to hang on to the Derbi and in turn join the riders in the lead, while Bradley Smith appears unhooked and Talmacsi struggling with his rivals, but also with his motorcycle! Fall of Danny Webb who manages to get up.
Confirming the fears of his entire team, Gabor Talmacsi makes a mistake – because of a technical problem? – and he was forced to retire, at the same time jeopardizing his chances of defending his second place overall against a Corsi who continued to lead the race.
9th and 10th laps : Mike di Meglio manages to climb up to Terol in the straight line of the pits and passes the Spanish braking on the first left! The Frenchman is now second behind his rival for the entire season: Simone Corsi! Raffaele de Rosa also makes a mistake and manages to get up.
Simone Corsi was the first to pass the timing cell ahead of Mike di Meglio, Nico Terol and Sandro Cortese. Bradley Smith tries to keep in touch as best he can, while Bonsey is already more than three seconds from English! Andrea Iannone is 7th, 1.2 seconds behind Stevie Bonsey.
As Bradley Smith gradually returns to his two rivals, Sandro Cortese threatens Terol and overtakes him under braking from the pit straight !
11th and 12th rounds : Comfortable behind Corsi for a few laps, Mike di Meglio attacks the Italian at the end of the pit straight line and takes the lead in the race for the first time since the start! Little by little Sandro Cortese manages to get back on the two leading men, taking Terol in his wake, then Smith a little further..
At the same place where he has just lost the leadership of the event, Simone Corsi passes Mike di Meglio who nevertheless resists until the end of the first long left turn !
13th and 14th laps : The revenge of the French will not be long in coming and with the same braking at the end of the straight line, the n ° 63 takes the lead again! Corsi finds himself under the threat of Cortese who is now in contact and Terol who does not miss a beat. Bradley Smith could not keep pace with the two men and is 1.34 seconds behind Terol, while Stevie Bonsey is more than 4 seconds behind the Englishman.
Mike di Meglio manages to keep his position, but Corsi is on the lookout just behind: the French will pay the price, after a slight error entering a right where the Italian will immediately pass him inside !
15th and 16th rounds : Attempting to respond immediately, Mike di Meglio will however have to wait for the braking of the pit straight line to seize first position again! At the same time, Nico Terol performs the same maneuver on Sandro Cortese who cannot reply. !
Simone Corsi does not let it be told for long, however, and after following Mike for several laps, the Italian has put his finger on a turn where Mike seems less comfortable. Taking advantage of this, n ° 24 overtakes the French Derbi thanks to a very nice interior in this fast right. Betrayed by the mechanics of his official Derbi, Joan Olive is forced to retire in front of all his fans, while the young American driver Stevie Bonsey makes a mistake.
Mike di Meglio once again takes first place in Corsi thanks to the braking of the pit straight line and the Italian’s own teammate tries to get up to Corsi on the edge of the first curve! This does not work for Terol who however shows a beautiful aggressiveness for his national race.
Annoyed to be titillated on all sides, Corsi tries a daring interior on Di Meglio in a right and manages to pass the Toulouse cleanly !
17th and 18th laps : This one will conscientiously take the suction of his rival in the straight line and manages to overtake Corsi without incident before braking the first right. Nico Terol is hanging on his teammate’s seat backrest, while Cortese is only a breath away and Smith has managed to put the group back together.
While Simone Corsi seeks the opening on his rival, Terol takes advantage of a hesitant entry into a curve by his leader in a left to sneak inside! But Corsi doesn’t hear it that way and he dives under his teammate’s fairing in the last corner and he doesn’t hesitate to push him out to pass !
Nico Terol finds himself on the vibrator and this poor positioning does not allow him to accelerate correctly at the start of the straight line and Cortese takes the opportunity to pass him before the first braking. Nico Terol replied two corners further and rushed inside on a tight left, but the Spaniard had too much angle and his maneuver slowed the two protagonists in the curve. Bradley Smith takes the opportunity to tax the two men from the inside !
Simone Corsi passed Mike di Meglio four turns before the end of the lap thanks to an unstoppable interior.
19th and 20th laps : The two men begin the loop wheel to wheel, while Smith still contains Terol and Cortese 1.2 seconds behind the leaders. Andrea Iannone is already 12 seconds behind the leader, despite his 6th place. Pablo Nieto is currently 9th for his last participation in competition.
While Bradley Smith gently returns to Di Meglio and Corsi, the Toulouse driver once again overtakes Simone Corsi when braking the first curve. Very good performance from Alexis Masbou who climbed to 13th place with his Loncin! His teammate Jules Cluzel is 19th.
Nico Terol manages to get rid of Bradley Smith, as Cortese appears slightly off the hook.
21st and 22nd laps : Simone Corsi doubles Mike di Meglio at the end of the pit straight, but the Italian has picked up too much speed and he is badly placed to tackle the second left of the layout: the world champion immediately takes the opportunity to s’ infiltrate and take back control of the race !
Nico Terol is now at the height of his teammate, while Bradley Smith and Cortese are only a few lengths away. Mike di Meglio is careful to close all the doors, in this penultimate lap, but the Frenchman momentarily loses the front in a fast left and he has to widen so as not to fall !
Simone Corsi wastes no time analyzing the situation and rushes into the breach, followed by Nico Terol.
Last round : Simone Corsi starts this last loop in the lead, ahead of Terol who is careful to close all the doors to a Mike di Meglio certainly cooled by his mishap. The Toulouse driver tries to take Terol’s aspiration at the end of the last curve, but the checkered flag is too close and the Frenchman finishes third in this ultimate – and magnificent – race. !
Mike precedes Bradley Smith, Sandro Cortese, Andrea Iannone, Tomoyoshi Koyama, Scott Redding, Pablo Nieto, Esteve Rabat, Lorenzo Zanetti, Efren Vasquez, Lorenzo Savadori and Alexis Masbou who secures an encouraging 14th position. Jules Cluzel finished 19th, while Louis Rossi recovered well at the end of the race and finished 23rd.
In the world championship, Mike increased his lead over Corsi to 39 points, while Gabor Talmacsi failed in third place. Stefan Bradl is fourth ahead, Terol, Smith, Olive, Cortese, Espargaro, Iannone, Redding, Gadea, Marquez, Rabat, Bonsey, Aegerter, Koyama, de Rosa, Webb, Vasquez, Nieto and Zanetti. Alexis Masbou concludes his first season on the Loncin at a modest 28th position.
They are explained:
Simone Corsi (1st) : "It was a great battle, and I had a lot of fun fighting Di Meglio, he’s the World Champion, so it’s always fun. I am very happy to win the last race of the year, and to take second place overall. The double is great for the team. I was able to take the advantage when Mike made a mistake on the penultimate lap"
Nico Terol (2nd) : "I am very happy. Second at home for the last race of the year is a fantastic result. Mike and Simone were going very fast, and I almost ran into Simone before I found myself in the grass, which wasted time. I am satisfied with all the work done with the team, the race was excellent and it is a step forward for me this season."
Mike di Meglio (3rd) : "I had some problems during testing which I tried to resolve. I still had too much weight on the front during the race. I tried not to fall, but Simone and Terol walked past. It was a little too late to return. I want to thank my team for their work, because everything went well"
