Victim of a slip in the 12th lap of the race after biting on the grass, the Japanese hope was hit at full speed by the motorcycles of Alex De Angelis and Scott Redding, who have nothing could do to avoid it. Only 19 years old, the young pilot of the Franco-Swiss Technomag-CIP team, led by Frenchman Alain Bronec, died at 2:20 p.m. from multiple head, thoracic and abdominal trauma. This is the second death in a week after the disappearance of young Peter Lenz, 13, last weekend during the Moriwaki Cup warm up on the sidelines of the Indianapolis Grand Prix (read).
Almost unknown to the public – even informed – Tomizawa will be forever remembered as the first winner of the very first Moto2 race in Qatar (read). Second place in Jerez three weeks later, he then slows down.
Site had not yet had the opportunity to meet him, but during a press presentation at the start of the year, the famous French MotoGP photographer Stan Perec assured us of the great "sympathy" of this young Japanese. "He is very nice, really", Stan Perec explained to us:"very pleasant, always in a good mood and smiling. He reminds me of Shinya Nakano"…
This tragic disappearance, which brutally recalls the risks inherent in motorcycles in general and in competition in particular, also highlights the difficult conditions of this new Moto2 category, with a particularly extensive starting grid and very numerous riders at the start but less at the finish, a mixed level of driving and tires not always very competitive…

Dani Pedrosa
"There are no words to describe how I feel after this victory. I arrived at the parc ferme very happy to have won but immediately felt that the atmosphere among my mechanics was very strange, everyone looked serious. I still had my helmet on my head when they told me about Tomizawa and I couldn’t react. It was a huge shock, a big contrast for me. I asked three times if it was true because I couldn’t believe it. It’s so sad, horrible, and things like that should never happen. As a person, I can only say that he was a very funny boy, always happy and joking, and as a pilot he had earned everyone’s respect in a very short period of time he was brave and quick. Losing two pilots in a week is terrible. I think everyone feels the same at the world championship and I extend my condolences to the family. At birth, life gives us the opportunity to choose what we want to do. Tomi had chosen to be a motorcycle rider and he was doing very well. I just wanna think he was happy to make his dream come true".
Jorge Lorenzo
"It’s a very sad day and a huge pain because Shoya was a good guy and a great pilot. I am very sad and just want to send my support to his family and friends. Faced with this kind of event, nothing else matters".
Valentino rossi
"When something so sad happens, everything else is reset and the results don’t matter. I am sad for Shoya because he was an excellent pilot but above all he was very friendly. He was very funny, always smiling and he always had a kind word for everyone. He was also very young with a great career ahead of him so we are all very sad".
Andrea Dovizioso
"My thoughts are with Shoya Tomizawa. I learned it after the race and it was like a slap in the face. Two tragic accidents in two races, it’s terrible and it reminds us how dangerous our job is. The Safety Commission has improved the racing conditions so much that this aspect is often overlooked. I’m sorry for Tomizawa’s family. As a father, I can understand that this is the worst thing that can happen to a family. Unfortunately, nothing could be done about it: there were two victims, two accidents with a similar dynamic where the barriers on the ground were not touched. It can happen and that’s why our job is so risky".
Ben spies
"I want to express my sadness after the disappearance of Shoya Tomizawa. My thoughts are with his family and friends. It’s a sad loss again for our sport".
Colin edwards
"The race does not count any more when one learns of the death of Tomizawa. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time".
Randy de Puniet
"I don’t want to talk about myself or the race at all. This weekend ends in drama and my thoughts go straight to Shoya and his loved ones".
Toni Elias
"All I feel is sadness and my victory today doesn’t count. Just yesterday I was joking with Tomizawa at the Mobile Clinic and the thought that he is no longer with us is truly excruciating. And even today we were there racing together and he was in front of me before this incredible tragedy. He left an indelible mark on my life".
Tatsuya Yamaguchi
"I have a lot of sadness in my heart, that’s the only thing I can say"…
Marco melandri
"I have nothing to say about today’s race. It’s a tragic day".
Marco simoncelli
"Not much to say, it’s a tough day and the race doesn’t count. Two tragedies in a week is too much. Last Sunday it was a boy of just 13 years old and today Tomizawa, only 19 years old. Unfortunately this is the risk of motorcycle racing but when it happens it’s just terrible".
Alvaro Bautista
"I was happy at the end of the race, then I learned of Tomizawa’s death and I’m really sad for him and his family. It’s a very difficult day for all the pilots. I’m sure he’ll stay with us and hope he’s in a better world now".
Loris Capirossi
"I have to have surgery and hope to be back for Aragon, but it’s nothing compared to what happened in the other race. I want to send my condolences to Tomizawa’s family, this is a great tragedy and it’s something you never like to hear".
Aleix Espargarò
"There is nothing to be said in such circumstances. A member of our family is gone".
Mika kallio
"It’s a sad day for everyone".
Valentin Debise
"My pain is immense. Far beyond an opponent, I lose a former teammate, an accomplice, a great friend who is 19 years old just like me".
Shuhei Nakamoto (Vice President Honda Racing Corporation)
"We are very saddened by this news and of course our hearts go out to Shoya’s family and friends. He was at the start of his Grand Prix career and today we have lost a very good young driver and talent for the future. Shoya was competitive, he will be sorely missed"…
Fausto Gresini (Gresini Racing team manager)
"Today is a very sad and very hard day, the race is not what it should be. I know how hard it is to lose a pilot under these circumstances, I know the pain of the family and everyone who worked with him. There is not much else to say, it is an extremely sad day. We knew straight away that the accident was serious but we always hope, at times like this, that there will be a miracle and that the driver will get up. Unfortunately, this is not the case today".
Herve Poncharal (Tech3 team manager)
"On behalf of the Tech 3 Yamaha team, I want to extend my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Shoya Tomizawa. He was a huge talent and a very nice boy who will be missed by everyone in the motorcycle sport community. He was a very pleasant character and a great hope for the future. He was already someone who was part of our world. Everyone adored him and we all feel devastated by what happened".
Toshiyuki Yamaji (Repsol Honda team manager)
"Dani and Andrea did a good job today, but the result is completely insignificant compared to the events of the Moto2 race. The hearts of everyone on the team and at Honda are with the family of Shoya Tomizawa. May he rest in peace".
Davide Brivio (Fiat Yamaha team manager)
"It is a very sad day for our sport, our thoughts are with Tomi, his friends, family and team. He was a very good person".
Vito Ippolito, President of the FIM
"We are extremely touched by the death of Shoya Tomisawa, an endearing and talented runner with a promising future, who reminds us that our sport, despite the very low number of fatal accidents in recent years, is not without risks for its practitioners. The FIM and Dorna, together with all the protagonists of motorcycling, have worked enormously in recent years to improve active and passive safety so that the circuits and facilities used for the practice of our sport reach a level of safety. as high as possible. I was in contact with the race director to understand the circumstances of the accident and I know that everything that could be done was actually done to save the life of this rider. However, the dynamics of accidents that take place in our sport are often unpredictable. We need to continue our research and analysis to minimize them. In these difficult times that mourn our sport, I would like to reiterate my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Shoya Tomisawa as well as to the Japanese Federation.".
