Norton is back at the Tourist Trophy: here’s some news that will please fans of motorcycle racing and English motorcycles! The British manufacturer Norton has indeed decided to reconnect with its glorious sporting past by committing to the 2012 edition of the TT which will take place from Saturday May 26 to Friday June 8 on the Isle of Man..

Spondon chassis, Aprilia engine

In 1949, the year of the creation of the world championship of the Grand Prix of speed, Harold Daniell gives Norton his first victory in 500 cc on the Isle of Man. Subsequently, authentic motorcycle sport legends will drive a Norton to the first step of the podium in the premier class: Geof Duke (1950 and 1951) and the great Mike Hailwood (1961).

Aware of the value of this heritage, Stuart Garner, the British businessman who decided to relaunch Norton Motorcycles (read in particular), decided to re-enter a Norton at the start of the most famous motorcycle race disputed on road.

The manufacturer based in Donington has thus spent the last 18 months refining his project: to enter the "TT" 2012 in the Superbike category..

Since the news is not sporty enough to shine during such an event, it is at the controls of an unprecedented Norton that rider Ian Mackman will take the start: this bike developed specifically for the TT is built around a chassis developed by Spondon and a 999.6 cc V4 snatched from … an Aprilia RSV4 (read our).

But the fans can be reassured: this astonishing technical choice – especially from a manufacturer so attached to its heritage – would only be a step !

"For the engine, the choice fell on an Aprilia V4 unit while waiting for a rotary engine in the future, a project dear to Stuart Garner", assures Norton who is openly eyeing MotoGP, where many of the brand new CRTs ( Claiming Rule Team) precisely use the Aprilia V4 (read in particular our).

A podium for Norton’s return to "Titi" ?

In terms of peripherals, this "Norton-Spondon-Aprilia" prepared for the Tourist Trophy is equipped with Ôhlins suspensions, Brembo brakes, BST carbon wheels and Dunlop tires: enough to run for the podium which the manufacturer openly dreams of. ?

"A place on the podium would be an immense satisfaction for the brand, even if the challenge is high given the means available to Norton today", assures the English brand before specifying that this project was financed "by grants from partners "and not by" one of the funds of the company so as not to delay the production planning of the Commandos ".
