MOTORRAD presents: MBS 600 E62

Light wheel

Wrapped in the light and airy MBS tubular frame chassis, a souped-up, 113 hp Kawasaki ZZ-R 600 engine sets new standards in the super sporty middle class.

With extremely little weight, packed behind a graceful silhouette, Heiko Heinemeyer chose the path of least resistance with his own MBS construction. “It is true that building power bikes with abnormal performance is currently fashionable, but our goal is a bit different: the handling of a 250 paired with the performance of a 900,” says the inventor of his concept of the supersport motorcycle. Wish or reality?
The measured values speak for themselves: 258 km / h top speed – faster than the 125 hp Honda CBR 900 RR. In a sprint up to 200 km / h 10.9 seconds pass – the MBS 600 remains close on the Fireblade’s heels. Impressive values, no doubt. However, the MBS played the choker during the test drives on the Nurburgring GP track. With the precision of a CNC milling machine, the MBS sails around corners in razor-sharp radii and bends into an inclined position without delay on command. In the fast passages, where every serial athlete can only be forced from one lean angle to the other with tight steering commands, the MBS 600 works through the alternating curves as if by magic. The background: The frame and steering geometry, which is extremely manageable, and the racing-style front wheel that weighs 53 percent of the weight.
For those who are in a hurry, the spring / damper set-up should be a step harder when chasing record laps. “We deliberately chose the compromise between road and supersport in order to guarantee sufficient comfort and driving stability on bad roads,” says Tuner Heinemeyer, explaining his suspension set-up.
Ultimately, the MBS 600 tested by MOTORRAD is to be brought to the general public as an approved small series, which is why the tiny headlights and the still missing alternator have to be replaced with TÜV-compliant components.
D.If it stayed with the small series, the price alone will ensure that: The premium racer, which is handcrafted down to the last detail and only completed with the finest accessories, costs 58,800 marks. A masterpiece in itself: the brazed frame with triangular swing arm made of chrome-molybdenum tubes. Drawn after the pattern of the Dutch chassis guru Nicco Bakker, Heiko Heinemeyer, contrary to the general trend towards the uniform aluminum chassis, prefers the functional, classic and yet light steel construction (frame with swing arm 16.5 kilograms, for comparison: around 19 kilograms Suzuki’s GSX-R 600). But when it comes to frame construction, many roads lead to Rome, as the technology story from page 36 shows.
