The eighth round of the 2016 World SBK took place this weekend in Misano, Italy. To complete our near-live reports, here are the statements of the Superbike riders at the end of their two Italian races.

WSBK 1st Round Declarations

Site readers – who, as everyone knows, are a little more fortunate than the others – have already been able to experience Saturday and Sunday, almost live, the unfolding of the Mondial Superbike and Supersport races on the Misano circuit (for latecomers, read, then).

Find below the statements of the drivers who distinguished themselves on Saturday during the first round, and on the following page the statements of those who animated the second WSBK race on Sunday. Honor to -double – winner !

Jonathan Rea, 1st:
"Getting to the top step of the podium was clearly our goal here. We also want to sign the double, so we’re halfway there. Honestly, it was a little surprising to see how much we struggled at the end of the race because our pace was very fast yesterday at the end of our longest outing, we were turning in small 1’36. I’m not sure how much the increase in track temperature affected us today, but it looks like it was important. We have to ask ourselves tonight to figure out how to improve. Tom was strong in some parts of the track, we were strong in others, but overall our lap times were pretty similar. I’m really happy to win again !"

Tom Sykes, 2nd:
"We were almost there, but not completely … Overall, I’m relatively happy with our performance and consistency, but I’m just a little disappointed that we didn’t win because I think Marcel and Danilo and all the guys worked hard. We wasted some time yesterday, but we made up for it today. We had a good set-up so I must be happy. I just couldn’t make a clean pass in the last two laps. I tried, but couldn’t get the front of the bike to the correct position".

"We finished less than a tenth of a second from the victory and we must take some positive points. We were fast and consistent in the last few races and we came to a completely different circuit, where Jonathan has always been really strong and has won in the past. We could win the race. We just didn’t manage to take the right line on the last lap".

Michael van den Mark, 3rd:
"This is the result we needed, I’m so happy to be back on the podium! We were pretty quick throughout the weekend, but certainly not fast enough. Yesterday afternoon, however, I was finally satisfied with the tuning of the bike. Superpole 2 didn’t go as planned but I got really lucky in the second corner, right after the start of the race: I was playing it a little cautious, so when the guys in front of me fell I was able to gain places. Davide and Nicky’s falls were like warnings to me, because the feeling with the front was really not that great. Jonathan and Tom escaped but I kept my head in the handlebars. Towards the end I could see that Chaz was coming back really strong, but my pace was excellent in the last laps. I welcome this podium with open arms and look forward to tomorrow: if we can improve the feeling up front, then we will be ready for another great race.".

Chaz Davies, 4th:
"We had a bit of a bumpy start as we were pushed off the track. But that’s the kind of thing that happens during races, especially after a complicated Superpole session. Unfortunately, the rear started to push a lot after the qualifying tire was put on, which changed the handling of the bike. Anyway, I’m really happy with our pace during the race. The climb back through the peloton was really fun, it’s just a shame that we missed the podium. Tomorrow is another day, and with a clean start we’ll have another chance".

Jordi Torres, 5th:
"This morning in practice we worked well, confirming our good pace. In Superpole, we had a small problem which unfortunately cost me a lot of time. In the race, I was there in the middle of the incident, but luckily managed to avoid the chaos. After that I made a nice comeback, focusing on my own performance. I’m a little disappointed because we don’t yet have the pace we want – or deserve – but the data collected today can help us improve for tomorrow. The bike runs great, there are just a few aspects to work on in order to reduce motorcycle movement and improve tire performance over race distance".

Markus Reiterberger, 6th:
"We went back to yesterday’s setup for the Superpole and I was feeling good. I was fifth with the race tire, but I suffered a small crash with the qualifying tire which obviously affected my fast lap. I had time to do an extra lap, but I was not very comfortable with the front. During the race, I found myself in traffic when the riders fell at the start. So I wasted a lot of time. Then I managed to get some good lap times but I know we can be faster. Sixth place is good considering what happened, but we have to do better. I’m wasting a lot of time on the leaders because I’m not yet comfortable with the front of the bike. I still want to thank the team because they did a very good job this weekend".

Niccolo Canepa, 7th:
"I was really frustrated after the Superpole (the first phase SP1, NDLR) because I had no luck with the red flag and I couldn’t do a single lap on the qualifying tires. Starting from 15th didn’t help us, of course, but I tried to attack from the start and got off to a very good start. At the end of the first lap, I was already tenth and my pace was settled. The bike was good until the end and on the last five or six laps it was very fast compared to the others. I am very satisfied with the results today, even if with a better position in qualifying we could have fought closer to the front lines. It’s very good to finish seventh in my first race, to be the best Italian at home and to get this result for Yamaha in my ".

Leon Camier, 8th:
"I got caught at the start when Savadori fell and Fores crashed into him. I think I hit Savadori with my boot when we were in the gravel because my boot was badly damaged. It also caused me some trouble during the race. Afterwards I had to attack hard, try to overtake the others and my return was good because I had a very good pace. I think tomorrow we’ll have the beat to do something right".
