No motorcycle show in Paris this year: what tracks for 2018 ?
The next Paris Motorcycle Show, which should have been held at the end of the year, will not take place. The manufacturers will examine on Friday a proposal from the organizer for a show at Le Bourget in March 2018, which if not retained could pave the way for a mixed car-motorcycle show on the model of the Brussels show.. What are the challenges in a difficult economic context? What do the main manufacturers think? Explanations.
How to reinvent the motorcycle show ?
The next major motorcycle event in Paris would be postponed to March 2018 (less close to the Milan show) and moved from Porte de Versailles to Le Bourget (a priori less expensive). This is in substance the content of the proposal that the organizer of the Motorcycle Show will submit this Friday to the manufacturers gathered in the International Chamber of Automobile and Motorcycle Syndicates (CSIAM), after five preparatory meetings..
"We will assess the costs in the organizer’s proposal at Le Bourget, but if they are close to those of Porte de Versailles for Honda it will be no", warns Fabrice Recoque, director of the motorcycle division at Honda France. who says he is "very satisfied" with the last show at Porte de Versailles in December 2015 even if "currently there are not enough visitors (editor’s note) compared to the sums invested".
Return on investment
"We’ll see if it’s playable, especially in terms of cost, but for the moment everyone is up for Le Bourget", tempers Eric de Seynes, president of the motorcycle branch of the CSIAM and general manager of Yamaha Motor Europe, already at the origin of when he ran Option Organization before after only one edition. "In the digital age, the days when people came to discover a model at a show are almost over because bikers have real-time access to each new motorcycle," summarizes Eric de Seynes. "We must therefore reinvent ourselves to arouse new interest and encourage visitors to come to a trade show. The trade shows that work best are regional trade fairs such as Lyon, Cagnes-sur-Mer or even Pecquencourt, because people are the most distant from big cities have already seen everything on the Internet ".
The context has changed considerably since the first cancellation of the Porte de Versailles show in. Faced with Cologne and Milan, the Paris Motor Show has given up its international ambitions and is no longer called "Mondial" for motorcycles, manufacturers want to reduce costs and improve their return on investment and visitors already have access to a front even the presentation of a new model…
As the organizers of the 24 H Motos and the Bol d’Or have already done in an attempt to curb public disaffection (), the motorcycle show must therefore reposition itself and find solutions to once again seduce exhibitors and visitors.
On the track of Brussels: an auto-motorcycle show in Paris ?
In the event that the CSIAM rejects a show at Le Bourget in March 2018 (for reasons of cost and location, in particular), the idea of a show bringing together both cars and motorcycles, such as the takes place until January 22 in the Belgian capital, could return to the front of the stage. "If the costs of Le Bourget are close to those of the Porte de Versailles, there is little interest in relocating", estimates Fabrice Recoque at Honda, but "we need a salon, it is very important".
"We are working on several tracks which are still under debate within the CSIAM", explains Christophe Decultot, general manager of Honda France. "The goal is to make this fair even a little more alive, more emotional, but at the same time to try to reduce costs to make a fair more financially reasonable".
The motorcycle hall of the Brussels Motor Show is indeed distinguished by its sobriety with reasonable-sized stands, all on one level, without frills or expensive structures, focused on the essentials: motorcycles, prices, technical sheets and sellers. Because the Belgian show is not a simple showcase but is a real trade show where in a few days "up to 60% of annual sales" would take place..
Auto, motorcycle, mobility and new technologies
"This" mixed "auto-motorcycle show has advantages and disadvantages," continues Christophe Decultot, specifying that for the moment it is only a "line of thought. By the end of the first quarter, it will be necessary to make decisions. For the moment the reflection is on March 2018, and if it does not succeed it will pave the way in a concrete way to a mixed car-motorcycle show ".
The big advantage of a mixed car-motorcycle show would naturally be linked to the high attendance at the Motor Show: "a mixed show would immediately attract 1.2 million visitors", calculates the CEO of Honda, but "this is not the ideal solution either to express the specificities of the bike, the passion, the dynamic part. There was a small initiative in 2016 with one, which we did not support because it was not a very qualitative device ".
“Maybe one day there will also be this concept of a mixed car-motorcycle show in Paris,” confirms Fabrice Recoque. “The real concept we are looking for is perhaps to have a show in which we would have the car and the motorbike, but separated with dedicated stands. There is no question of making mixed car stands. motorcycle for those who can do it, but to bring together the two universes on the same perimeter and talk about mobility and technologies of the future "(as unveiled in Las Vegas, editor’s note).
What to think of an auto-motorcycle show for Paris ?
Before the members of the CSIAM vote on a proposal for a motorcycle show at Le Bourget on Friday in March 2018, MNC wanted to know the opinion of the main manufacturers on the possibility of a mixed auto-motorcycle show..
