Road safety - Jacques Chirac rewards the city of Montaigu for its action in favor of the safety of two-wheelers -

The city of Montaigu (Vendee) was awarded this morning at the Elysee the special prize "Action in the direction of motorized two-wheelers" from the hands of Jacques Chirac himself, under the eyes of his flamboyant wife and an areopagus of officials in their Sunday best.

The 2006 vintage of the Echarpes d’Or de la Prevention Routière, awarded by the association of the same name since 1990, took place this morning in a particularly symbolic setting: the majestic village hall of the Elysee Palace…

With the approach of the presidential election of 2007, and while the Minister of the Interior continues to deploy with all his arms the automatic radars symbols of this new "major national project", it was indeed urgent for Jacques Chirac to recall that he was himself at the origin of this"great national cause".

Under the eyes of his flamboyant wife, all mane out, Jacques Chirac declared to mayors, general councilors, regional councilors, activists and leaders of associations that "thanks to you, thanks to the mobilization of the French, we have succeeded in bringing to life the collective project that I launched on July 14, 2002 in favor of road safety".

"This is why I wanted to receive you here, in the house of the Republic, with my wife who is an ardent activist of this cause, to pay you homage", he added.

Specifying that he wanted "pay tribute to Remy Heitz, who for more than three years has served remarkably as interministerial delegate for road safety", the President of the Republic also encouraged his replacement, Cecile Petit (read):"I am counting on her to continue and further amplify the action taken".

"We still have a long way to go when it comes to two-wheeler riders", continued Jacques Chirac:"it is unacceptable that the proportion of accidents involving them is constantly increasing, especially in large cities".

Among the projects awarded the 2006 Golden Scarves of Road Safety, the town of Montaigu in Vendee (4,708 inhabitants) was awarded the Special Prize "Action in the direction of motorized two-wheelers" for the "mobilization of young people and their parents on the two-wheeler risk". Following the death in 2001 of 5 schoolchildren in motorized two-wheeler accidents, the city has"decided to react by attacking the problem on several fronts: road works to control traffic (zones 30, roundabouts), in particular around schools, speed checks with the gendarmerie and above all an awareness campaign for young people and their families".

Carried out in partnership with the city’s colleges, this operation allows the young people of Montaigu to visit five workshops led by various road safety actors (gendarmes, firefighters, driving school instructors, road safety representatives and insurers), while asking them questions in order to complete their "roadmap" which will allow them if necessary to win gifts.

At the same time, parents are invited to a meeting with the same workers and in the presence of a psychoanalyst to help them understand adolescents..

A few months later, the teenagers from Montaigu who took part in the operation fill out an evaluation questionnaire aimed at measuring what they have learned from these different workshops..

Considering that "to change behavior, we must act over time", the villieriste mayor of Montaigu Antoine Chereau (MPF) renews the operation every year by making it evolve.

Next step: make 4th year students aware of the risks of driving "under the influence of cannabis"… Until next year a sensitization of elected officials to the" risks of driving under the influence of brut rose from the buffets of the Republic " ?
