Superpole Lausitzring: Davies passes the second in Germany
Contested on a partially wet track, the WSBK Superpole session back in Germany was particularly delicate. Chaz Davies did better than his little comrades and signs his second pole in 2016. Sylvain Guintoli is ninth.
Back after two months of absence, the World Superbike has reserved a very difficult Superpole session for the riders: perfect yesterday, the track conditions at the Lausitzring were clearly complicated this Saturday due to heavy morning rains, followed by rare sunny spells….
The fastest driver on hard tires ahead of Savadori, Sykes, Guintoli and Rea at the start of SP2 (Superpole final session), Chaz Davies finally flew past the end of the session, going alone under the 1 ’38 mark (see all chronos at the bottom of the article). The Ducati n ° 7 wins his second pole after Imola … where he had chained on two victories !
Relatively discreet at the end of the qualifying session, Tom Sykes obtained second place on the German grid, completing the 4265 meters of the Lausitzring only one eighth of a second slower (!) Than the Welsh poleman … and almost a second faster than the third man !
After a first spotting lap behind his teammate Michael van den Mark, Nicky Hayden stayed in his box for a long time. The "Kentucky Legend" only emerged in the last minutes to set an incredible time, just under 1 ’39. Will the Honda n ° 69 be able to repeat its feat in the race (s) ?
The second row will be led this afternoon and tomorrow by the impressive Lorenzo Savadori, the fastest driver on the first day (yesterday, Friday) when he had never put the wheels of his RSV4 on the German circuit! The n ° 32 was in the lead of SP2 six minutes from the end. Will it shine as much during the two germnic races ?
The last driver to score points in each race this season, Jordi Torres qualifies in fifth position, a few thousandths of a second behind the Italian rookie. The "Spanish Elvis" is above all ahead of the 2015 world champion and 2016 leader, Jonathan Rea (who else?).
The "Number One" of the discipline, who took part in private practice at the Lausitzring this summer but on his personal ZX-10R, had to go through the perilous Superpole 1, disputed on a slightly more humid and tricky track … Finally sixth in SP2, Rea will have to spit in the gloves to get back on – beat? – his best enemy in the championship and teammate, Tom Sykes (46 points gap in the provisional).
In the Top 5 during most of SP2, Sylvain Guintoli must ultimately be content with the ninth fastest time. Our 2014 champion, back after five months of convalescence, will have to fight to join the outposts in the race, also coveted by Leon Camier and Davide Giugliano posted in front of him on the German grid..
The native, Markus Reiterberger, was second in front of his home crowd on Friday but he failed to find the right tempo this afternoon. The 2015 German Superbike champion (IDM) will place his BMW in eleventh place on "his" grid, just behind Van den Mark’s Honda # 60.
Alex Lowes was one of the many drivers to fall yesterday and damaged his right shoulder. Declared fit to race by the medical team this morning, the English No.22 – replacing his compatriot Bradley Smith in MotoGP his last two weeks and next weekend again! – did not leave the pits and inherits twelfth place.
A few minutes earlier, SP1 was the scene of an intense battle between three top drivers to win the two tickets for SP2: Jonathan Rea, Davide Giugliano and Xavi Fores took turns at the top of the timesheet….
Finally, Fores had to be content with third time in SP1, synonymous with 13th place on the starting grid, this afternoon in the first heat and tomorrow in second. The 2014 IDM champion will start ahead of Swiss Dominic Schmitter and Spaniard Roman Ramos.
Anthony West, who rides again on Sylvain Barrier’s ZX-10R, will lead in sixth place ahead of Josh Brookes and Alex de Angelis, victim of a small forward crash in SP1. Scassa, Vizziello, Szkopek, Abraham, Sebestyen and Al Sulaiti will follow. Races to follow live on MNC: stay connected !
