The new Xmax arrive: test of the 250 cc
Yamaha had announced it: in 2010, its Xmax will be sharper than ever thanks to some aesthetic but also mechanical alterations. This is what we were able to verify yesterday by taking the controls of the 250, twin brother of the 125. Test !
250 cc: the right compromise ?
More discreet, the changes in the engine are threefold: new radiator, new magnetic flywheel and new mapping. Yamaha advances "improved cooling capacity, reduced fuel consumption and reduced power loss".
Information difficult to appreciate during our first test run of only 100 km in Paris and its suburbs … and partially contradicted by the technical characteristics of the 2008 and 2010 models: the 2008 technical sheet attributes the 249.78 cc single cylinder a maximum power of 21.2 hp at 7,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 21.3 Nm 1000 rpm lower, while that of 2010 evokes 20.4 hp and 21 Nm at the same speeds…
In fact, according to the document displayed during the "press briefing" of our test, the increases in power are at lower speeds: 12.6 hp at 1,500 rpm for the 2010 (11 hp for the previous models), 15.9 hp at 3000 rpm (against 14.5 previously) and 19.5 hp at 5000 rpm (18.5)…
On the handlebars, only regulars will perhaps feel the difference. And in the end, the essential is preserved: the 250 always surprises the 125 at the start of the traffic lights and easily reaches 140 km / h on the expressway: you gain confidence – even safety – in front of cars and trucks. !
The smoothness of the transmission is always there and we take pleasure in driving – and not just driving – this scooter! The only brake on arson: a crutch that can come and lick the road. But there is room on overcrowded roundabouts or slippery cobblestones !
As for the weight of the Xmax 250, it does not seem to move much: 165 kg dry in 2008, 180 kg all full done in 2010 … The scooter is therefore easy to maneuver and crutch. Be careful, however, of the saddle height, which goes from 755 to 792 mm. But at the same time, descents from sidewalks are made easier: ground clearance increases from 113 to 134.5 mm !
Available from April 2010 for less than € 5,000 – that is to say € 4,999, as Pierre Bellemare would say – the Xmax 250 is therefore an interesting alternative to the Xmax 125, less expensive but less efficient, and at Tmax, more sporty but much more expensive (about twice!).
Finally, that the holders of the only license B console themselves: the 125 version of the new Xmax will land "next spring, at a rate for the moment unknown", warns Yamaha Motor France. It is therefore certain that next year we will still hear about the Xmax 125 in the Site market reports. !
