Latin America by motorcycle (18): on the road to El Cocuy
Ah, Colombia! The last country on the trip, the one that surely has the worst reputation. And yet, the police – very present – are super nice and the people adorable. Each stop at the restaurant is an opportunity to speak with the boss or customers on the road to Mocoa.
Ah, Colombia! The last country on the trip, the one that surely has the worst reputation. And yet the police – very present – are super nice and the people adorable. Each stop at the restaurant is an opportunity to speak with the boss or customers on the road to Mocoa.
In the evening, I sympathize with one of the hotel employees who is passionate about enduro. On the road to El Cocuy, I meet great people and jump from gas station to gas station to sleep at night. Each time people are super cool, I even had the right once to the small coffee in the morning. Foot !
After two days on the road I stop at Boyaca to eat a little chicken and fries. The waiter brings me the plate … and a plastic glove to eat! Never seen !
The boss comes to see me and starts typing the chat. The little 250 parked around the corner is his: he’s a biker. He traveled miles on his trestle in Colombia, Ecuador and even Peru.
I then took out my road map just to have some advice and he told me to go to Armero, the village buried by a mudslide following the eruption of the Ruiz volcano 30 years ago. The most impressive is surely the hospital, of which only the third floor is above ground.
I then branch off towards the volcano itself, but the road is blocked by a landslide: I have to make a small detour before stopping in the next town. That evening, the gas station does not inspire me so I go see the firefighters.
- – You think I can hang my hammock here ?
- – Do you really want to sleep in a hammock? Don’t you want a bed instead? We have free in the dormitory !
Brilliant, I am received like a king. The time to get to know the whole team and direct they show me their trucks, including the large scale which dates from 54.
Today is Saturday. The budding firefighters train in the barracks: abs, push-ups, that’s no joke. They are cute the kids in the picture … Now take a closer look, you will laugh !
Then I leave for the volcano which is currently active. If the clouds will prevent me from seeing him, I assure you that I felt his presence, the air being saturated with sulfur.
After my lightning excursion on the Ruiz volcano, I pushed further north: Tunja, Duitama, to finally stop in the evening in a small restaurant, "La Casa del sabor campestre", a little after Soata.
I stop to eat and immediately they tell me to put the motorcycle in the restaurant, because it is starting to rain. We sympathize, and finally I go with them to eat and they invite me to stay and sleep.
In terms of travel, the three sons are not left out: one of eurx, for example, has traveled South America for four years and discussions are going well..
The next day, after a family breakfast and a short walk to take in the measure of this magnificent valley, I go to El Cocuy at the foot of the most beautiful mountain range in Colombia..
On the village square sits a model of what awaits me the next few days: the guibolles will overheat … To be continued: stay tuned !
