2017 Yamaha MT-09 review: mult (r) iples pleasures !
Having become a bestseller in just four years, the Yamaha MT-09 is full of positive developments for 2017: revised design, improved ergonomics, increased equipment … And its 847 cc three-cylinder, in all that ? Rest assured: Euro4 hasn’t made him lose any of his exciting character! Test.
Page 1 – Static: between details and real developments
Launched, it marked a frank break in Japanese motorcycle production, with its unique and striking three-cylinder "CP3", its featherweight and its daring design. The new Yam ‘roadster has easily supplanted its compatriots who have often remained faithful to 4-cylinders. The surge Master of Torque (MT) and its "" universe was launched, then declined in,, and recently .
Four years later, the MT-09 continues to seduce massively, as evidenced by its status as. However, its success is starting to wane in the face of the rise of certain competitors … especially internally: its very successful road version "" now blows the spotlight on the French market (5th sale on) !
Responsive, Yamaha is therefore taking advantage of the mandatory changeover to Euro4 for many improvements, some rather superficial but others much more substantial. Thus, the new front part on which is grafted a double LED optic does not constitute a clear break: this threatening facies, sinful but almost, refers directly to the MT-10…
This parallel with the "Hyper-Naked" is reinforced by the adoption of its "cement gray" color and its "Yellow Replica vest" rims, to say the least flashy! Some will like it, others will hate … The MT range has never gone into consensus, even if it means dividing, and this policy is fully assumed by Yamaha (read our). We nevertheless deplore a too marked connection between the "9" and the "10", detrimental to the development of the identity of each.
The rear part inherits a redesigned LED light, in the form of a double point quite similar to that of the BMW S1000. Despite a shortening of 29 mm, the rear buckle of the aluminum frame receives a slightly more spacious passenger seat of 13 mm (all the technical details in our Detailed point on page 4). Also redesigned, the pilot seat rises by 5 mm and goes from 815 to 820 mm.
The "grooming" of the MT-09 2017 continues at the level of the scoops grafted around the radiator – where the indicators are now fixed – and by the new design of its air intakes. The whole gives off a better visual balance than on the previous model, with the very unstructured silhouette. From there to talking about harmonious lines, however, there is a step that MNC will not take. !
Finally, the license plate holder adopts an offset positioning, as on many customs and Ducati Diavel or Multistrada. This unique attachment takes the form of a perforated aluminum arm attached to the left side of the asymmetric swingarm. Original, if not perfectly integrated: its "added part" aspect can put off, as well as the somewhat cheap metal cover placed on the end of the silencer to create the illusion of a bevelled exit.
Fortunately, these details constitute the rare faults in terms of finish: the plastics are correctly adjusted, the surface treatments do not lend themselves to criticism, nor the integration of the beam. To quibble, one can blame the passage a little too visible of the hoses of the ABS on the rear. But given its price, which is just below the € 9,000 mark (€ 8,999), it is difficult to be choosy: some roadsters sold for several thousand euros more expensive may take the seed. !
Almost identical engine and chassis: who will complain? ?
Especially since the MT-09 has a very attractive mechanical and technical package: its 847 cc three-cylinder delivers 115 hp and 87.5 Nm, without sacrificing anything on the altar of Euro4 (all details in page 4). Connoisseurs will appreciate: this 3-legged is a must in motorcycle production, barely less snappy than MV Agusta’s "Tre Pistoni" and even more expansive than Triumph’s "Three cylinders". Kind of compliment !
As in 2016, the standard equipment includes three maps and adjustable traction control. It is enriched with an anti-slip clutch and a shifter that works when upshifting. The cycle part does not undergo any major changes, with the exception of the grafting of an inverted fork now fully adjustable (only trigger and preload in 2016). Yamaha took the opportunity to review the setting of the suspensions, one of the few criticisms of the previous MT-09.
Finally, note the displacement of the digital instrumentation on the headlight support for better visibility. This monochrome display gives the time, the gear engaged, the fuel level, the mode engaged, the level of the "TCS" traction control, two daily trips, the average and instantaneous consumption and the engine and air temperatures. It’s complete !
Too bad that some information is hard to decipher because of their small print – increments of engine speed and time, among others – and that scrolling through them requires pressing small push buttons on the dashboard: remote controls on the commodos would be appreciated . These shortcomings are however quickly forgotten behind the handlebars, as you will see on the next page. !
