Johann Zarco is the most fallen MotoGP rider of 2020
The MotoGP 2020 season is over, it’s time for performance reviews … and poor performance! In terms of falls, in particular, the prize goes to Johann Zarco with 15 track trips on his Ducati-Avintia… Not reliable the Cannes pilot? In reality, the n ° 5 stays on its wheels at the right moment: in the race! Explanations.
With only fifteen races against 20 in 2019, the past season logically deplores fewer falls with 722 roll and roll in the gravel – all categories combined – against 971 last year. This difference of 249 bowls is also explained by the doubling of the events on certain circuits, which reduces the errors caused by the discovery of the route..

- MNC file :
The MotoGP category alone records 180 crashes over fourteen events (only Moto3 and Moto2 participated in the Qatar GP), an average of 12.8 errors per Grand Prix. In comparison, that average was 11.6 in 2019 with 220 falls in 20 races. The record not to be broken dates back to 2017 with 313 bowls in 18 races, an average of 17.4 falls per event !
Among the elite, Johann Zarco is the most frequently seen driver on the ground in 2020 with 15 crashes. The Frenchman is ahead of the rookie Alex Marquez (14 crashes on the restive Honda) and the Aprilia rider Aleix Espargaro, who went wrong 12 times in his RS-GP (not to mention the countless races aborted due to technical problems …).
Little consolation for Johann: his score improved compared to his "half-season" on KTM last year since he had fallen 15 times with the RC16, then twice more at the end of the season during his three years on the Honda-LCR (in Malaysia and Valencia).
Find the limits on Saturday, respect them on Sunday
Johann Zarco being rather considered a reliable rider, how to explain to see him appear at the top of this sad classification established by MotoGP.com? Simple: the Cannes driver did not spare himself to understand and tame the Ducati, a powerful and stable motorcycle but also difficult to pinpoint on the angle.
The stakes were high as the French competed for the factory handlebars with the Reds, before finally securing his future within the excellent Ducati-Pramac team alongside rookie Jorge Martin. Johann had only 14 races to make people forget his failure at KTM and convince Ducati decision-makers !
The multiplication of errors in these conditions is understandable, if not satisfactory: the double Moto2 world champion would obviously have done well without his 15 antics, just like his former mechanics at Avintia! Especially since the painful experience experienced by Marc Marquez reminds that a single fall is enough to wipe out a season, or even more….
- MNC of 4 December 2020 : Marquez operated a third time … for all ?!
Moreover, the reading of these figures must be put into perspective: Johann has certainly fallen often, but under what circumstances? This summary effectively records the errors made throughout the weekend, including practice sessions and races. The analysis of the data shows that twelve of its fifteen bowls took place during the tests. And the tests are made to try !
In the race, Johann only fell three times: immediately much less worrying as a value! The first time goes back to the Austrian GP, when his frightening high-speed collision with Franco Morbidelli had caused immense fear in Viñales and Rossi who saw the motorcycles in distress pass them under their noses….
Johann Zarco then made a mistake in the first lap of the Catalan GP, following a reflex braking on the angle in reaction to a maneuver by Danilo Petrucci in front of him. This fall is the most frustrating for the French, because he had involuntarily taken Andrea Dovizioso with him in the gravel … Finally, his third and last error in the race dates back to the Grand Prix of Valencia.
Who falls in the race of other MotoGP riders ?
Three falls in fourteen races: both a lot and a little in view of his inexperience on the Ducati. Compare for example with the three consecutive errors of Valentino Rossi at Misano (Italy), Barcelona (Spain) then Le Mans (72) on a Yamaha that the Italian knows perfectly well..
Joan Mir for his part fell twice in the race (Jerez and Brno), before adopting a regularity at the forefront which allowed him to win the title despite a third white result due to a technical problem in the final in Portugal.
His teammate Alex Rins occupies third place in the championship despite his three trips out of the track during the GP of Spain, Austria and France. The same goes for Pol Espargaro, fifth in the standings despite his three faults (Brno, Austria and Catalonia). That is to say as many falls in the race as Johann.
Note that the French driver finished 13th overall, just one point behind Danilo Petrucci on the official Ducati, and this while the future KTM-Tech3 driver is the holder the least often in 2020 (2 falls, like. .. Marc Marquez!).
His compatriot Fabio Quartararo has for his part posted eight falls this season, up two units compared to 2019. This increase is not trivial insofar as the calendar had five races less … It must be seen the one of the reasons for the "fall" in the ranking of the young man from Nice, from first to eighth place.
