BMW F 700 GS successor. When the R 1200 GS is too heavy and the F 800 GS too high, something comes into play that is rarely in focus. The BMW F 700 GS is a successful model for the Munich-based company. The new one is coming soon.

Hey drives GS. And you? When it comes to the F. 700 GS, cliches inevitably come into play. Like that of the R 1200 GS riders and their partners. It is true. If the big GS is too high and too powerful and the 800 is just too high, the little sister comes into play: 19 instead of 21 inches on the front wheel, conventional fork instead of upside-down variant, shorter suspension travel and lower seat height, a little less Performance and significantly lower price: That’s how it was in the past, and that’s how it will probably be with the successor who recently drove the MOTORRAD Erlkonigjager in front of the lens. As with the new F 800 GS (we still have to speculate about the exact type designation, see MOTORRAD 9/2017), the secondary drive on the small GS moved to the left and the silencer to the right, while the unconventional tank construction in the rear frame and under the seat bench gave way to a conventional solution. That makes the new one more pleasing, while with the new tank / handlebar fairing it also looks more grown-up. Not clearly visible in the pictures, but more than likely: Like its big sister, the tubular space frame has had its day and is giving way to a cast aluminum bridge.

How much more grown up the smaller "F" has become is still something to speculate about, because the displacement is not yet finally known. It will almost certainly be the same as with the big sister, but we don’t know that either. It will be somewhere between 800 and 900 cubic centimeters, maybe exactly in the middle. On the other hand, it should be certain that the small one will sound like V2 as well as the large one. This is made possible by the 270 degree crank pin offset of the new engine, which is of course still a two-cylinder in-line.

Anyone who thinks that it would be a bit of a hassle for an oh-so-unimportant girl’s motorcycle should quickly take a look at the registration numbers from last year. The F 700 GS ranks 17th with almost 1500 pieces – immediately behind the KTM 1290 Super Duke R and directly in front of the BMW S 1000 R, the Yamaha MT-09 and other big names in the scene. In places 25 and 26? The oh-so-important BMW F 800 GS and F 800 R.
