Crazier than the Tourist Trophy: the Ulster GP !
The last closed road race of the season took place this weekend in Northern Ireland: Bruce Anstey and Guy Martin split the two Superbike rounds while Michael Dunlop scooped the Superstock and Supersport victories…
Self-proclaimed "the fastest road race in the world," the Ulster Grand Prix is raced on the back roads of County Antrim, Northern Ireland. And the nickname of this GP unlike the others is not overused, since the lap average is higher than that of the Tourist Trophy !
By completing the 7,401 miles (11.910 km) of the Dundrod Circuit in 3 minutes and 18.870 seconds last year, Bruce Anstey and his Suzuki had maintained an average of 133.977 mph (215.615 km / h), against McGuiness "only" 131.578 mph. on the Isle of Man TT course.
But the Ulster event impresses above all by the incredible battles that the pilots engage in: unlike the Tourist Trophy where the competitors are carefully released every ten seconds, the start of this "GP" run near Belfast is done in groups. !
On Saturday, the Superbike category was made up of three groups: only 20th after qualifying on a wet track, New Zealander Bruce Anstey quickly escaped in the dry from his second group and took advantage of a road cleared to beat – against the clock – his opponents in the leading group! Guy Martin (read) and Keith Amor therefore offered a superb battle at the forefront … in vain !
"After the first Superbike race where I focused only on winning on the road, I knew what I had to do during the last race: watch my signage", explains the unfortunate Guy Martin..
In the second Superbike race, the n ° 7 rider of Team Suzuki Relentless set out to dominate not only his opponents from the first group but also those from the second and third! "Nobody remembers a loser," the friendly Guy will note at the end of the race, "but everyone remembers the last winner of the year, so it’s a good job for the whole team".
The "Poupou du Titi" won on this occasion a sixth victory at the Ulster GP and notably equaled a certain John Surtees. But the very young Michael Dunlop (read) is even stronger by winning three races last Saturday: both in the Supersport and the Superstock !
With this hat-trick, the Street Sweep team driver (on ZX-10R in SBK and STK category, and on R6 in SSP) made a remarkable entry into the Ulster GP list. There he joined his father Robert, winner nine times on the Northern Irish route, as well as his uncle Joey, "record man" with 24 successes. !
