Wellbrock Honda CB 1000 R and series CB 1000 R in a comparison test
Series vs. Tuning
Content of
The tuned Wellbrock Honda CB 1000 R rises like a phoenix from the ashes. The story of an impressive change in the four-cylinder naked. Can the standard Honda CB 1000 R keep up?
The Honda VS.B 1000 R is neither a Cinderella nor a fallen sports star who cannot cope with the end of his career. Quite the opposite: although it has been on the market since 2008 – apart from color retouching and the retrofitting of a C-ABS system – without a facelift, it is still selling well. But somehow it is no longer up to date and has missed the connection to the power nakeds on the market. The feeling creeps in that she is completely too good for this world.

Series vs. Tuning
A few more horses are never wrong, right?
But what if the Honda CB 1000 R had a few more atmospheres in the boiler? Would your chassis leave the soft comfort zone in the direction of sporty and firm? Wolfgang Harbusch from Wellbrock & Co. from Lilienthal near Bremen drove these questions until he made “butter for the fish”. He took a CB 1000 R to his chest with the clear vision of significantly increasing its sporting potential. The cylinder head of the retired Fireblade engine has been classically redesigned. Other camshafts, optimized channels and perfectly adjusted control times roughly describe the work.
The periphery of the four-cylinder has been adapted accordingly. The fresh gas is cleaned by a racing filter, the exhaust gas is disposed of by a lighter complete Arrows system. A Dynojet Power Commander with an automatic switch is used to feed the motor, which now rotates 500 revs higher thanks to the unleashed electronics. And so that the Wellbrock-Honda CB 1000 R also brings its power to the ground, the chassis is adapted accordingly. At the back there is a completely adjustable Ohlins shock absorber including length adjustment, while the original fork is provided with revised innards at the front.
A look at the performance diagram is impressive, the power cure has paid off. Apart from a small hitch at 3000 rpm, where the tuning unit briefly accepts the gas somewhat surly, the performance development is exemplary and always at the level of the production engine. From 6000 tours, however, the engine of the Wellbrock Honda CB 1000 R steadily increases in power. While the series engine reached its maximum output of 123 hp at 9700 rpm, the Wellbrock continued to rotate up to 11,300 rpm and peaked at 155 hp.

Strong 32 HP more, something is possible?
Enough of the dry inventory, out on the street! The two Hondas leave the city in a parallel flight. While the Wellbrock Honda CB 1000 R is loudly trumpeting its Viagra consumption through the open Arrows silencer into the street canyons, the standard Honda whispers in Japanese reservedly and with a flush of shame on its cheeks. Open field, free travel. It goes through the corners at low revs, the torque kneads the tires warm on the cool autumn asphalt. And somehow the Wellbrock of the series CB is standing in the way at the corner exit. While the latter pushes down nicely in the last gear, you have the feeling of being one gear too high on the tuning bike. So rethink and pull the shower down one aisle.
Holla, how is she pushing now? From 6000 tours the Wellbrock-Honda CB 1000 R runs really warm, turns and pushes like a big one and burns away. The made four is reminiscent of a racing engine, pulls clean and powerful to the limiter. Thanks to the automatic gearshift, all it takes is a pull on the gear lever and the acceleration orgy continues!
Standard Honda CB 1000 R engine slightly better positioned
Bamm, this ear whistle was right! Even in tight spaces, where the standard Honda CB 1000 R is set up a little better in terms of the engine, it will now be tight for you. It lacks feedback and steering precision, and its handling is not as agile as that of the Wellbrock Honda CB 1000 R. The faster it gets down to business, the better the tuned CB gets. She would like to take us on the race and completely take us over for herself, but due to the lack of a route, it remains with the country road lap.
Back in the garage, both Honda CB 1000 Rs stand peacefully next to each other with ticking exhaust systems – and both are at peace with each other. The series CB knows that it is the better country road motorcycle as long as the driver sticks roughly to the StVZO. The Wellbrock CB, on the other hand, is certain that it was born for higher things. You can drive country roads, but also race tracks. And so must be before Aprilia & Co. no longer hide. And the wider and more fluid the ground, the harder it will strike.

Tuning against series – Goliath against David. The test bench curve of the Wellbrock engine is impressive. The four-cylinder hangs a bit on the ropes under 3000 tours, but then puts on nicely linear and powerful pressure. Its rideability is excellent, the extra kick over 8000 turns is awesome. However, it is a bit too sharp for pure country road use, and the increase in speed of 500 rpm can hardly be used sensibly. At the race, on the other hand, the Wellbrock Honda CB 1000 R should be mercilessly fun and make some competitors look big.

Tuning tips

The Bringer! The revision of the chassis extends the range of application of the Honda by worlds, the driving behavior is sportier.
Motor tuning: Anyone who only flies around with their Honda CB 1000 R in public areas and not permanently with Superbike-armed buddies through the area does not need to do extensive engine tuning to the machine. A shorter gear ratio (pinion for 17 euros), which tightens the sprint quality a little, or an automatic gearshift (including engine management optimization from e.g. Bazzaz or Dynojet between 700 and 1000 euros) is enough. However, if it is to be a decent increase in performance, there is no way around the experienced tuning specialist. Head processing, modified camshafts etc. cost at least 1500 euros. In order to support the mechanical tuning in a meaningful way, however, additional electronic components are required, so that in the end 3000 euros can be on the bill very quickly.
Suspension tuning: It makes more sense to revise the chassis, which is too soft for the hard brawl. Firmer fork springs are available from Wilbers, Ohlins and Co. from 90 euros. In addition, oil is required. However, it makes more sense to convert the chassis from a single source, for example at www.hh-racetech.de, Ohlins or Wilbers directly – or at any other competent dealer. The advantage: fork and shock absorber are matched to one another to match the rider’s weight. in the
In the case of the Wellbrock Honda CB 1000 R (fork conversion for 1100 euros and shock absorber with adjustable pressure level for 1160 euros), this has been achieved very well.
Exhaust: If you want to lend a hand visually, you can easily do this on the exhaust muffler. Slip-on systems like Hurric MP-1 are available with EG / BE for 199 euros. Complete systems from 1200 euros (arrows) are particularly useful in combination with a tuned engine or optimized injection electronics.
Ergonomics and chichi stuff: Completely milled footrest systems for the Honda CB 1000 R start with ABE at 329 euros. Flatter handlebars plus other clamps go together over the counter at LSL, for example, for 160 euros. There are a dozen suppliers of license plate holders, LED indicators, mirrors and handles on the accessory market, and there is something to suit every taste and budget.
Conclusion
Bilski
In the end, the tuned Honda came in first in the comparison test, clearly ahead of the standard Honda CB 1000 R..
1. Wellbrock Honda CB 1000 R
Mission accomplished. The potential of the Honda CB 1000 R has been increased many times over in terms of sport, but its suitability for everyday use has not been greatly impaired. It’s just a shame that we couldn’t take them to a racetrack…
2. Honda CB 1000 R
The standard Honda CB 1000 R is good in every way and therefore good for the driver in the best sense of the word. She accompanies you reliably and reliably and also provides you with adrenaline on demand. But more emotions would do her good.
