Jonathan Rea has just doubled the bet this afternoon at Imola by winning the second WSBK race ahead of Chaz Davies and Sylvain Guintoli. The Honda Pata rider takes the opportunity to take control of the Superbike World Championship !
Second Superbike race
Jonathan Rea and his Fireblade take off again perfectly from their first place on the grid and leads Guintoli and Melandri on Aprilia, Giugliano on Ducati and Sykes on Kawasaki, their teammates Davies and Baz, Laverty and Lowes on Suzuki, Elias on Aprilia, etc..
Giugliano is very aggressive – as always! – and easily get rid of Melandri … Guintoli can be worried! Baz doubles Davies before completing the first lap of the race but the Welshman passes our compatriot at the start of the 2nd lap !
The two Leons – Haslam and Camier – get off the track under Alta’s braking a few seconds apart but fortunately reach the track smoothly … Ahead, the Northern Irish "JR" begins to give company to French Guintoli and to the Italian Giugliano.
The 3rd loop is animated by Sykes who surprises Melandri on the brakes after the short stretch at the exit of Acque Minerale … Davies and Baz are not to be outdone and are fighting bitterly for sixth place, then for fifth place occupied by Melandri, really not on her plate today.
In front, Rea carefully applies the same method as in the first heat: fleeing in the lead very early to control the second half of the race. Guintoli and Giugliano may well whip their Italian motorcycles, they cannot keep up with the hellish pace of the Honda.
More than four seconds behind the leader, Sykes tries to get closer to the podium and takes Davies … and Baz with him in the aspiration of the Ducati! The three men turn at the same pace as Rea and come back to Giugliano shortly before the halfway point.
Tom overtook Davide on braking in the Alta chicane and took advantage of a touchdown between Davide and Chaz to slightly distance his two opponents. Unlike Sykes and Davies, Loris Baz is slow to find the opening on Giugliano, probably disappointed to be overwhelmed from all sides !
In the 11th lap, "Johnny" Rea increased his lead to more than three seconds over Guintoli. The Frenchie is two seconds ahead of Sykes and Davies. Baz manages to overtake Giugliano now targeted – from very far, about seven seconds – by Laverty, Haslam and Elias. Melandri is in 10th place.
In the next loop, Sykes suddenly devours half of the lead Guintoli had … Davies is still in the wake of the "Number One" in the category and Baz tries to close the gap of a second which separates it from the Ducati n ° 7.
Five laps from the checkered flag, "Major Tom" finds himself in the wheel of "Guinters". “Chazie” is on their heels, and “Bazooka” pulls out the big attack! As in the first heat, Jonathan Rea cares little about all this heckling and continues his own race, five seconds ahead…
Sylvain Guintoli manages to outrun Tom Sykes on the 15th lap, so much so that Chaz Davies decides to take matters in hand: the Welsh driver overtakes the English Ninja n ° 1 in the final chicane! One lap later, Chaz takes second place in the Villeneuve sequence.
A small second behind Guintoli, Sykes hears the 4-cylinder of his teammate Baz growl louder and louder! Will the n ° 76 dare to attack his teammate in the last two laps? … No opportunity presents itself in the 18th lap.
On the last lap, however, Loris jumped at the first opportunity given to him to overtake Tom and stole fourth place from the world champion, a place he kept until the finish line. Guintoli precedes him by less than a second and joins Rea and Davies on the podium.
Thanks to his masterful double, Jonathan Rea jumped from fourth to first place in the provisional: the Honda rider totaled 139 points, against 135 for Sykes, 123 for Guintoli and 119 for Baz … The fight between the four strong men of the championship will continue in two weeks, with the British, in Donington Park.
