It’s all the hell, my darling: Isle of Man residents would like to have the historic Tourist Trophy route altered to avoid traffic jams caused by their main road being closed during the famous motorcycle race… Shocking ?

This rather surprising – and not at all depressing – information comes from our colleagues in Manx, who echo the comments made by Andrew Jessopp: the leader of the parish of Braddan expresses the resentment of residents against the obligation to take a detour around their home during the Tourist Trophy.

The main axis of this region of the Isle of Man being part of the 60 km of the most famous road layout in the world, traffic is currently rerouted on a small road that goes from Douglas to Braddan. Problem: this temporary access is one-way, which causes major traffic jams which put the nerves of some premises to the test.

"I spoke with the Ministry of Infrastructure to suggest that they change the route of the TT," said Jessopp, referring to residents "annoyed and frustrated" by traffic jams "over an hour" during the race week each start of the month of june…

Andrew Jessopp and his parishioners would like their main road to be removed from the race route, both to avoid traffic jams and restore access to … the Snugborough shopping area. Business is business !

A route taken since 1911…

This project to divert the historic route would profoundly disrupt the legendary race, which has taken the same road – and its 264 bends – since 1911! Modifying it would also nullify all the records made throughout its history, sometimes at the cost of the pilots’ own lives….

Not to mention that such a modification would set a precedent: the organizers of the Tourist Trophy would quickly find themselves confronted with dozens of similar requests, despite the affection of most Manxois for "their" emblematic TT.

The infrastructure ministry has so far been reluctant to a detour, promising Jessopp that a new two-way road would be built "in 2022" to replace the current one-way detour. In other words: "move on, there is a race to see!"

The local authorities are well aware of the sporting, cultural and economic significance of the Tourist Trophy: the large number of spectators, the teams and the media keep the accommodation and catering running as fast as the engines in the Snaeffel Montain. !
