The superb MV-Agusta F4 is equipped with a new 4-cylinder. The old one lacked a little trunk at low revs, the new promises to be nasty. It uses the same technology with, among other things, radial valves, has been tested for 2 years, and is compact enough to fit in the same chassis as the F4.. The block outputs 166 hp and over 11 mkg of torque. Enough to make this motorcycle a missile with a dummy plastic. Apart from the boiler which includes nearly 70% of new parts, the differences with the 750 are minimal: new colors, a bigger fork, a slight increase in the wheelbase, new half-handlebars, more efficient damping, a higher bubble, and a price that will twist you. This is relative, because the 1000 only costs 2,000 € than the 750. We find the same trellis frame, the same brakes, the same rims, and the same stroke of the pencil that made the F4 enter the Hall of Fame of 2 wheels. Maybe we would have liked the 1000 to have more of its own identity, but whatever, MV-Agusta’s machines are eternal !
We could admire it for hours, we would never tire of it. But the desire to share its scent will only grow. Mounted in the saddle, we will not be surprised at the Spartan comfort. An Italian thoroughbred has nothing of the tenderness of a Japanese. Strongly tilted forward, the pilot will have to guide the beast with conviction. The MV is hot-blooded and demands that her lover be up to the task. A fan of Ducati 916/996 would not be disoriented. Locked on the bike and battered by the frankly stiff damping, we take advantage of a machine of formidable precision. Even if its raison d’être is strongly oriented track, the F4 handles with joy on the small roads. Once we have made our mark, we can open wide. After a slight roughness at the bottom of the tachometer, the mechanics give big muscle in mid-revs.
The weakness of the 750 is gone but not the slight vibrations. Remember that MV-Agusta is a small manufacturer, which does not have the means to design mechanics as perfect (and polished) as the Japanese. The level reached is however remarkable, and even more. The operation of the box is now almost perfect. More available, the engine also shows impressive power but with a certain progressiveness. We do not find the feeling of having a box of grenades under the ass as with the Kawa ZX-10R but all the same a well-screwed mill. On paper, the block of the MV is not the most powerful of the last 1000 sports. But once on the dyno, it turns out that he’s the one who spits out the most watts at the rear wheel. Due to a certain inertia of the intake butterflies, the gases are a little tricky to dose. But think about it by getting drunk on the magnificent melody offered by the famous organ pipes of the exhaust ?
Is all this reasonable? Certainly not, but we don’t stop a rolling dream !
