Racing Street according to Pirelli

After Michelin, which presented this winter a model of its kind – the Power Race 2CT – it is Pirelli, with its commitment to Superbike, Supersport and Superstock, which offers from June 2006 the Diablo Corsa III: the same tire as the one used by the pilots of the European Superstock 600 championship. A championship created in 2005 by the promoter of the Superbike, the Italian FGSport, limited to young people under 20 years old and which serves as a nursery and revealer for the future champions of the categories Supersport and Superbike. Yoann Tiberio, recent winner of the Italian round of Monza in the Mondial Supersport (read), was vice champion 600 Superstock last year. This is to say the seriousness that animates this competition, where the hungriest young wolves compete !
The regulations of this category foresee to run with sports 600 closest to the series, Pirelli produced a tire in accordance with the regulations: a tire sold commercially, but sufficiently efficient to meet the needs of the rising generation in racing..
Double eraser: MIRS attack ! |
The double rubber composition is now made possible through the MIRS (Modular Integrated Robotized System) manufacturing principle. "MIRS is a robotic assembly which alone integrates all the stages of the manufacture of a tire", explains Pirelli. Once a fully manufactured product, the tire evolves with the times and today, the precision of MIRS allows what cannot be done by human hands: the meticulous and very precise application of two types of rubber on the same carcass. Such a tire produced in the traditional way – as is still the vast majority of world production – would inevitably have small shoulders between the different layers which would cause irreparable handling defects.. |
In terms of tires, we have been talking for several years of "dual compound" (in English in the text): it is no more and no less of casings benefiting from two types of rubber.
This concerns more particularly the rear tires whose role is to ensure, among other things, grip on the sidewalls and high resistance at high speed in the center..
This is therefore the case with the rear axle of the Diablo Corsa III, which benefits at the center of the same type of rubber as the current Diablo Corsa. On the other hand, on the sides, the rubber is about 15% softer. And it only takes an angle low enough to enter the soft eraser area.
This construction principle makes it possible to offer greater grip where it is most needed: on the maximum angle in turns and on the average angles for acceleration phases. When asked about the performance of the new Pirelli, the Superstock 600 riders were unanimous on the qualities of the rear tire. "Nothing to do with what we used last year", specifies one of them:"the rear tire fits perfectly on the angle, it offers excellent grip and above all, it slides very gradually. We control very well with him !"In addition to the construction of the carcass made up of a 0 ° belt like the other tires in the Diablo range, the double rubber nature obviously has a lot to do with the proven qualities of the rear tire..
The front tire follows different specifications: that of offering increased rigidity while rapidly rising to its ideal operating temperature (around 80 ° C). "The grip is provided by a mixture of rubber based on silica and carbon, explains Pirelli. Unlike the rear, the front tire is composed of a single type of rubber which is based on a rigid carcass composed, as at the rear, of a 0 ° belt.
In use, the front tire is a little less unanimous in the Superstock paddock. A judgment to be weighed according to the suspension settings of each. "I don’t feel much, I have the impression that the carcass is too rigid and it gives me little information from the start of the braking phase to the point of rope when I put the gas back", explains the same driver who appreciates the rear tire so much.
Salvo Pennisi, tire tester and developer at Pirelli, explains this phenomenon: "the rear has a very racing profile, the front a little less. We had to prioritize safety on the road by offering a slightly softer compound at the front and a more rigid carcass to avoid deformation during braking phases on the road. Stability and security come at this price"…
Sensations confirmed by Moto-Net during the tire test carried out on the Monza circuit, the day after the Superbike round: the rear is indeed flawless and its sporty personality undeniable, but the front seems a little harder. A judgment that is immediately tempered by trying the Diablo Corsa III on a Yamaha R1: the weight is greater than on a slight 600 and the carcass, this time, seems to work better as evidenced by the slight movements of the handlebars during braking very strong at the end of the straight line of the Milanese circuit.
In the end, this tire should delight sports fans: typical of the Pirelli Corsa family, it is a direct competitor of the Michelin Power Race 2CT. A ride that we will find both in the Promosport championship and on the road. The only unknown: his endurance … In Superstock, some drivers say they are racing a weekend without changing the front tire. Something to delight tight budgets! And as for the rear, it holds the nine laps of a Superstock round without problems..
