Baz has just smashed the Assen track record and won his first pole position in World Superbike! Leaving the pits later, his opponents were surprised by the rain. Guintoli and Sykes complete the first line.
Bazooka did well to draw his qualifying tire very early in Superpole 2, this afternoon in the Netherlands: the n ° 76 of the official Kawasaki team was able to hit a record time (1 ‘34.357) just before a heavy downpour. do not destroy the hopes of their rivals.
Owned by Jonathan Rea since 2010, the benchmark time in the WSBK category at Assen now belongs to our "Green Giant" … Casually, Loris has improved the mark of "JR" by more than half a second, and his – registered this weekend in the third free session – of a second and a half !
Fifth on the starting line a year ago, Loris had finished fifth and then third. Installed on pole this year, he is clearly aiming for the podium and his first step, even – or especially ?! – if the rain falls again tomorrow…
Waited all day, the rain did not show up this afternoon until four minutes before the end of the second Superpole session (SP2) which serves to establish the classification of the twelve best drivers on the grid. The white flags – warning of a change in grip – were also released at the right time for Baz…
While the "Snow Cheetah" – Loris the Savoyard sports a cheetah on his helmet … – quietly transported his official ZX-10R to the pits, Sylvain Guintoli was battling on his factory RSV4 to dispossess his compatriot of the Superpole.
Unfortunately for the n ° 50 Aprilia, big drops prevented it from completing its fast lap … Very fast even, since "Guinters" was ahead of Baz at the midpoint of a few hundredths of a second certainly, but which allows to make the difference in WSBK !
and winner of the first round last year, Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) was also unable to fully defend his chances at the end of the session. The world champion and current leader in the provisional (4 points ahead of Baz!) Must be content with third place on the Dutch grid.
A survivor of Superpole 1, Marco Melandri (Aprilia Racing) is much more satisfied, not to say relieved, by his fourth place. The Italian rider will start in front of the local and great stage specialist Jonathan Rea (his Honda Pata team is based not far from Assen), and the swift Davide Giugliano (Ducati SBK).
Even more impressive than the official Ducati n ° 34, the n ° 59 Niccolo Canepa hoists his 1199 Panigale Evo (Ducati Althea) to the top of the third row! The only representative of the Evo class to have participated in SP2, he will start in front of the GSX-R1000 of Eugene Laverty and Alex Lowes (Suzuki Voltcom Crescent).
Toni Elias (Aprilia Red Devils Roma), Leon Haslam (Honda Pata) and Chaz Davies (Ducati SBK) will settle tomorrow – at 10:30 am for the first round, 13:10 for the second – in that order on the three places in the fourth row.
Beaten by Davies and Melandri in SP1, Leon Camier posts the BMW Evo of team Italia – and Sylvain Barrier, normally! – in thirteenth position on the grid. The fifth row is completed by two other Evo machines: the Bimota of Ayrton Badovini (Bimota Alstare) and the official Kawasaki of David Salom.
Sixth row will be placed the other BB3 of the Alstare team: the n ° 2 of Christian Iddon, ahead of the official MV Agusta F4RR – in "Superbike" configuration, it – driven by Claudio Corti and the Kawasaki Evo of the French team MRS by Jeremy Guarnoni.
South African Sheridan Morais places his own ZX-10R Evo (Kawasaki Iron Brain Grillini) at the top of the seventh row while Luca Scassa (Kawasaki Pedercini Evo) takes twentieth place. The experienced Michel Fabrizio, missed out on SP1 because 222 thousandths of a second slower than Jeremy Guarnoni in the fourth qualifying session, completes the seventh place (Kawasaki Iron Brain Grillini Evo).
Alessandro Andreozzi (Kawasakai Pedercini Evo), Imre Toth (BMW Toth) and Luca Scassa will start tomorrow from the eighth row. They will be ahead of guest driver Kevin Bos (Honda) and the two members of the Hero EBR team: Geoff May and Aaron Yates. Peter Sebestyen did not qualify the second S1000R of team Toth.
