WorldSBK 2019: the unique electronic box arrives … in Supersport !
From the Portimao event this year, the Supersport world championship teams will be able to install the MKE7 electronic box, produced by the company MecTronik, on their motorcycles. They will have every interest in doing so, because this ECU will become mandatory in 2019… Explanations.
The Superbike Commission met at the Barcelona circuit on Friday June 15, on the sidelines of, to "clarify the regulations, as deemed necessary"…
Senior officials from the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM), the Manufacturers’ Association (MSMA) and Dorna (promoter of MotoGP and WorldSBK) have made two changes to the regulations for the 2018 Superbike and Supersport World Championships.
- WSBK 2018 Rules :
- Interview Daniel Carrera :
- WSBK 2018 Rules :
- Electronics in WorldSBK :
The first concerns the starting procedure: following the, marked – notably, but not only! – by the stroller session of Marc Marquez whose RCV had suddenly stalled on the starting grid, the "Gentils Organisateurs" of the World Superbike wanted to review the sporting regulations of the WorldSBK (see text below).
The "G.O." also took advantage of their meeting to modify the technical regulations of their intermediate category … Whispered for two years in the "queen" Superbike category and effective for two years in the "imperial" MotoGP category, the adoption of a single electronic box will take place next year in World Supersport !
Thanks to the MKE7 control unit designed and developed by the Italian company MecTrocnik – and installed on the official of Lucas Mahias, our 2017 world champion -, Rezso Bulcsu, Franck Vayssie and Paul Duparc (FIM), Takanao Tsubouchi (MSMA), Gregorio Lavilla and Daniel Carrera (Dorna) hope to relaunch a spectacular championship, certainly, but become mono-brand … or almost ?
Thanks to his news, Yamaha won the first seven victories of the season … including three with Jules Cluzel! Deprived of its champion Kenan Sofuoglu, Kawasaki has not been on the podium once for the moment. Ditto for Honda whose benchmark team in the discipline, PTR, can no longer make it into the Top 5…
As for the Profile Racing team, they simply decided to get rid of their 2015 British Supersport champion’s Triumph at the end of May, just a few days before their home event! Luke Stapleford, fifth at Phillip Island and Assen riding his Daytona 675, rides from Donington Park on a nicknamed "Roxy". Even the English deny their "super" production !?
Only MV Agusta and his top driver manage to shine: Raffaele de Rosa has just chained four third places in a row. But the n ° 3 (on the fairing, but fifth in the provisional) knows that he is on an ejection saddle: the Varese company will leave the WorldSSP (and WorldSBK) at the end of the year, heading to the Moto2 !
The teams which plan to compete next year in World Supersport will be authorized to use the 2019 box from the Portuguese test of 2018, in order to "break in" … and get a little ahead of the teams who play currently the title and will probably change electronics this fall ?! Case to follow on MNC…
WorldSBK Regulatory Changes 2018-2019
Sporting regulations
Minor changes to the starting procedure have been approved to clarify the situation when, after the warm-up lap, a driver stalls on the grid or experiences other difficulties. The rider must stay on his motorcycle and raise his arm.
Attempting to restart a motorcycle on the grid is not allowed. Under the supervision or assistance of a marshal, the driver must leave the grid and return to the pit lane, where his mechanics can assist him. This clarification of the departure procedure takes effect immediately..
Technical regulations
The Superbike Commission has decided to allow all teams in the 2018 FIM Supersport World Championship to use the MKE7 Electronic Control Unit (ECU) from the Portimão race.
From the 2019 season, the use of the MKE7 ECU will become unique (and standardized), and an engine speed limitation common to all manufacturers will be applied.
