Comparison test: Benelli Tre-K 899, KTM 990 SMT, Triumph Tiger 1050
Power fun bikes in comparison
Content of
Equipped with long suspension travel, 17-inch wheels and comfortable seating positions, three muscle-packed fun bikes roam the area: Benelly TRE-K 899, Triumph Tiger 1050 and KTM 990 SMT. Her plan: Rob as many biker souls as possible, including those who are hungry for sports.
Three strange characters roar side by side in a formation wheelie. Your front wheels seem fixed invisibly in the sky, only after a few hundred meters do the tires screeching and smoking onto the asphalt. Then the bikes drift into the following curve and disappear behind the dark green of the Black Forest. What kind of enigmatic companions are these? At first glance, they look like huge enduros, but they appear much sportier and their front rims seem too small for the terrain. Solution: The new Benelli Tre-K 899 as well as the one that was also newly developed for this year KTM 990 SMT and the Triumph Tiger 1050 let your play instinct run free. The three Europeans offer the comfort of travel enduros, i.e. long suspension travel, comfortable seating positions, good wind protection and, as accessories, extensive luggage systems. They also have 17-inch rims at the front and rear that accommodate wide, adhesive tires. Real all-rounders that only have to put up with off-road operations beyond gravel roads. A common problem with all-rounders is that they can do everything a little and nothing right. A shortcoming in this test field too?

The tiger behaves much less theatrically. Contrary to what its name suggests, the fine manners of the triplet are more reminiscent of a well-behaved domestic cat than a wild big cat. But be careful, whoever irritates the predator will feel its power, and harmless purring instantly changes to aggressive hissing. The power pack generates 90 Nm of torque at just over 2000 rpm, with 97 Nm at its peak. This means that the big cat jumps from a standing start straight into the sprint, which is actively supported by real 119 HP. First-class, how evenly the British woman develops her performance and how smoothly and just as powerfully she delivers it.
A quality that also characterizes the two-cylinder KTM. From 3000 rpm the SMT shoots greedily and climbs the speed ladder very linearly. A full and at the same time gentle V2 impact penetrates the pilot. Dreamlike! The engine accelerates gently, but it lacks the spontaneity when applying the gas, which models with the same engine have had in the recent past. With 100 Nm of torque and 121 hp, the KTM is the strongest of the test and its transmission is the gentlest to step through. The shifting travel of Benelli and Triumph is pleasantly short, but the changes are quite tricky here and there.

Due to the very comfortable adjustment of the shock absorber, there is a lot of movement in the Triumph on bumps. Even with the rebound damping almost completely closed, the Tiger swings and feels, according to a test colleague, "like an overloaded van" at. The stately big cat also leaves feathers when handling, pardon: fur! At 231.5 kilograms, it is three kilograms lighter than the Benelli, but it is much more cumbersome than the Benelli. In addition, the British woman stands up a bit when braking in an inclined position. With 212 kilograms clearly the lightest, the KTM speeds like a whirlwind around corners of all kinds. On bad roads, the only thing missing for perfect cornering is a better interaction between front and rear. Compared to the shock absorber, the fork works tighter, which means that the SMT is somewhat restless when the pace is increased on beet fields. In addition, it tends to hit the handlebars. Nevertheless, the very active SMT forms an excellent compromise between comfort and sport. And their brakes bite into the discs as hard as those of the Benelli.
