Sporty - First test MV Agusta F3 800: maxi Supersport - Technical update MV Agusta F3 800 EAS

Developed at the same time as the 3-cylinder MV Agusta 675, the 800 cc version of the Tre Pistoni was unveiled this winter on the Brutale. Today, the F3 800 is entering the track on the Misano circuit (Italy). First try !

Engine

The engine of the F3 800 is based on that of the F3 675. "In fact, both versions of this engine were developed at the same time", reveals Giovanni Castiglioni."From the start, a little over five years ago, we worked on the 675 and the 800"

The bore of "Tre Pistoni"is unchanged (79.0 mm) but the stroke goes from 45.9 mm to 54.3 mm, thus bringing the displacement of the mill to 798 cc. The distribution system with double overhead camshaft and its four valves in titanium per cylinder is renewed as is.

On the other hand, new injectors ensure better filling – force-feeding! – engine and pistons have been redesigned. Thus modified, the combustion chamber tolerates an even higher compression ratio on the 800: 13.3: 1 instead of 13: 1 on the little sister.

According to MV Agusta, the maximum power reached by this version is 148 hp at 13,000 rpm (+20 hp compared to the F3 675) while the torque rises to 88 Nm at 10,600 rpm (+17 Nm ). Only the intervention of the breaker has been reduced by 1,500 revolutions, or 13,500 rpm on the 800.

The cooling circuits (oil and water) are still integrated in the casings, as are their pumps, "with obvious advantages both in terms of style and compactness", congratulate the designers. But their greatest pride lies elsewhere…

The original counter-rotating crankshaft inaugurated on the Italian 675 is naturally kept on the F3 800. As a reminder, this solution – notably used in MotoGP by Yamaha on its M1 – makes it possible to reduce the inertia of the machine, improving its general balance and facilitating angle changes.

In a straight line this time, the F3 800 benefits from a final gear ratio a little longer than its little sister (17/41 against 16/43, the primary and gear ratios are inched) and could reach around 269 km / h. For comparison, the top speed of the F3 675 is estimated at 260 km / h, that of the F4 at 291 km / h..

But it is in terms of acceleration that the new MV Agusta should stand out: with a dry weight identical to that of the 675 (173 kg) and 20 additional horsepower, the 800 prides itself on being able to keep up with the 1000 cc. !

"And that’s not all", warn the Italians. According to them, the response of the throttle, whatever the conditions, as well as the smoothness of the arrival of the power at mid-range are markedly improved."These two crucial factors greatly increase the pleasure of riding on the road, and decrease the lap times on the track.".

Finally, the F3 800 is delivered as standard with the shifter (hence its name "F3 800 EAS" for "Electronic Assisted Shift") which allows gears to be increased without unscrewing the right handle or touching the clutch. Unlike the F4, however, the F3 system does not allow gears to be dropped without disengaging…

"Not at the moment ! But a software update will soon integrate this function on the F3 which already has a limited slip clutch.", warns Brian Gillen, F3 and F4 development manager in Varese. Ma, forza elettronica !

Part-cycle

We find on the F3 800 the vast majority of the elements present on the F3 675 … And who would complain after all ?! The frame always mixes a tubular front part in ALS steel and a central part made up of a pair of cast aluminum side plates.

The single-sided swingarm – also in aluminum – still measures 576.5 mm and accommodates the same Sachs single shock absorber with a separate nitrogen tank. The spring preload obviously remains adjustable, just like the compression and rebound of the hydraulics..

The Marzocchi fork and its 43 mm legs are also back in service, and are adjustable in preload, compression and rebound. "We just revised the valves of the fork and the shock absorber in order to manage the additional powers of the engine … and the brakes", specifies Brian Gillen.

Indeed, the F3 800 accelerates harder but also brakes drier than the 675 thanks to its pair of monobloc Brembo "M4.34a" calipers. "The front brake pistons of the F3 675 are a little smaller: 32 mm", reminds us the technical manager.

No change, however, as regards the diameter of the two front discs (320 mm) and the rear brake system: a two-piston caliper – Brembo, what else? – which bites a 220 mm disc. The original tires fitted are Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa, 120/70-ZR17 at the front and 180/55-ZR17 at the rear.

The geometry of the bike does not vary but MV Agusta allows itself to insist on one value: the wheelbase of 1380 mm, "a record achievement which is the basis of the exceptional agility of this revolutionary three-cylinder", assure the Italians.

Electronic

"MV Agusta’s three-cylinder project brought the most advanced electronics to mid-displacement", welcomes the Varese plant. The platform called MVICS (Motor and Vehicle Integrated Control System) combines electronic control of the accelerator and throttle bodies with traction control.

The "Ride By Wire" is the very basis of MVICS: the system triggers the ideal opening of the throttle bodies at any time, so that it does not depend – only! – the angular rotation of the throttle grip.

"There is no mechanical stress between the accelerator and the butterflies", insists the manufacturer,"injection and ignition mapping define the optimal air-fuel mixture to deliver the best performance at all times and under all load conditions".

Like the F3 675 and the F4, the F3 800 has three engine maps designed by MV Agusta technicians (Sport, Normal and Rain). Once the engine has started, it is possible to juggle between each mode – even while driving – via the starter button.

A fourth mode called Custom allows the pilot to fully customize his engine via electronics: "he can then select the power curve (S, N or R), the engine response, the sensitivity of the throttle, the engine brake…"

Like its sisters, the "eight hundred" has a traction control system offering eight levels of intervention (from 1 mini to 8 maxi) and can be disconnected by the bravest … The adjustment is done this time using the left stalk, which also allows you to scroll through the many information from the on-board computer.

"One last thing we must insist on", Giovanni Castiglionni tells us:"engine maps and electronic assistance are constantly evolving. However, our customers can take advantage of these improvements by updating their motorcycle at their dealership … So even in two years or more, F3 800 owners will still have an MV Agusta at the top. !", promises the great Italian chef.
