MZ 1000 S
Long-running
Tea MZ 1000 S is not a real trade fair innovation. But now the long-announced future flagship of the Saxon motorcycle manufacturer with a newly designed two-cylinder should finally be ready for series production.
Two years ago, MZ presented the MZ 1000 S at the Intermot. But anyone who asked the dealer afterwards was always put off. Now it should actually be so far. A first pre-series is currently rolling off the assembly line; the Saxons want to deliver the first 1000 S to customers in January. They get a two-cylinder of a different kind. In contrast to the 1000cc V-Twins of the Japanese and Italian competitors, the Zschopauers rely on two cylinders arranged side by side, inclined 40 degrees forward (see MOTORRAD 18/2002). The engine with two overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and injection corresponds to the current state of two-wheel technology and, with 115 hp, should ensure adequate performance.
Due to the fact that the engine design, which is less extreme than the super sports car competition with a 96 millimeter bore and 69 millimeter stroke, is more geared towards torque than high peak performance, according to Marketing Director Carl Schmitt, the MZ is suitable for a wide range of uses: »From a one-day race training to a holiday tour lasting several weeks The 1000 S can be used with a pillion passenger. ”And the environment shouldn’t be neglected either. With a regulated catalytic converter, the twin is equipped for future pollution standards.
With the chassis, MZ also took a different path than the competition. Two steel tubes made of high-quality chrome-molybdenum steel connect the control head with the swing arm bearing. The technicians promise a comparable weight with competitive rigidity. With the advertised 210 kilograms including 20 liters of fuel, the Thousand actually plays in the top field of the two-cylinder league. An upside-down fork with a 43 millimeter guide tube diameter and a massive aluminum swing arm with upper pulls are intended to ensure driving stability.
Proven four-piston calipers from Nissin in the front wheel should decelerate the 1000 S appropriately at any time. Unconventional, however, are the three-spoke wheels made of two welded, thin-walled halves, which, according to the MZ team, result in a ten percent weight saving compared to conventional cast rims. With the 180 mm rear tire on the 5.50-inch rim, function has priority over a lush appearance.
B.One can only hope that the engine and chassis of the 1000 S will be able to withstand international competition. In terms of price, the MZ is in any case at their level with the planned 12,500 euros.
