Supermot ‘Dorsoduro vintage 2009
After the Shiver, Aprilia offers its 90 ° vtwin in a supermotard version with the SMV 750 Dorsoduro "Dos Dur" in Italian. Elegant mix of styles, mixing sporty trail and supermot with a very specific face, the Dorsoduro displays a physique combining curves and straight sizes: hairy. Aggressive, this Supermot ’is characterized by a short caster angle and greater suspension travel. If compared to the roadster, the twin lost 3 horses – 92 horses -, it gained in return for the torque, much lower: 8.4 m.kg at 4,500 rpm against 8.25 m.kg at 7,250 rpm / min. Suddenly, the Dorsoduro is placed in direct competition against the KTM 690 SM and the Ducati Hypermotard…
Discovery
Well designed, the Dorsoduro mixes the curves of the saddle with the taut lines of the exhaust line under the saddle and the headlight with its specific V. If the front end is already cool, the rear is simply unique with the double flattened exhaust line surrounding the tail light and the shark streaks on the pots. We then notice the perimeter frame interwoven with a tubular steel trellis of the most beautiful effect. Supermoto style, we finally note the notched footrests and hand guards. Up close the finish is remarkable and we like to run our hands over the beast as on the neck of a horse. In the saddle ?
In the saddle
At 870 mm, the saddle is high, very high, too high a limit for the pilot of 1.70 m who will painfully put the end of a single foot on the ground. On the other hand, the saddle is thin and facilitates the climb without too many acrobatics. Despite its 186 kilos, the Dorsoduro then appears very light and suddenly builds confidence.
We find here forms of counter close to the Shiver 750 and the Mana 850 with an analog tachometer without red zone indicated and a digital screen: partial trip, totalizer, clock, engine temperature, stopwatch, consumption. instantaneous and average, maximum speed, and always the indication of the driving profile – Sport, Rain, Road – typical of the Ride-by-wire introduced by Aprilia.
The wide, flat, curved handlebars fall well under the hands and the arm, feet and hands triangle is straight and natural. The distance between the brake and clutch levers can be adjusted.
Contact
Rhaaa…. that hoarse noise. The Dorsoduro captivates from contact with its hairy sound. The bike reacts instantly to the throttle and the first turns of the wheel require a little smoothness so as not to go into an immediate wheelie! apart immediately! The box is soft and precise.
In the city
The Dorsoduro slips everywhere, without difficulty, aided by the lever arm of the handlebars, its lightness and a torque available from 2,000 rpm. In fact, it encourages you to turn the handle constantly to play, again and again. The tight 4.30 turning radius finishes off an easy picture in town for the supermot. Despite the twin, she agrees to wind up on a net of gas to distill her sensations…. The only difficulty then lies in complying with the speed limits….
Highway
The Dorsoduro quickly sets off on the motorway but quickly admits its limits. High speeds are not his forte with protection that proves ineffective. However this is not his favorite playground.
Departmental
The Dorsoduro finds its ideal element on departmental roads. With a precise nose gear, it fits easily into turns. The enormous lever arm then allows you to do almost anything without having to think about it. In fact, if the twin is felt below 2,000 rpm, it is very available from 3,000 rpm and allows you to really propel yourself from one turn to another without waiting to climb the towers. At this rate, the executive follows very well to withstand the constraints. These are at the limit the rather flexible rear suspensions compared to the hard front fork, which can be problematic when you push the machine to its limits at a very fast pace..
The thin saddle makes it possible to be particularly mobile on the bike and to counter-steer very much supermoto. All this confirms his desires and his ability to attack on small roads.
It should be noted that the “Sport”, “Touring” and “Rain” modes play a predominant role on the machine, perhaps even more than on the other models by benefiting, with a predilection for the Sport mode on small roads, and Touring in the city. We reserve the "Rain" mode for days of rain and fatigue because the Dorsoduro appears to be anemic in this mode..
Braking
Braking is provided by petal Braking discs pinched by four-piston radials. The result is brutal. The Dorsoduro brakes hard, if not very hard, especially from the front. And if the first few millimeters of the grip don’t seem to operate, all the power comes in one fell swoop with a bite that stops the bike in any swing. It’s very powerful, even brutal … especially when you don’t expect it. Suddenly, even when driving fast, it is better to be satisfied with two fingers in order to limit surprises. And if you want to take the lever with one hand, the braking is aggressive. That said, with a little practice, it can be mastered very well.
Consumption
The small tank holds just 12 liters, enough to cover an average of 200 km, depending on the – often muscular – ride the Dorsoduro inspires. During the test the average consumption was 5.4 liters.
Comfort
The saddle turns out to be welcoming and allows you to go on a day of driving without fatigue, with comfort aided by suspensions that erase the defects of the road..
Duo
The Dorsoduro is delivered in France with its passenger footrests…. but not in Italy. There is no handle, nor really much room for the passenger. It is still possible to take one but frankly, it’s high and not ideal.
Convenient
There is no room under the saddle.
The kickstand is lifted back…. In fact, we look for it at the beginning before realizing that we have to lift the leg back to hook it and rest it on the ground. At least it doesn’t risk getting in the way even at extreme angles. It then folds up easily.
Conclusion
The Aprilia Dorsoduro has succeeded in the supermot transformation by offering a machine that is fun, fun and enjoyable every day, both in the city and on small roads. The engine is a treat and the overall behavior particularly playful. The overall look is the icing on the cake of success, perhaps even the best Aprilia version of its twin 750. And to make no mistake, at 8,849 € the Dorsoduro is the cheapest of the big supermot ’.
