Nearly 400,000 visitors to the 2018 Paris Motorcycle Show
Nearly 400,000 visitors went to Hall 3 reserved for motorcycles at the Paris Motor Show 2018. This record attendance exceeds all the expectations of the participating manufacturers, who are delighted with this success linked to the merger with the Mondial de l’Auto.. Explanations.
The organizer of the Paris Motor Show has a smile when it comes to taking stock of the 2018 edition: questioned by MNC, AMC Promotion counts precisely "1,068,194 visitors" over the eleven days opening to the public (from October 4 to 14), to which can be added two additional days reserved for the press and professionals.

In 2016, the last edition of the Mondial de l’Auto attracted 1,072,697 visitors, or 4,503 more. But its programming was spread over five additional days (16) and included three weekends against two this year. Daily attendance has therefore skyrocketed, proving absent car manufacturers such as Volkswagen, Fiat, Ford or even Nissan, yet a subsidiary of Renault, wrong. !
1,068,194 visitors
"We are very happy with this edition, both in terms of attendance and the success of new initiatives and the good general atmosphere which reigned", rejoices Laure de Verdun, communications manager at AMC Promotion, before indicate to the Journal moto du Net that the visitors were "delighted to be able to discover the motorcycle in addition to the car".
Because one of the levers operated to improve the attractiveness of the Mondial de Paris consisted of bringing together two-wheelers and four-wheelers, a common format already adopted in the past and then abandoned in 1986. This "double poster" allows visitors to ” get more for their money, in addition to opening up interesting prospects for transfers from one universe to another.
The argument is especially valid for the motorcycle part, where most manufacturers met with the exception of BMW (present only on its car stand), Ducati (present only through its Scrambler brand) or the Piaggio and MV group. Agusta (absent). The objective was to capture part of the large flow of motorists to reverse a worrying trend: the erosion of attendance at the Mondial de la Moto (167,000 visitors in 2015 and 180,000 in 2013).

"We know that there are about 2 million" dormant permits "in France, people holding permit A but who do not practice motorcycles due to lack of time or resources: these are among others the people we were targeting when we have decided to return to this auto-motorcycle format ", enlightens us, president of the motorcycle branch of the International Automobile and Motorcycle Union Chamber (CSIAM).
"Between 390,000 and 395,000 visitors in the Motorcycle Hall"
If the reasoning does indeed present favorable arguments, it remained to measure the real realization of this famous "runoff" from the car to the motorbike, two specific universes with totally different requirements and modes of consumption..
In addition, bringing them together ran the risk that the Mondial Auto would suffocate the Mondial Moto, much less visible in the general media: MNC was able to see this when he came to discover the cars … and who was totally unaware of the presence of a reserved hall on the motorcycle !
- MNC of October 4 :
The results are finally excellent since "between 390,000 and 395,000 visitors" went to the pavilion reserved for motorcycles, reveals us with Jean-Luc Mars with undisguised satisfaction. "It is very, very above our highest forecasts", indicates the director of the French subsidiary of Triumph.
It should be noted that this is not a rough estimate – demonstration style – but a physical accounting carried out using sensors placed at the entrance to Hall 3 by the Parisian company, "a start- up specializing in the measurement of traffic during events ", explains Jean-Luc Mars to Site.
"A surprising result in a good sense"
"All the manufacturers present are unanimously satisfied and are delighted to have been able to observe a high, dense and qualitative attendance", he continues after consulting most of the exhibitors before giving us his analysis the day after the closure of "Mondial Paris Motor Show ", new name for the Paris Motor Show.
By his own admission, having come close to the 400,000 visitors mark is a "surprising result, in a good sense": attendance is multiplied by 2.3 compared to the previous Mondial de la Moto, which however lasted five days less than this year (6 days Vs 11). Jean-Luc Mars and the other motorcycle manufacturers did not expect so much !
"This level of attendance greatly exceeds that of Intermot in Cologne", welcomes the French leader, who like many feared head-on competition with the important German show placed exactly on the same dates as the Paris show..

His fears were swept away by the results: well helped by the car, the Parisian event outclassed its rival from beyond the Rhine and its 220,000 visitors over five days! Better: Paris is placed at the aspiration of the EICMA of Milan (Italy), "heavyweight" of motorcycle shows with more in a week !
Another reason for satisfaction is the diversity of visitor profiles, which tends to demonstrate the value of associating cars and motorcycles at the Parc des Expositions. "Young and old, women, men, families: this edition went beyond our traditional clientele made up of enthusiasts", rejoices the president of CSIAM..
"This pleasant observation reminds us that motorcycles affect all age groups and all socio-professional categories, that it is quite simply a means of transport for the general public", considers Jean-Luc Mars, delighted to have seen many "youngsters" take selfies on their motorcycles and those of their competitors !
Youth at the rendezvous
MNC can indeed attest to this: young people were quite strongly represented at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, especially on the automotive side. The "connected" aspect of today’s cars attracts 16-18 year olds, fond of new technologies: a track to dig on the motorcycles of tomorrow ?
"We have indeed noted a large influx of young people on Wednesday days", replies Laure de Verdun when MNC is surprised to have met so many under 20s in the middle of the week. "It is encouraging for the future", notes the communicator of AMC adding that "the past attendance records have been broken every day".
"Yes, we have seen young people, a lot of young people: that too is a very positive signal", continues Jean-Luc Mars. The Managing Director of Triumph France now believes that we must use this good dynamic to improve the consideration of motorcycles in other areas "such as safety and infrastructure".
And on the business side ?
Another novelty for 2018: exhibitors were allowed to register orders directly on their stands. This initiative aimed to meet the demand of several motorcycle manufacturers, who wanted to improve their return on investment at the Paris show..
Logical, after all: the Mondial is certainly an excellent showcase to promote the latest technologies and publicize a new range, but the main objective is to sell them, these motorcycles, not just to exhibit them. !
Reconciling business and exhibition does not seem to go hand in hand for all exhibitors, however, as MNC has observed: on several stands, no sales team was dispatched to have purchase orders signed. Astonishing.
Manufacturers admit to us being embarrassed with this practice which could cause them problems with their network. How to choose the seller? Who finalizes the order? Which dealer should the customer direct the customer to when the purchase is made? So many problems that some have preferred to avoid.
"Many brands were not taking orders, including Kawasaki and Yamaha", confirms Jean-Luc Mars who had also made this choice on his stand as General Manager of Triumph France, "but Honda did and seems satisfied ".
"All the lights are green to renew the formula in 2020"
The doubts expressed in recent months on the interest of the Mondial de la Moto in Paris therefore seem to have been swept away by the strong attendance recorded during these eleven days of the show: bringing together cars and motorcycles seems to have been a winning bet that all exhibitors are delighted with..
"It is too early to comment on anything, but clearly all the lights are green to renew this formula in 2020", approves Jean-Luc Mars who nevertheless considers some avenues of improvement for the next edition.
"We have all seen or suffered the attitude of the town hall of Paris and the prefecture towards visitors coming on motorbikes, and this is obviously one of the negative points to try to correct", warns the president of the CSIAM.
- MNC of 5 October 2018 : The motophobic behavior of the Paris town hall complicates parking at the Mondial de la Moto
Lucid, Jean-Luc Mars knows that it will be difficult to "negotiate with the municipal team" and rather plans to consult with other builders and the organizer in order to develop concrete measures to improve access and parking near the show.
"The success of this edition pleads in favor of the motorcycle: let’s take advantage of it to use it as a lever to act on problematic points like this one", concludes the French leader. See you in 2020, therefore, perhaps in the presence of manufacturers absent this year? To follow naturally on MNC: stay connected !
