Presented for 3 years, the MZ 1000 S finally puts its wheels on the asphalt and no longer only in the salons. Daring bet for the German brand because it is its first big engine in 4 T – and before, MZ has never gone beyond 300 cm3 for its mills. The engine that equips the 1000 S is a parallel twin, like the Yamaha 850 TDM or TRX. It delivers the power of 117 hp – sufficient value but which in no way upsets the flagship values of the category. But in what category should this MZ be placed? The German is a priori out of place in the hotly contested family of current hypersportives: weight first; 210 kg dry, nothing to do with the drastic diet of the Japanese. Then, the position on board is not radical, some elements are even adjustable for more comfort – The wrists do not suffer so much and, something lost in modern sportswomen, the protection is there. A certain confusion remains in the philosophy of the German: as we have just seen that the 1000 S played more in the category of sports “tourism”, as certain details affirm a more “racing” orientation, such as the extractable gearbox . The engine has its own personal touch. Vigorous, it offers its power with sensations but without brutality, like a big muscle in action, with moreover a beautiful sound … which will surely disappear in France (the pots will not be the same in our jurisdiction).
The range of use turns out to be a little tight for this type of engine (approx. 3,500 rpm); thus, the box will be regularly requested. This one (pre-production machine) will have to be fine-tuned because the first 3 reports are somewhat tough. No complaints, however, for engine management. The injection was well timed and it shows. The vibrations too, they are felt – to the point that we should perhaps think of attenuating them a little. The chassis uses a frame with a tubular structure in chrome molybdenum, a good big Marzocchi inverted fork and a reinforced swingarm. The geometry of the bike remains conventional and yet, it shows a beautiful handling which makes him forget his “little” overweight. The machine is also very stable and is coupled with efficient behavior. If the braking is very largely sufficient – it will take more care of the engine braking, a little “character”. The MZ 1000 S is a good bike, which suffers only from an image deficit and a somewhat “between two chairs” position. It is not the engine to melt the clock but more to have fun like the Ducati SS. The very distinct design will convince the undecided, one way or the other.
