Roadster - Test MV Agusta Brutale 800 RR: adorable gaRce ... - Brutale 800 RR: it aRache severe!

Two new 2015 models come to top the 3-cylinder series at MV Agusta: the Brutale 800 RR and its Dragster 800 RR version. Site participated in their press presentation in Italy and in “ full ”. Here is the test of the roadsteRRrr…

Brutale 800 RR: it aRache severe !

Unchanged from the standard Brutale 800, the braking system is unsurprisingly another – very – strong point of this "Double R". Adjustable to the millimeter, both biting and powerful at will, the front brake has nothing to envy the best sports cars on the market.

The efficiency of the front brake is such that we very quickly forget the rear element, less good because too hard to trigger via the pedal. The lack of feeling – of "feeling" – harms the precision: on the small Tuscan roads which are sometimes a little greasy, we quickly wake up the ABS despite the excellent grip of the Diablo Rosso II.

Conversely, the traction control intervenes very late and leaves an astonishing freedom to the pilot. Set by the Italian staff at level 3 (between zero "disconnected" and 8, the most intrusive level), it allows acrobatic bikers to lift the front wheel over – very, very, very – long distances !

Rather little tightrope walker at heart – especially on the handlebars of a machine of 14,000 euros … -, MNC was content to test the system in a straight line and then out of a curve, without ever feeling the slightest start to skid, while the drifts due to small wrinkles in the road were limited to their simplest expression.

However, the site did not remain with the right handle screwed on stupidly – but simply! – thoroughly throughout the test: in the hairpins for example, the gas management has proved to be very appreciable. We are very far from the bumpy beginnings of the "Tre Pistoni" 675: the engine responds perfectly to the demands of the pilot.

Yet configured by our guests in the most expressive "Sport" mode, the Italian 3-cylinder is particularly manageable. Certainly, when leaving the hotel, MNC stalled in front of the MV Agusta engineers … A great moment of solitude due to the particularly reasoned increase in engine speed on the first degrees of opening angle of the throttle.

Contrary to expectations – even fears -, the mill of the Brutale 800 RR is therefore not an uncontrollable ball of nerves. Surprising, this docility is really appreciable, whether you are driving in a traffic jam or on a winding road..

The pickups can be super smooth, thus avoiding disturbing the balance of the machine. By being more abrupt with the accelerator, the Brutale retains this smoothness that we did not know. The addition of a second series of injectors is undoubtedly not foreign to this pleasant behavior….

The "Normal" mode suddenly seems unnecessary, while the "Rain" mode limited to 100 horses may possibly reassure in the rain. Site did not have the leisure to create its own "Custom" mode: the electronic fairy allows you to adjust the sensitivity of the right handle to the engine brake, as on the standard Brutale 800.

The level of sophistication is taken up a notch on the Brutale 800 RR thanks to the second-generation EAS (Electronic Assisted Shift) which now allows downshifts without resorting to the clutch lever. Tested but not approved on the F4, the system has passed the test of the road hands down – the left, which is no longer useful !

To drop a gear on the RR, just cut the throttle – completely! – and push the selector down, requiring quite moderate movement and effort from the left ankle. The synchronization of the engine speed is perfect and the gear change is done without the slightest jerk.

Trying the "downshift" is immediately adopting it. We also wonder why MV Agusta does not activate it in "Rain" and "Normal" modes … Let us also hope that this brilliant "EAS 2.0" will be quickly adopted on the brand’s sports cars: MNC will be done a pleasure to test its efficiency on the track !

On this "double RR", the shifter is shown to be as capable on the road at full load as in the "cool" city center. The Brutale 800 RR readily accepts to drive calmly: in addition to its perfectly calibrated injection, the roadster has a transparent transmission and a flexible engine. There are some vibrations in the hands around 90 km / h, but they remain bearable.

Crossing small villages in sixth gear at 50 km / h goes smoothly and picking up on a trickle of gas – or two, or twelve! – are impeccably mastered. Driving pleasure is also found in the suspensions which absorb the retarders with unexpected smoothness..

On a daily basis, we also appreciate the ergonomics of this MV Agusta: the back is perfectly straight, the hands are not excessively apart, the thighs are tight against the flared tank and the knees are not too bent..

The saddle placed 810 mm from the ground will only interfere with the smallest riders, those of 1.65 m – or less – who cannot simultaneously put the tips of both feet on the ground. All bikers, on the other hand, will welcome its thickness – astonishing for an MV! – and its depth, allowing the older ones to step back.

Do not count on this exclusive version of the Brutale to integrate warnings or a fuel gauge, or to steer shorter: the "Double RR" has not – yet? – yielded to all requests from urban bikers that it targets however as a priority…

However, this clientele would do well to consider this Brutale 800 RR when purchasing their future roadster: high in relation to its displacement and certain finishing points – rilsan and connectors remain desperately apparent – the price of this new MV Agusta does not seem unreasonable given its dynamic capabilities.

Rather than with displacement averages of 675, 750 or other 848 cc, this "Tre Pistoni" will be compared moreover to sporty roadsters of 1000 cc (3-cylinder 1050 or 847 especially!). MV Agusta – its new subsidiary in France! – has a very good product … which remains to be marketed properly.
