The mayor of London still in favor of the circulation of motorcycles in the bus lanes
Following the lobbying of MAG UK (Motorcycle Action Group, the British equivalent of the FFMC), the mayor of London is in favor of the circulation of motorcycles in the bus lanes and their exemption from congestion charge in restricted traffic areas. Explanations.
The (Labor) mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has just met a delegation of bikers representing the (MAG, equivalent of the French Federation of Angry Bikers) to discuss two subjects that concern our cousins across the Channel: the circulation of motorcycles in the bus lanes and free access for motorized two-wheelers in congestion charge zones.

- MNC of December 27, 2011 :
MNC readers recall that in 2011, MAG activists had already gotten to motorcycles on axes managed directly by Transport of London (TfL, the public body that runs public transport in the British capital). Since the election of Mr. Khan in 2016, a booster shot was necessary, especially as the situation is still confused between the streets dependent on TfL and those managed by other districts of the city.
Wakeup call
"We’ve been waiting for this meeting for a long time, but it was worth it!", Rejoices the MAG UK delegate for the Greater London region, who was able to remind the London elected official that: "the polluting emissions from motorcycles are insignificant in the pollution of London ", summarizes Tim Fawthrop. "I suggested that we find a way to exempt motorcycles that can show that they emit very little pollutant emissions and the mayor has allowed us to explore this subject with his team, which is a good result ".
On the bus routes, "the discussion was even more encouraging," said the elected Keith Prince, member of the City Council of Greater London (Greater London Authority Assembly) who made it possible to organize this meeting: "the mayor is d agreed that motorcycles would be allowed to ride in the bus lanes. He assured us that the so-called "Red Routes", which depend directly on Transport of London would remain open to motorcycles and added that that he would work with the MAG to encourage the London Boroughs (the equivalent of the town halls of districts and municipalities of Greater Paris, Editor’s note) to also open their bus lanes to motorcycles ".
- Two-wheelers in town :
- Restricted traffic areas :
"I am delighted to see that the mayor has kept his promises", concludes the elected representative of Greater London. MAG members will now meet with various public officials to move forward on these two subjects.
Unlike Paris, the City of London indeed seems particularly concerned by the situation of motorcyclists, their safety – – and the role they can play in an urban transport policy as an alternative to "any car"..
"Unnecessary confusion"
Already in 2016, the municipality regretted "the unnecessary confusion" between the bus lanes of the streets managed by TfL (authorized for motorcycles) and the others (prohibited) by asking "for a more proactive strategy on the part of TfL to allow a coherent approach. in all the city". It was also launching the Easy Rider operation for better safety of bikers (video below).
In Paris, on the other hand, despite one on the bus routes in 2009,: since and until, motorcycles and scooters in terms of urban transport are still not considered…
