MZ ETZ 250 fire engine motorcycle (V)

Totally normal

Florian 76 belongs to the Florsheim-Wicker fire department and can be reached on the emergency number 112. But not, as originally planned, via the two-way radio, because its metal bracket behind the seat is empty. “The battery with 5.5 ampere hours is too small for the necessary power and the alternator with 180 watts is too weak,” explains city fire inspector Heinz Caprano. Florian 76, named after the patron saint of all fire services, is an MZ ETZ 250 from NVA stocks of the former GDR and can only be reached via mobile phone. In 1993, when Heinz Caprano and his colleagues came up with the idea, they moved to the courtyard of the firefighters in Wicker in Hesse. An Offenbach dealer offered the one in plain Warsaw Pact green M.Z cheap. And in the next few weeks there were work-intensive extra shifts in addition to the voluntary service. Heinz Caprano remembers: “We immediately gave the engine an overhaul, it has been working properly since then. My boys tackled the chassis with meters of sandpaper, liters of red paint (Ral 3000) and kilometers of cables for the electrical system «. In autumn 1993 the time had come: Florian 76 was and is still operational today. Caprano: “When maneuvers in rough terrain and when quickly getting through to the scene of an accident in a congested city, our red bike is always ahead of the game.” In the meantime, 40 men at the Florsheim-Wicker fire brigade have their driving license. Caprano: “The trend is increasing, we don’t have problems with young talent.” From this point of view, Florian 76 is an all-round sensible institution.
