Races - 2017 San Marino Moto2 GP report and standings -

Switzerland is in the spotlight at the 2017 San Marino Grand Prix with the victory of Swiss driver Dominique Aegerter ahead of his compatriot Tom Luthi! Hafizh Syahrin climbs on his first podium since 2012 at the end of this race disputed in the pouring rain in Misano. Franco Morbidelli, a time leader, left Italy empty-handed following a crash. Report and results.

The start is given in the rain, the intensity of which has not decreased since the finish of the Moto3 race. The track is totally wet, and it’s Franco Morbidelli who sets the pace from the start in front of Aegerter and Pasini. But the latter, author of his 4th consecutive pole, loses from the first laps the front of his motorcycle as well as his hopes of victory..

Then it’s the turn of Franco Morbidelli, leader of the championship, to go to the mat 23 laps from the finish in turn 8! At home, the Italian does not manage to leave: it is the abandonment, his second this season with the GP of Spain. The Swiss Dominique Aegerter recovers the lead of the race with a good second ahead of his compatriot Tom Luthi and Portuguese Miguel Oliveira.

Sadly, Oliveira made a mistake on his official KTM, leaving Aegerter and Luthi to do battle with 16 laps to go. Luthi stays in the wake for a long time – wet! – from Aegerter, holding back his attacks when he seems in places faster. Five laps from the finish, the two Helvetians are joined by the third: the Malaysian Hafizh Syahrin, formidable in these wet conditions. Hence the nickname "The Fish" for this driver whose last podium dates back to the 2012 Malaysian GP !

But Syahrin‘s efforts were not enough to pick up, as the leaders accelerated for the final sprint. Dominique Aegerter, solid and consistent, emerged victorious ahead of Thomas Luthi. Aegerter signs his second Moto2 victory, the last to be at the 2014 German GP.

Suffering from a hand injury, Fabio Quartararo finished in a good 7th position, losing a place at the finish due to a – furious – penalty of two seconds awarded for having exceeded the limits of the track.

The results of the Moto2 championship

Tom Luthi achieved an excellent operation with his 2nd place in Misano since it allowed him to reduce his gap over Franco Morbidelli from 29 to 9 points. With this second white result, the Italian sees his leadership threatened as the season enters its final third. Another beneficiary of the numerous falls (15 pilots on the ground in all, some twice!): Alex Marquez, forced to forfeit Friday following his fall in the first free practice session (small fracture of the pelvis).

With the falls of Morbidelli and especially Oliveira, Marquez limits the hemorrhage of points in the championship and especially keeps his third place in the provisional with 155 pts against 223 for Morbidelli and 214 for Luthi.
