WorldSBK adds Argentina to 2018-2020 tours
Of the 13 World Superbike events in 2017, only four are contested outside Europe. However, the organizers have decided to add an exotic touch to the next three seasons with Argentina, on a circuit that remains to be built…. Explanations.
Australia, Thailand, the United States and Qatar: these are the four countries hosting the Superbike World Championship outside of Europe this year. Because no offense to the "Brexiters", Great Britain remains geographically linked to Europe….
In order to assert its planetary dimension, the World Superbike has been trying for several seasons to invest new lands, without much success. The readers of Site – who, as everyone knows, have a little more RAM than the others – remember that the and have been successively erased from the shelves, while the was ultimately never part of it..
Far from being discouraged, the WorldSBK organizers persisted … and have just signed a three-year contract with another far-off country: Argentina, which was hosting MotoGP last weekend! And it is besides on the sidelines that the agreement was formalized.
While the Intercontinental Circus made its big comeback in Argentina on the new Termas de Rio Hondo circuit in 2013, the "world" Superbike will travel to South America for the very first time in the future! – Villicum circuit from next year, in 2018.
"Designed by Argentinian architect Leonardo Stella, the circuit is located in the region of San Juan, not far from the city of Albardón. The works started in October 2016 and will allow Argentina to become the 26th country to receive a World Superbike Championship event ", tell us the organizers.
The government of the province of San Juan and the OSD Group, which have proposed the addition of this event to the 2018 WorldSBK calendar, hope to obtain the homologation of the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) this year. To follow on the Site: stay connected !
New WSBK event in Argentina: statements
Sergio Unac (Governor of San Juan):
"This is a project that will position San Juan at the heart of sport; the best categories of motorcycling and motorsport around the world will discover the magnificent surroundings of the Villicum circuit. In addition, a hotel will be nearby: the old hotel de La Laja. We are also in discussion for the construction of a hotel in front of the circuit, an essential element allowing the circuit to be placed at the highest international level ".
Carmelo Ezpeleta (CEO Dorna Group):
"Without a doubt, this is very good news. Knowing that Argentina will host a WorldSBK round is a big step forward. Argentina’s presence on the calendar of the two most important motorcycling championships in the world underlines the scope of the passion of this country which has a deep history with motorsports ".
Orly Terranova (CEO OSD Group):
"I am really delighted that the new Villicum circuit – which has already received a first approval from the FIM – allows us to add a new international event in Argentina such as WorldSBK. We also think this is the perfect opportunity for Argentina to have one or more of its representatives among the pilots, as this will present itself as an excellent platform both for the country and for Latin America. Without a doubt, this new circuit – placed on the legendary Route 40 – will have a positive impact on the Cuyo region by diversifying, in particular, tourism in the province of San Juan ".
Daniel Carrera (Executive Director of WorldSBK):
"We are very proud that the government of San Juan has chosen the WorldSBK to develop the economic activity of the circuit and the province. In recent years, the WorldSBK has been present in several destinations around the world like the United States. United, Thailand, Australia and Qatar, where events have developed with excellent results. The Villicum circuit presents itself as a high level facility with an exciting layout that will be well received by our paddock as well as by all fans of our sport in Argentina ".
